In first meeting of MCD's Standing Committee, 25 proposals get nod
Poor sanitation, dog menace, monsoon preparedness, and status of desilting were among the few issues discussed on Friday at the first meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) Standing Committee, a body set up after a delay of two-and-a-half years.
The delay caused due to a tussle between AAP and BJP had ended with the appointment of BJP councillor Satya Sharma as chairperson on June 12. Every project worth over Rs 5 crore needs to be passed by this committee.
At the meeting on Friday, Sharma announced that the deadline for availing a 10% rebate on property tax has been extended till July 31.
Over 25 items on the agenda were passed at the meeting, including the purchase of Diflubenzuron 25% WP, used to kill mosquito larvae in its initial stage. This is in line with the initiative taken up by MCD's Public Health department to prevent and control of vector-borne diseases ahead of the monsoon.
Also passed were items related to the revision of the layout plan of DDU Marg, as well as Delhi University colleges, including Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and St Stephen's College.
The proposal for SRCC included the construction of a new academic block and the addition of two floors for a girls' hostel. The approval for this proposal had been pending since 2012. For St Stephen's College, the approved proposal included the addition of a new academic block, a hostel block, staff quarters, and an auditorium block. A proposal in this regard had been pending for the last 10 years.
The meeting also approved the extension of contract for private security services, sanitation workers, and housekeeping staff at MCD-run hospitals such as Kasturba Hospital, Rajan Babu Institute of Pulmonary Medicine and Tuberculosis and Maharishi Valmiki Infectious Diseases Hospital.
Leader of Opposition, AAP councillor Ankush Narang, meanwhile, raised the issue of poor sanitation in Central, West, and South zones, questioning the budget sanctioned to each councillor.
At the meeting, councillors sought status and data on drains desilted ahead of monsoon, open drains, JJ Colony clusters, encroachments, illegal parking, and vacant posts of sanitation workers, among others.
A civic body official said, 'Authorities have hastened the process of desilting. Till now, 1.56 lakh metric tonne of silt has been removed, while 37,000 small drains have been desilted against the 40,000 target.'

BJP working on restoring peace, installing popular govt in Manipur, says Biren Singh
Former Manipur CM N Biren Singh has said that the BJP is constantly working towards restoring peace and installing a popular government in the state at the earliest. 'We believe the Centre will do the needful very soon,' she said. Manipur was placed under President's Rule on February 13 days after Biren Singh resigned as the chief minister. While the state legislators had on several occasions met the Governor of Manipur to form a new government, there has been no significant breakthrough.

On Nitish turf, Chirag set to sharpen ‘new leadership' pitch, step up ‘Bahujan outreach'
Barely three weeks after Union minister Chirag Paswan stirred Bihar politics by announcing that he would contest in the upcoming state Assembly polls, the LJP (Ram Vilas) president is going to step up pressure on ally JD (U) by holding a rally in Rajgir – in Nalanda district, the home turf of Chief Minister and JD(U) supremo Nitish Kumar – on Sunday. The LJP (RV) has dubbed its Rajgir meeting 'Bahujan sankalp samagam', where Chirag would focus on 'Bahujan' and 'nav netritva' (new leadership) in a bid to expand his party's base beyond Paswans – the Scheduled Caste (SC) group to which he belongs – to other Bahujan communities. While both Nitish and Chirag are key allies of the BJP-led NDA, their relations have been strained, with the LJP(RV) chief now positioning himself for a larger role in Bihar politics. For the last couple of months, the LJP (RV) has engaged in posturings in what has been seen as its bid to get a sizeable number of seats to contest in the Assembly polls due in October-November this year. While senior partners, BJP and JD(U), are likely to contest from about 100 seats each in the elections to the 243-member House, the LJP (RV) and other junior NDA allies – including Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi's Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and former Union minister Upendra Kushwaha's Rashtriya Lok Morcha – have also been attempting to claim larger shares in seat-sharing. In the Lok Sabha polls, the LJP(RV) had won five seats out of five it was allotted by the NDA out of the state's 40 seats. For the Assembly polls, the NDA leadership