UNC stages seventh-inning comeback to down Boston College, advance in ACC Tournament
The UNC baseball team is unofficially locked into an NCAA Tournament spot, but winning this weekend's ACC Tournament will improve UNC's Regional seeding.
North Carolina had a chance to win the ACC Regular Season Title, but clinched third place after losing its finale at Florida State. The Diamond Heels earned a double-bye in the ACC Tournament as a result, facing Boston College Friday in their opener.
UNC trailed for most of Friday night's quarterfinal matchup, but something changed once the seventh inning rolled around. North Carolina overcame a 2-run deficit in the seventh, scoring five runs during the frame en route to a 7-2 victory.
With their win, the Diamond Heels advance to face FSU in a rematch, this time in Saturday's ACC Tournament Semifinal Round at 5 p.m.
UNC ace Jake Knapp tossed another gem Friday, throwing seven innings of 2-run ball, but lacked the run support needed to extend his undefeated streak. North Carolina finally broke through with another clutch hit from Jackson Van De Brake, as its captain doubled down the right-field line and tied the game at 2-all.
Van De Brake also supplied the Diamond Heels with their winning run, scoring on a wild pitch. Luke Stevenson and Lee Sowers singled during the seventh inning, extending UNC's lead to 5-2. North Carolina wasn't done pouring on runs in the later frames, with Stevenson mashing a 2-run home run in the eighth.
You thought Knapp was stellar on Friday? Diamond Heels closer Walker McDuffie hurled two perfect frames, striking out three batters across the eighth and ninth innings.
UNC won its regular season series in Tallahassee, taking the first two of three games from the Seminoles earlier in May. FSU eliminated North Carolina in the 2024 College World Series, so there's plenty on the line in Saturday's ACC Semifinal matchup.

Dale Jr. Makes Big Statement On Connor Zilisch's NASCAR Future
Dale Jr. Makes Big Statement On Connor Zilisch's NASCAR Future originally appeared on The Spun. Few drivers in the sport of racing can say they've been on the kind of heater that 19-year-old Connor Zilisch has been enjoying over the past nine races in Xfinity. With four wins, three runner-ups and a pair of top-five finishes, Zilisch has been everything he was advertised to be when he first made his NASCAR debut; and Dale Earnhardt Jr. believes this is just the beginning for the Charlotte, NC native. "He has the potential to do incredible, incredible Hall of Fame worthy things," Dale Jr. said after Saturday's checkered flag. "Oh man. He's a hell of a driver." "You know, he just went up there and got it back," Earnhardt added. "We've got great race cars, a good race car underneath him to do what he needed to do. So, it takes a lot of us ... that's what wins races in places like this and at Dover. So, thank y'all for all the hard work ... it's important to our performance." With only a handful of races left on the racing calendar, Zilisch is just 21 points behind fellow JRM teammate Justin Allgaier for this season's points lead. Zilisch himself was fired up after the win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Telling reporters: "I see some bricks that look kissable, and I'm going to kiss them. This is awesome. One hundred wins for JRM. Congrats to Dale, Kelley, L.W. [Miller], everybody who's raced for JRM, everybody who works at JRM." With how Connor has performed in the Xfinity Series it may not be long before he makes the jump to the Cup where he'll race against the big dawgs. Next up is the HyVee Perks 250 in Iowa where he'll look to add another Jr. Makes Big Statement On Connor Zilisch's NASCAR Future first appeared on The Spun on Jul 27, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 27, 2025, where it first appeared.

ESPN names Ohio State as a college basketball team that could 'make a jump' this season
We are all getting ready for the start of the college football season now just a little over a month away, but the college basketball season won't be too far behind. In fact, we're now within 100 days of the Ohio State basketball season, and ESPN took a big look at previewing hoops for 2025-2026 by looking at many different angles and storylines. One of the things Myron Metcalf and Jeff Borzello touched on was ten teams that "could make a jump" this coming season. And, if you are an Ohio State fan, then you have to like what the ESPN duo things of the Buckeyes this season because they were named as one of those ten teams. OSU was able to retain some key pieces of its core group, but outside of that, there's been a major overhaul of the guys suiting up in the scarlet and gray this season. The mix of old and new will have to come together for the Buckeyes to get back to the NCAA Tournament, but there's good reason to believe that it could happen. Here's what Borzello says about Ohio State this winter: "The Buckeyes showed flashes of their potential last season but couldn't quite string together a consistent run of form. With a terrific trio back in Bruce Thornton, Devin Royal and John Mobley Jr. -- plus the additions of Christoph Tilly and Brandon Noel up front -- Jake Diebler's team should find itself in the NCAA tournament." It sure seems like Ohio State hasn't had a shortage of talent over the last few years, but getting the team to come together and play as a team has been an issue that seems to be a problem in today's day and age of the transfer portal and name, image and likeness. Here's to hoping ESPN is right and that the Buckeyes make it back to meaningful games late and on into the postseason this basketball season. Nets' Drake Powell honored for being taken in 2025 NBA Draft
The Brooklyn Nets made one of the more surprising decisions amongst teams in the 2025 NBA Draft as they took a record-breaking five players in the event. Brooklyn made sure to address the lack of ball-handlers on the team, but one of the players they took, forward Drake Powell, not only has a different skillset, but he's also being honored from the place he grew up in. "The Chatham County Board of Commissioners adopted a special resolution Monday evening honoring Pittsboro native Drake Powell on his first-round selection in the 2025 NBA Draft," Michael Koh of wrote regarding Powell. After being inquired from the Atlanta Hawks by the Nets, Brooklyn used the 22nd overall pick on bring in Powell, a player who could be the Nets' latest attempt at finding a wing who can contribute on both ends. "Drake's journey… has been marked by excellence, discipline and an unwavering commitment to growth," Chatham County's resolution read in part, per Koch. Powell, 19, was born in Durham, North Carolina, but he spent most of his time growing up in Pittsboro, North Carolina, a town about 30 miles away from Durham. Powell played for Northwood high school in Pittsboro, where he showed his potential to be a great basketball player. "He's just stayed humble and very much committed to not just being a good player but being a good young man,' Chatham County commissioner Karen Howard told 97.9 The Hill, per Koch.. 'It was quite an honor to be able to recognize him and wish him well in his future endeavors… this is what Chatham County and Chatham County Schools is capable of doing." Powell comes to the Nets after spending his freshman season at the University of North Carolina, where he averaged 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 48.3% from the field and 37.9% from three-point land. Powell wasn't able to play for the Nets during the team's trip to Las Vegas to play in the summer league due to left knee tendinopathy, but he still means something to where his basketball journey began.
