'Let it go extinct' cry critics as Jurassic World Rebirth makes rotten debut
With critical responses totted up on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes it's currently sitting at a rotten rating of 54% from 98 professional reactions.
But while this is far from ideal for filmmaker Gareth Edwards' seventh feature-length entry in the franchise, it is not a series low point.
Starring Scarlett Johansson as former military operative Zora Bennett, Jonathan Bailey as bespectacled palaeontologist Dr Henry Loomis, Rupert Friend as pharmaceutical rep Martin Krebs and Mahershala Ali as team leader Duncan Kincaid, Jurassic World Rebirth starts afresh, 32 years after dinosaurs were brought back when public interest is waning.
This rag-tag group braves the forbidden isolated equatorial regions where dinosaurs still roam freely on a secret mission to extract DNA from three massive prehistoric creatures in the hopes of a major medical breakthrough.
But in the wreckage of the park and previous human experiments, life has also continued to find a way in unexpected forms too.

'How can a movie about mutant dinosaurs be this forgettable to look at? It's a shame,' wrote critic Danny Leigh for the Financial Times, also describing the movie as 'a lumbering beast'.
'The Jurassic sequels were bad enough when they made an effort to evolve – they're even less worth seeing now that they already come pre-fossilised,' added Indie Wire's David Ehrlich, while The Cinematic Reel's review suggested: 'If this is the franchise's big reset, maybe it's time Universal finally let the dinosaurs and the Jurassic Park franchise go extinct.
Caryn James for the BBC observed in her two-star review: 'Jurassic World Rebirth has major stars in Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey, and better-designed creatures than ever, but so few thrills that it may be the weakest of the Jurassic franchise.'
However, other critics were much more effusive in their praise.
For The Independent, Clarisse Loughery insisted that Rebirth 'is making the dinosaur cool again', while Peter Bradshaw for The Guardian wrote in his four-star review: 'Now, against all odds, these dinosaurs have had a brand refresh: a brighter, breezier, funnier, incomparably better acted and better written film.'
The Telegraph's Tim Robey went even further, awarding a full five stars and adding: 'It's easily the best-looking, best-sounding film since the first. But it takes a deep, personal love of the medium for a director to deliver such crunchy impact, thrills, spills and euphoric highs.
These more positive reactions have saved Jurassic World Rebirth from ranking as poorly as some of its predecessors.
Kicking off with the original Jurassic Park back in 1993 – which revolutionised how dinosaurs are viewed in popular culture as well as being a roaring good time – it was legendary Steven Spielberg who was initially at the helm as the director, returning for sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park in 1997.

Unsurprisingly this first outing boasts an impressive 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, although the sequel plunges down to 56%. More Trending
This initial trilogy was capped off with Jurassic Park III in 2001 before a second trilogy began with a fresh cast in 2015 with Jurassic World.
While this reboot earned 72%, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World Dominion followed in 2018 and 2022, respectively, and received the lowest ratings of all at just 47% and then 29%.
Jurassic World Rebirth is out in cinemas on July 2.

