Revanth Reddy bats for Bandaru Dattatreya, a Telugu OBC, for vice president post
Meanwhile, he termed as 'unfortunate' the resignation of former vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar. 'The next Vice President should be from Telangana. Telangana deserves its due. You cannot do so much injustice to the people of Telangana. Telugu is the second most spoken language in India after Hindi, and then comes Bengali. Injustice has been done to our people.
'I have demanded that the NDA government appoint Bandaru Dattatreya as the next Vice President of India. If Dattatreya is made the vice president, then some of your sins will be forgiven,' the Congress leader told reporters.
Dattatreya was the Haryana governor during 2019-2021. He was made the governor of Himachal Pradesh in July 2021 and vacated that post on July 21 this year.
Reddy said he proposed Dattatreya's name because there is so much talk about OBCs these days, and Dattatreya, an OBC, was removed from the post of governor. He said Bandi Sanjay was also axed as the BJP president of Telangana, as he termed both these leaders the main face of Telugu OBCs.
'They sent a person of Telugu-speaking person back home from Delhi (referring to former VP M Venkaiah Naidu). Then they removed Bandaru Dattatreya as governor and then removed Bandi Sanjay as Telangana BJP president,' said Reddy, attacking the BJP-led Centre.
Asked if the Congress would support Dattatreya's candidature, he said, 'I will try and help Bandaru Dattatreya and I will also request my leadership to support him too, but the Congress leadership will take a call on it.' Reddy also alleged that the country is in danger till the NDA government is in power, and it has to be removed.

Rahul pushes for OBC quota in English medium schools
Hyderabad: Leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Friday said the caste survey conducted by the Telangana govt—and the subsequent analysis by an independent expert group—made it clear that education, especially in English medium, is the most critical driver of socio-economic mobility for OBCs. Building on these findings, he announced that the Indian National Congress will push for reservations for OBCs and other marginalised groups in English medium private educational institutions—marking what he called the party's third major step towards OBC empowerment. Speaking at the Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi, Rahul said: "The Telangana caste survey revealed that those with an English medium education advanced further than even uneducated landlords and wealthy individuals. This does not mean Hindi or regional languages like Bengali, Tamil, or Kannada aren't important—they are—but English is crucial for progress." Rahul Gandhi outlined the Congress party's three-pronged agenda for OBC upliftment: Conducting caste surveys in all states where the party is in power, breaking the 50% cap on total reservations, and holding a national caste census if voted to power at Centre. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Start planning your next adventure today Hotel Deals | Search Ads Browse Now Undo He pointed out that OBCs, despite making up nearly 50% of India's population, own no major corporate or media houses and have little to no representation in the judiciary and top institutions. Admitting past shortcomings, he said: "I did not fully understand the extent of injustice faced by OBCs earlier. And the OBCs themselves were not aware of their strength. This is because the RSS and BJP have systematically erased OBC history from textbooks. Unlike SC and ST history, OBC struggles are invisible in the school curriculum. That is deliberate." Calling the RSS the 'biggest enemy' of OBCs, Rahul blamed 'Manuvaadi ideology' for institutional discrimination and vowed to correct past neglect. He praised chief minister Revanth Reddy, saying the state's caste survey was a bold step. "Revanth Reddy told me he had no choice. He saw firsthand the injustice being done to OBCs and felt compelled to act," Rahul Gandhi said.

Congress cadre wait prolongs for political appointments to Karnataka's boards
Bengaluru: Even as the Congress high command finalised names to head 29 smaller boards and corporations, hundreds of political posts of directors and members remain in limbo, leading to fresh disappointment among the party cadre in Karnataka. Chief minister Siddaramaiah and DCM DK Shivakumar, who also heads KPCC, met AICC general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala in Delhi Thursday to finalise the limited list. Party insiders say Shivakumar is likely to release the names of chairpersons once he returns to Bengaluru this weekend. Siddaramaiah told the media that Shivakumar, Surjewala and he had finalised chairpersons for boards and corporations, making a few changes. However, the final decision is up to the party high command," said Siddaramaiah. However, the much-awaited appointments to the remaining 950 posts continue to be delayed. Of the 1,118 sanctioned political posts across boards and corporations, only 118 have been filled so far. According to officials in the chief minister's office (CMO), the party has now decided to collect three nominations per assembly constituency from the party's sitting MLAs and defeated candidates of the 2023 elections to identify suitable candidates for the posts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Libas Purple Days Sale Libas Undo "Names for 650 posts have been completed with the new exercise being considered for 300 pending posts," said a CMO official. Despite repeated assurances from the top leadership about "rewarding" party workers for their efforts in bringing Congress to power in 2023, the delay continues nearly two years into the govt's term. To speed up the process, Siddaramaiah had set up a panel in June 2024 under home minister G Parameshwara to identify eligible functionaries. The panel submitted over 500 names to the high command, but none has been cleared so far. Siddaramaiah had earlier promised that the appointments would be finalised by July 16 — a deadline that has come and gone. Party insiders attribute the delay to factionalism. "One group approves a list, but another opposes it. A third group of functionaries under a senior leader seeks its own validation for the posts. Overall, internal politics has delayed the appointments for a while now," said a cabinet minister, suggesting that it may still take another week to 10 days for the list to be cleared. Shivajinagar MLA Rizwan Arshad, who is also on the Parameshwara-led panel, expressed optimism that the impasse would end shortly. – Quote The list of chairpersons for boards and corporations, along with the list of names for members and directors, will be concluded soon. There shall be no more delay -Rizwan Arshad, Shivajinagar MLA

