Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 64: a history of the number and who wore it best

USA Today16 hours ago
The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 64 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 64 and the players who wore it best.
Current Steelers No. 64 wearer: OG Max Scharping
Scharping was drafted by the Houston Texans with the 55th overall pick in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. In 2022, he was waived after playing in 48 games, 33 of which were starts. He was quickly claimed off waivers by the Bengals, where he played in 31 games for Cincinnati over the course of two seasons. Scharping signed with the Eagles as a free agent in 2024 but failed to make roster cuts. He would join the Commanders' practice squad, but the Steelers signed him off it in October of 2024. Scharping appeared in just two games last season but was re-signed by Pittsburgh last April on a one-year deal. The journeyman guard's experience is a great addition to the Steelers' offensive line and figures to be the top backup guard behind Isaac Seumalo and Mason McCormick.
Last five Steelers to wear No. 64:
Best No. 64 in Steelers history: C Jeff Hartings
While an honorable mention for No. 64 is DT Steve Furness, the best Steeler to ever wear the number is center Jeff Hartings. He signed with Pittsburgh as a free agent in 2001 and made the transition from guard to center — a move that proved crucial for the Steelers' offensive success in the early 2000s. From 2001 to 2006, Hartings was named First-Team All-Pro, Second-Team All-Pro, and earned two Pro Bowl selections. He was a key part of the Steelers' Super Bowl XL-winning team and anchored the offensive line during that championship run. Hartings retired in 2006 but left a legacy deserving as greatest Steeler to ever wear No. 64 in Pittsburgh.

Williamson has RBI double, Castillo strikes out 8 in 7 innings as Mariners beat Pirates 1-0

Ben Williamson had an RBI double in the sixth inning, Luis Castillo tossed seven innings, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 on Saturday night. Williamson, who came in with just one RBI since May 29, patiently waited on a cutter down in the zone from Pirates reliever Caleb Ferguson (0-3) and smacked it into the right-center gap to put the Mariners in front. It was the only run they would need with Castillo (5-5) easily going through the Pirates' lineup. The right-hander gave up two singles while striking out a season-high eight. He needed just 99 pitches to tie his season-high for innings. Matt Brash pitched the eighth, and Andres Munoz got the last three outs for his 20th save. Pirates starter Mike Burrows gave up three hits and walked four while striking out six in five innings. Key moment Just two hitters into the game, Pirates designated hitter Andrew McCutchen got a hold of a four-seam fastball from Castillo. Mariners center fielder Julio Rodriguez raced to and collided with the wall in left-center field to take extra bases away from McCutchen. Key stat Castillo went at least seven innings for the 20th time in 92 starts with the Mariners. Up next Mariners RHP George Kirby (2-4, 4.85 ERA) will start against Pirates RHP Paul Skenes (4-7, 2.03) on Sunday.

Insider provides update to ‘complicated' T.J. Watt, Steelers contract talks

T.J. Watt's contract situation with the Steelers continues to dominate the NFL world. On Saturday's SportsCenter, ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler provided some insight on potential holdups to Watt's contract negotiations, as well as an update from an unnamed Steelers source: Advertisement "Well, people I've talked to around the league believe it's guaranteed money, it's term length," Fowler said. "A lot of the details, they get sticky this time of year, especially as you're leading up to training camp. I talked to somebody with the team who said, 'Look, these are complicated deals to do, but we are working on it. We want T.J. Watt here.' There's not a lot of traction right now as far as a potential trade — although there would certainly be a lot of interest if the Steelers would tap into that. "This is a situation where [Watt] is probably going to be the highest-paid edge rusher in the league when this is all said and done. It just depends on when the Steelers can do it. Typically, they like to do their deals either around training camp or leading into Week 1. So, this is far from over." Insiders have agreed that Watt could reset the market, potentially even becoming the NFL's highest-paid non-QB — but Adam Schefter believes outside trade interest will only ramp up after the recent arrivals of Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith.
