CBS Sports tabs Michigan football WR Donaven McCulley as most important incoming transfer
Michigan football brought in several impactful transfers this offseason. From quarterback Mikey Keene to defensive tackles Damon Payne and Tré Williams to linebacker Troy Bowles to running back Justice Haynes, there are several likely key contributors to the 2025 team ready and raring to go.
But if Michigan is to have a successful season, it likely means one stood out above the pack.
The Wolverines are counting on the defense continuing to dominate but retooled the offense in hopes that the passing game will be revamped. At the top, Sherrone Moore fired offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell and replaced him with Chip Lindsey — who had successful stints at Auburn, UCF, and North Carolina — while also making a splash landing five-star QB Bryce Underwood. But even if the offensive scheme and quarterback are better, the maize and blue passing attack will only be as good as their pass catchers.
Thus, when CBS Sports put together a list of the most impactful transfers that College Football Playoff contenders brought in, it wasn't Haynes — the former Alabama tailback — who earned top marks for the Wolverines, it was former Indiana wide receiver Donaven McCulley.
16. Michigan
Donaven McCulley, WR, Indiana
No Michigan wide receiver hit the 250-yard barrier last season. Only one (Tyler Morris) even had 150 yards receiving. The Wolverines must get better at receiver, especially when you consider tight end Colston Loveland (56 catches, 582 yards, 5 TDs) is off to the NFL. That's what makes McCulley so important. McCulley was one of the best pass catchers in the Big Ten two years ago, reeling in 48 passes for 644 yards and six touchdowns. But he only played two games for Indiana last year before opting to sit out and transfer. There's a big question mark around whether McCulley can recapture his 2023 form. If he can, the 6-5, 203-pounder is exactly the type of go-to target Michigan lacked in 2024. If not ... Michigan will have to hope anyone can step up for an unproven quarterback room.
McCulley will pair with fellow incoming transfer Anthony Simpson from UMass, as well as returning wideouts Semaj Morgan, Fredrick Moore, Kendrick Bell, Channing Goodwin, Peyton O'Leary, I'Marion Stewart, and a trio of freshmen in Jamar Browder, Andrew Marsh, and Jacob Washington.
McCulley has earned rave reviews all offseason, having arrived in winter and participated in spring ball. If he can be even in the ballpark of the expectations heaped upon him, mig has a chance to right the ship after an 8-5 season a year ago.

Dolphins UDFA profile: WR A.J. Henning

The Miami Dolphins signed four wide receivers as undrafted free agents following the 2025 NFL Draft, including the versatile A.J. Henning. After spending three seasons at Michigan and transferring to Northwestern for two more, Henning showcased his ability to contribute as a receiver, returner, and even as a rusher. At Michigan, Henning was used sparingly on offense but excelled in the return game. As a sophomore in 2021, he fielded 29 punts, averaging 9.4 yards per return, and added seven kickoff returns, including one for a touchdown. In 2022, he returned a punt for a score and averaged 7.2 yards per return. Henning began his stint at Northwestern in 2023, and started eight games. He tallied 45 receptions for 418 yards, added 27 rushing attempts for 110 yards, and scored four receiving touchdowns along with one rushing touchdown. His 2024 senior year with the Wildcats was his most productive. He posted career highs in yards per reception (10.2) and yards per punt return (11.3). Henning also caught a career-best 59 passes for 603 yards and added four more receiving touchdowns. His efforts earned him All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors as a punt returner in 2024. After finding the end zone in four different ways during his college career, Henning's versatility could mean he's in line for a spot on the Dolphins' practice squad. Miami's receiver room is largely set with Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Malik Washington, and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine penciled in as the top four. The fifth and potential sixth spots on the depth chart will be highly competitive, with Henning battling three other undrafted wideouts and 2024 seventh-round pick Tahj Washington, among others, for roster spots. Henning has a chance to make waves in training camp with his ability to generate yards after the catch and contribute as a rusher on sweeps and end-arounds. He's the type of player Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel could deploy creatively across multiple phases of the game. Henning's speed and positional versatility may prove vital in his bid for a roster spot, though stiff competition awaits for the final places in Miami's receiving corps.

ESPN believes that Notre Dame will have a very early swing game for the 2025 season

If you haven't looked ahead to what Notre Dame football's first few weeks of the 2025 season look like, it's a very front-loaded schedule. The Irish open the season on the road against Miami, then hosting Texas A&M in the home opener. Starting the season against two ranked teams will be a big test for Notre Dame, and ESPN believes that the first game of the year will be its swing game. Mark Schlabach went into details on why this is such an important game for the Irish as he said 'Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman won't have to wait long to learn if his team is a CFP (College Football Playoff) national title contender.' He isn't wrong, and due to the fact that this 'will be a tremendous test for Notre Dame's new starting quarterback, presumably redshirt freshman CJ Carr,' as Schlabach said, it won't be an easy contest. Unfortunately for Freeman, he hasn't done all that well early in the season, in his first the Irish lost the initial two games, then his second was much better, but the competition wasn't nearly at the same level. Last year Northern Illinois knocked off the Irish in the second game, but Notre Dame did win the opener on the road against A&M. There will be a much different focus for the Irish this coming fall, as the expectations for the program have risen significantly due to its impressive 2024 run in the CFP. Don't expect Freeman to ask Carr or even Kenny Minchey to do all that much in the opener, as they'll both still be getting their feet wet at this level. He'll lean on the elite defense, and hopefully the Irish return to South Bend with an early swing game victory.