A week on, all in Gurgaon detention centres freed, except 10 ‘illegals'
Gurgaon: A week after a drive to identify Bangladeshis and Rohingya living illegally in the city began, leading to around 250 people being rounded up at four holding centres, everyone – barring 10 foreigners who will be deported – has been freed. After the verification exercise was complete, the last batches of detainees were sent home on Friday, though the four community centres remain notified as holding centres. The drive generated panic among migrant families from West Bengal and Assam, many of whom have left the city, scared of detentions and questions. The police verification drive had initially rounded up around 500 people. Around 50% of them were sent to the holding centres for checks that involved background verification from police in home districts. TOI had reported in its July 25 edition that during these checks, 10 of those detained had been found to be Bangladeshi citizens who had made Indian IDs like Aadhaar and voter cards made. You Can Also Check: Gurgaon AQI | Weather in Gurgaon | Bank Holidays in Gurgaon | Public Holidays in Gurgaon At the Sector 40 community centre, one of the four detention facilities, only one remained on Friday – one of the 10 men identified as a Bangladeshi national. "He was detained from Sector 53 after arriving from Delhi. He couldn't provide proof of Indian citizenship. So, we have initiated his deportation process," said a police officer familiar with the case. At the community centre in Badshapur, which previously held over 100 people, all detainees were freed after they provided proof of their Indian citizenship and the documents were vetted. Some Bangladeshi nationals are still housed here. Sandeep Kumar, spokesperson for the police, said, "There is zero detention at all four centres now. All migrants were released after verification of their documents." But even as the drive has managed to identify illegals, it has left a considerable section of the Bengali-speaking migrant population shaken. Many of those released described their time in detention as "the most traumatic days" of their lives. They also expressed disappointment over the lack of support from political parties in their home states — particularly Trinamool Congress — despite public statements of outrage from the party and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. They said no political leader or any organisation from their home states had visited them despite the show of support on social media. At an event in Kolkata on Thursday, Mamata accused the BJP-led Centre of targeting the Bengali language and its people. "A kind of linguistic terrorism has been declared against the Bengali language, the fifth most spoken in the world. Around 30 crore people speak Bengali, but Bengali speakers are being sent to jail. I cannot accept this, and I believe you cannot either. There should be zero tolerance for people being detained just for speaking Bengali. We must protect this land," she said. Those from Assam, too, rued the lack of home support. Tara Miya, a labour contractor from Assam staying in Baliawas, said most of his workforce had gone back home. "Sixteen of my men were detained for about six days, first in a police station and then at the detention centre in Sector 40. No politician from Assam offered any help. The cops released all my men after verification. Of the 400 migrants who stay in Baliawas, only about 100 are here. The rest have left for home," he added. Local labour organisations, however, rallied behind the detainees, condemning what they described as harassment. The state secretary of the Democratic Women's Committee, Usha Saroha, along with other labour union functionaries, pointed out that many affected workers have been long-term residents of the city, working in industries, at construction sites, and as domestic staff. CITU general secretary Jaibhagwan said, "Bengali-speaking minorities are being specifically targeted. Many citizens are being mistreated under the pretext of verification." A senior police officer said the deportation process for the 10 Bangladeshi nationals is under way and the identification drive is not over. "The drive against illegals will continue in the coming days and these four designated holding centres will also operate for now. In case we find any suspect, they will be housed here," the officer added.