has yet to kickstart the seat-sharing negotiations among its allies. Chirag, 42, now clearly seems to be looking to take centrestage in Bihar politics with his party calling for a 'new leadership' in the state. At the LJP(RV)'s June 8 rally in Arah, Chirag had announced that he would contest the 'Assembly polls from any seat people would want him to contest from'. At the Rajgir meeting, he is expected to push for 'Bihar's leadership for Bahujans', especially for the SCs which account for 19.65% of the state's population. Paswans make up about 5.33% of the state's population. The LJP (RV)'s Jamui MP Arun Bharti, who is also Chirag's brother-in-law, said, in a social media post, on the eve of the Rajgir event: 'Though Bahujan samaj has a huge population, it has been kept out from leadership role. The social group which is the biggest was shown/ treated as the smallest one. But, not any longer. From land of Rajgir, we are going to make an important announcement – Bahujan will no longer be a crowd but a voice. They will not just vote but lead. Bahujam Sankalp Samagam is not a cultural event but a political clarion call. We are gathering at Rajgir to fight on our terms, choose our leadership. Our leader will be Chirag Paswan.' Of late, Chirag has entrusted Bharti to play a major role in his party for working out its poll strategies. After the LJP(RV) chief's decision to take the plunge in the Assembly polls, RJD leader and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Tejashwi Yadav asked him to clear the air if he 'wanted to become Bihar CM'. 'Let him (Chirag) say it clearly, it will give clarity to NDA and INDIA bloc,' Tejashwi said. An LJP (RV) leader told The Indian Express: 'As of now, we are engaging in intense posturings to get a good number of seats for the upcoming polls. We also want winnable seats. With five MPs, we are the BJP's third most important NDA ally at the Centre. If a party like HAM (S) with one MP can ask for 40 seats, how many should we ask for with that calculation'. In the 2020 Assembly polls in which the then undivided LJP had contested alone, the party had got 5.66% votes while winning just one seat. ‘Some BJP MPs backing our Waqf stand': Top Muslim body chief on eve of Patna rally
After holding scores of protest meetings against the amended Waqf law across Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal, Imarat-e-Shariah, one of the country's leading Muslim organisations, is set to hold a mega rally in Patna's Gandhi Maidan on Sunday to keep the heat on the BJP-led Centre over the row. Imarat-e-Shariah, headquartered in Patna, has rejected the Waqf amendment legislation, calling for its withdrawal. The legislation was passed by Parliament in April. In May, after hearing multiple petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, the Supreme Court reserved its decision on the prayer for interim directions. Speaking to The Indian Express, Imarat-e-Shariah head Faisal Rahmani said: 'Though we have been protesting against the draconian Waqf Amendment Bill right from the start, we want to keep the pressure on the Centre. We have been creating awareness among public about how the Centre's Waqf amendments are against several provisions of the Constitution and Supreme Court rulings. It is nothing but a bid to take away our places of worship and heritage buildings. This law undermines the spirit of brotherhood in the country.' Rahmani said: 'We accept the 1995 Waqf law. Going by the amendments to it, how can one disallow Hindus to donate their land for a good cause? Our records show that there are thousands of educational, medical and social organisations and institutions being run on Waqf land, some of which even have more Hindu beneficiaries in comparison to Muslims. Take for example Maulana Mazharul Haque University in Patna, which has 88% Hindu students in courses.' He said, 'The Centre summarily rejected our more than 300 representations against the Waqf Bill – we are also rejecting their amended Waqf law.' Calling the Waqf law 'irrational', the Imarat-e-Shariah chief also said: 'What will happen when someone asks for proof of Ashokan pillars or a whole lot of our historical monuments cutting across religions? This law aims at creating enmity among citizens… Public is a great force. It had made the NDA-led central government withdraw three farm laws. Patna rally is just the beginning, we will keep the pressure on the Centre.' Asked about timing of the Imarat-e-Shariah's protests ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls, Rahmani said they have been seeking support from all parties. 'We are getting calls of solidarity from various political parties. In fact, some BJP MPs have also been supporting our Waqf stand,' he claimed.
