Language violence peaks in Maharashtra as MNS workers assault shopkeeper
In this episode of 5ive Live, the focus is on the linguistic violence in Maharashtra, where MNS workers were caught on camera assaulting a shopkeeper for not speaking Marathi, sparking political chaos. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has condemned the violence, stating that hooliganism in the name of language will not be tolerated. The incident has led to diverse reactions from political parties, with some ministers defending the need to respect Marathi, while the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction has remained ambiguous in their response. This comes ahead of a rally where estranged cousins Uddhav and Raj Thackeray are set to share a stage, highlighting the dangerous rise of linguistic chauvinism and its political implications in Maharashtra. Additionally, India Today has accessed Air India's compensation forms sent to the families of victims of the AI-171 plane crash. The forms ask for details about the victim's employment status and financial dependency of family members, triggering controversy. A UK-based law firm representing over 40 families alleges that Air India is coercing families into submitting financial disclosures, which the airline denies, calling the charges unsubstantiated and inaccurate. Air India states it has already paid interim relief to 47 families and has support staff assisting families. The controversy raises questions about the fairness of this practice and its impact on grieving families, with lawsuits seeking enhanced compensation from Air India and possibly Boeing expected to be filed in the coming days.

Amid criticism of lapses in discom's functioning, Maha minister promises meeting to discuss issues
Mumbai: Shiv Sena legislator Nilesh Rane on Friday strongly criticised the functioning of the state distribution company, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MahaVitaran) and its apathy towards consumers, especially from the Konkan region. During discussion on a calling attention motion, Rane said: "Ninety per cent of the employees in MahaVitaran are contractual. They are not even given proper training. As of today, 11 contractual workers have died. There has been total neglect as the consumers have to stay without electricity for many hours.' He took a dig at the minister of state for energy, Meghana Sakore Bordikar that the people from Sindhudurg district and Konkan region in general have become used to lack of power due to MahaVitaran's inaction. Thereafter, the minister announced that a meeting of representatives from the Konkan region will be convened soon to address various issues with regard to MahaVitaran and thereby ensure continuity in the supply of electricity. Rane was later joined by other legislators who also complained about faulty functioning of the MahaVitaran demanding an immediate action. Rane conducted a panchnama on the work of the electricity distribution company in Konkan, especially in Sindhudurg district. 'For the past many years, DPs have been in poor condition. Electricity poles have fallen. In the last 15 years, roads have been dug to lay underground wires, but the work is incomplete,' he claimed. He strongly attacked the delay and lapses in the management of MahaVitaran. He also demanded that Konkan should get adequate funds for strengthening the power supply infrastructure. Responding to the questions raised by Nilesh Rane, Minister Meghna Bordikar said the work of laying underground cables is underway through the National Cyclone Hazard Mitigation Project. Out of 635 km, laying of cables for 225 kilometers have been completed. She further said that various works are underway under the revised distribution area plan. However, Rane was not satisfied with her answer. 'I am also aware of the printed reply. Go beyond that and answer my questions," Rane said, demanding a meeting on this issue. On this, Minister Bordikar announced to hold a meeting. During the discussion, Rane received support from Bhaskar Jadhav (Shiv Sena-UBT) and Rohit Pawar (NCP-SP) who also exposed the shortcomings of Mahavitaran.

Opposition slams Eknath Shinde for 'Jai Gujarat' remark; calls it surrender of Maharashtra pride
MUMBAI: Amid the ongoing controversy over Marathi versus Hindi, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday fuelled another row by ending his speech with 'Jai Gujarat' in the presence of Union Minister Amit Shah in Pune. Before concluding with 'Jai Gujarat', Shinde did say 'Jai Maharashtra'. Lauding the efforts of Union Minister Amit Shah, Shinde ended his speech with the sequence: 'Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra, Jai Gujarat.' The Opposition slammed Shinde for allegedly surrendering Marathi and Maharashtra pride before the Gujarati BJP leadership and accused him of showing a slave mentality. They alleged that Shinde is working as a slave of the BJP and that his 'Jai Gujarat' slogan reflects this mindset. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended Shinde saying, the slogan was not against Maharashtra. He added that Uddhav Thackeray himself had said 'Jai Gujarat' during an event in Gujarat, and pointed out, "Gujarat is not in Pakistan. There should not be hatred against any community or state." However, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut lashed out saying, "Amit Shah's duplicate Shiv Sena has revealed its real face with Eknath Shinde's 'Jai Gujarat' slogan." Raut said Shinde's Shiv Sena is now "Shah's Sena". "How can this person (Shinde) remain in Maharashtra's cabinet? He should be sacked immediately for insulting the sentiments of Marathi people and Maharashtra," Raut demanded. Shiv Sena leader Ramdas Kadam also criticised Shinde, saying that as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, he should not have said 'Jai Gujarat'. Maharashtra Congress President Harshavardhan Sapkal said Maharashtra is the land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's self-respect. He reminded that Shivaji Maharaj had once invaded Surat for Swarajya, but today, in his state, people like Eknath Shinde have mortgaged Maharashtra's pride to Gujarat.
