The UAE Supreme Court on June 26 issued a ruling in the high-profile 'Justice and Dignity Terrorist Organisation' case, partially overturning a previous verdict by the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeals. The court found 24 individuals guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The defendants were convicted of collaborating with the terrorist group "Justice and Dignity" and of financing the outlawed "Al Islah (Reform) Group," which Emirati authorities associate with the Muslim Brotherhood. Both organisations are banned in the UAE for attempting to destabilise the state. In addition to the prison sentences, the court ordered the seizure of all funds, assets, and materials connected to the two offences. Authorities said these actions are part of ongoing efforts to dismantle terror funding networks within the country. This latest decision follows a previous July 10, 2023, ruling in which the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeals' State Security Division convicted six companies and 53 individuals tied to the same case. That verdict included punishments ranging from fines of up to Dh20 million to life imprisonment. The 'Justice and Dignity' group is considered a terrorist organisation by the Emirati authorities. It has been linked to the 2013 mass trial of 94 Emiratis accused of forming a secret organisation aimed at undermining state security. In 2023, the group reappeared in legal proceedings as part of a broader case targeting individuals allegedly involved in subversive activities. According to the UAE government, this group sought to revive networks tied to political Islam and promote agendas aligned with extremist ideologies.Human rights organisations, however, have criticised the trials involving this group for lacking due process and transparency. The 'Al Islah (Reform) Group' is the Emirati branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, a transnational Islamist organisation banned in the UAE and several other Arab countries.Established in the 1970s, Al Islah initially operated openly, focusing on education and religious outreach. However, by the 1990s, UAE authorities dissolved the group's formal presence, and in 2014, it was officially designated a terrorist organisation. The government has accused Al Islah of attempting to seize power, promote extremist ideas, and maintain ties with foreign Brotherhood factions.Several of its members have faced long prison terms for allegedly plotting against the state and accepting foreign funding to support their activities.

EOW issues fresh summons to Salar Jung kin, Sena MP's driver in Rs150 crore land gift case
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The economic offences wing of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city police on Friday issued fresh summons to the descendants of the Salar Jung family from Hyderabad and Jawed Rasul Shaikh, driver of Shiv Sena MP Sandipan Bhumre and his MLA son Vilas. Police are probing the legality of a gift deed or hibanama under which the Jung family transferred a three-acre plot valued at more than Rs150 crore in the driver's name. Mir Mehmud Ali Khan, one of the descendants of Salar Jung, and his kin, along with Shaikh, failed to respond to the earlier summons. "After they did not turn up to record their statements the first time, fresh notices have been issued asking them to remain present before EOW," EOW inspector Sambhaji Pawar said. On Thursday, Vilas Bhumre, MLA from Paithan, distanced himself and his father from the transaction. "Though Jawed is our driver, we are in no way connected to the land deal," he said, adding that he was also questioned by EOW in this case. The land in question, located in Dawoodpura on Jalna Road, is part of a 12-acre parcel claimed by the Salar Jung family. According to the gift deed, 12,438.2 square metres (around three acres) were transferred to Jawed after a 2023 revenue department ruling upheld the family's claim to the land following a prolonged legal battle. The inquiry was initiated after a police complaint by Parbhani-based lawyer Mujahid Khan, who raised questions about the propriety of such a high-value land gift to a driver, unrelated by blood and belonging to a different sect of Islam. As per Islamic law, hibanamas or gift deeds are generally considered valid among blood relatives. Jawed, who has been working with the Bhumre family for more than a decade, earlier told TOI that he shared good relations with the Salar Jung family and received the land as a gift. EOW continues to scrutinise the documents submitted by the complainant and is awaiting the appearance of all parties concerned for ascertaining facts.

CPI(M) rejects the inference that Nilambur's win widened UDF's path to victory in 2026 Assembly polls
Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State Secretariat emphatically rejected the reading that the Nilambur Assembly by-election win had significantly widened the Opposition United Democratic Front's (UDF) path to victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan told a press conference that, on the contrary, the party had shored up its base in Nilambur despite the UDF harnessing radical Islamist and Hindu majoritarian forces to its electoral bandwagon. Mr. Govindan said the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) vote share had increased substantially in the Nilambur Assembly segment, from an estimated 40,000 in the 2024 Lok Sabha by-election to 66,060 in the recently concluded Assembly bypoll. The results put paid to the UDF's claim that the bypoll was a verdict against the LDF government. 'The CPI(M) has an assured 40,000 votes in Nilambur. The party has added 22,000 additional votes to its latest tally. The trend, if it holds, will decimate the UDF in the local body polls in 2025 and the 2026 Assembly elections. The UDF has missed the larger picture,' he said. Mr. Govindan said the CPI(M) faced strong headwinds in Nilambur. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) conducted a communally divisive campaign using the UDF's alliance with the 'radical Islamist' Jama'at-e-Islami as a front. He said the SDPI, despite fielding its candidate, cross-voted for the UDF. Its vote share in the Assembly segment dwindled from 4.751 in the 2024 LS by-poll to 2,275 in the Assembly by-poll. Mr. Govindan said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate stated publicly that his supporters had resorted to last-minute tactical voting to aid the UDF. Mr. Govindan said the Nilambur bypoll was ominous for Kerala's secular polity. The UDF opened the door for Islamist and Hindu majoritarian outfits to leverage votes through schismatic communal messaging. The IUML and Congress have abandoned broad-based party politics. Instead, they have stoked profoundly divisive identity politics for electoral gain. Mr. Govindan said P.V. Anvar piggybacked on the LDF's development initiatives in Nilambur for electoral advantage. The party machinery foundered in countering the gambit.