The 10-episode series follows a New York creative and British romance movie lover, Jessica (Hacks star Megan Stalter), who moves to London after a bad break-up and quickly strikes up a relationship with chaotic musician Felix (The White Lotus' Will Sharpe). The show leans right into the messiness of life with two imperfect protagonists trying to process their own life traumas while building a new future together. This relatable, vulnerable quality that Dunham, 39, imbues into her shows has long been a topic of discourse ever since her seminal 2012 HBO show Girls hit screens, featuring the iconic line delivered in the pilot episode. I feel like if I can bring light to a specific kind of experience that I'm connected to, that's wonderful. But what I'm most excited about is seeing all kinds of shows that tell all kinds of stories. 'I think British TV is a great place for that. I've just been watching What It Feels Like For A Girl, and it's so beautiful. I just feel so excited when I see a new voice that is telling such a specific and personal story. 'I didn't know what it was like to grow up queer in the early 2000s in Nottingham, but now I do… so that's always what I'm trying to do,' she said. In an interview with The New Yorker this month, she revealed that she had firmly decided against starring in her new show, with no plans to repeat the same scrutiny that came with starring in Girls. As for whether she had offered the 34-year-old any advice on how to handle being a Lena Dunham leading lady, she said:'Meg is her own incredible person, and she is so self-possessed. 'I learned so much from her, and I wish I'd had her in my ear when I was on a show. She [is] just is so elegant and wise and funny, so she's got it all covered.' While Too Much fostered fresh friendships for Dunham, there were also reunions including with ex-Girls star Michael Zegen who plays Jessica's ex-boyfriend. 'When I was first approached to do this, I know Lena because I had done Girls years ago, she texted me and was like, 'I want you for this this role' and obviously you say yes if Lena texts you and asks you to do her show,' he explained about how he ended up in Too Much. After playing another unfavourable ex, Joel, in Marvelous Mrs Maisel l, however, there was some wariness. 'I read it and I was like, 'oh man, like he's another unlikable guy who, the more you get to know him, the more you're like, oh, maybe, yeah, right.' More Trending There was no hesitation. I was still gonna do it, obviously, but yeah, there, there are some parallels between him and Joel.' Another major Hollyoaks exit as TV legend set to leave after one year
TV legend Sherrie Hewson is set to leave Hollyoaks after one year as Martha Blake. The actress, known for her roles in Coronation Street and Benidorm, joined the cast of the Channel 4 soap last year as part of a story that expanded the Blake clan. Martha was introduced as the long-lost grandmother of show titan Sienna Blake (Anna Passey) and she brought with her a plethora of secrets – namely that son Jez was a twin of former villain Patrick. Patrick star Jeremy Sheffield returned to the serial to portray Jez, who turned out to be every bit as villainous as his twin brother if not more so, with a subsequent twist confirming him to be a serial killer. Martha, who has dementia, knows all about Jez's penchant for murder and has covered up for him for decades, making the relationship between the two rather tense. Jez has thus far claimed the lives of Dilly Harcourt (Emma Johnsey-Smith), Abe Fielding (Tyler Conti) and social worker Ian. It was also confirmed that he was also to blame for the demise of Dennis Savage (Joe Tracini). Earlier this year, she spiked Sienna – twice – in a bid to keep her and Cleo McQueen (Nadine Mulkerrin) apart. The matriarch has also seemingly disowned Jez, wanting nothing more to do with his murderous ways and next week will see her confusion get worse. How exactly she leaves the show remains to be seen but a source told The Sun that there will be 'lots of twists and turns' to come. 'Sherrie's loved her time at Hollyoaks as Martha but she was only ever going to be in the show for a limited time,' a source told the publication. New ‘thrill ride' action movie dominates Amazon Prime Video charts
Film fans have hailed a new 'thrill ride' action movie, which has soared to the top of the Amazon Prime Video charts Heads of State was released on July 2, and followed Idris Elba as the UK Prime Minister, whose 'special relationship' with the US President – aka John Cena – crumbles when they find themselves targeted by a ruthless terrorist organization, and betrayed by someone in their teams. They end up stranded in Belarus and, unsure of who else to trust, are forced to put their bickering to one side so they can both make it out alive. Priyanka Chopra, Paddy Considine, Stephen Root and Jack Quaid are also among the star-studded cast, with Ilya Naishuller serving as director. Despite only premiering on streaming a few days ago, the flick has dominated charts on the streaming platform so far, and is currently in the number one spot in both the UK and US. Fans and critics have clearly been enjoying the action, as Heads of State claims a 67% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to a 76% ranking from the audience. Heaping praise, Robert M penned: 'Heads of State offers up that rare buddy movie with lots of action without taking itself too seriously. 'It develops its characters with adept writing and direction whilst it's lead actors bring in strong performances resulting in a thoroughly entertaining movie perfect for its 4th of July debut. I enjoyed this thoroughly [sic].' Shelly S agreed: 'I enjoyed this. It was a solid action flick with some funny stuff and Cena is really becoming a decent actor. He knows his strengths and he continues to choose films that play to those. 'It's fun seeing Idris is a role a little less serious. There are some fun cameos and lots of crazy action.' Josh H said: 'Fun and entertaining. A thrill ride we have all seen before, but I am here for it. Cena and Elba have great chemistry. A good watch!' 'Super fun buddy action comedy that reminds you of a well done 90's film,' Marcus A posted. 'Action was really cool and better than most action films now days but had a fun, timeless comedy back and forth, feels like Lethal Weapon but with US and British humor dynamic. 'The bad guys were forgettable, probably only fault with the film but worth watching.' 'We need more movies like this, pure, old, mindless action fun,' Red I added. 'Cena did a great job, all actor pulled their weight, the action was top notch. Great action flick, overall.' The huge success of the film has many fans desperate for a sequel, and director Ilya already has plans in mind for where Heads of State could go next. More Trending In fact, he is keen to reunite with Jack Quaid, who stole the show as CIA station chief Marty Comer in a brief action scene. Unpacking the future of the films, the filmmaker told Screenrant: 'If [people] watch the movie and enjoy it, and Amazon feels like it makes sense to do a second one, absolutely. I'd love to get more of Jack in there [and] more of Marty.' 'If it's not Heads of State 2, I will be bugging Jack to work together again,' he added. 'Because he comes in, he knows what he's doing, he's an incredible energy in terms of his positivity and the desire to not just be here and do a great job, but to go above and beyond.'
