Kuhnemann gets a Cricket Australia upgrade after his bowling action is cleared
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Matt Kuhnemann's rollercoaster ride of taking 16 wickets in the Sri Lanka test series before being reported for a suspect bowling action has taken another turn after he was included Tuesday on Cricket Australia's top list of contracted players for 2025-26.
Kuhnemann was voted player of the series as Australia swept both matches in Sri Lanka in February.
The left-arm spinner has played five test matches and taken 25 wickets, including two five-wicket innings.
He was forced to undergo testing for a suspect bowling action following the Sri Lanka tour, and was was cleared following an ICC investigation.
Kuhnemann "was outstanding once again in Sri Lanka and we believe he can play a key role across the next 18 months,' chairman of selectors George Bailey said in a statement unveiling the contract list.
Teenager Sam Konstas was also rewarded with his first Cricket Australia top-tier contract following his Boxing Day test debut against India. The 19-year-old Konstas brazenly scored 60 runs off 65 balls to set up Australia's victory at the Melbourne Cricket Ground en route to a 3-1 series win.
'With Cameron Green and Mitch Marsh returning there will be welcome and healthy competition for places for the World Test Championship and West Indies tours," Bailey said. "In Sam we see promising upside in a young player who will continue to develop at first-class level and in the international environment.'
West Indies will host Australia in three tests and five Twenty20s in June and July. Australia will travel to the Caribbean immediately after the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord's starting June 11.

Brisbane 2032 main stadium gets major funding boost from federal, state governments
BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Queensland state officials said Thursday they had secured a deal with the federal government for the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane which commits 50-50 funding for minor venues and 1.2 billion Australian dollars ($788 million) toward a new main stadium at Brisbane's Victoria Park. The federal government is set to invest more than 3.4 billion Australian dollars ($2.23 billion) in the Games — the single largest contribution towards sporting infrastructure in Australia's history, federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said. 'It is about ensuring that when we hand the keys back after the closing ceremony, Queensland has the infrastructure it needs to build on this incredible legacy for decades to come,' King said. The centerpiece of Brisbane 2032 is a proposed 63,000-seat stadium at the inner-city Victoria Park. Investigative works at the site have begun with geotechnical studies and soil sampling ongoing. Brisbane 2032 chief executive Andrew Liveris welcomed the agreement and said he hopes construction will begin at major venues by the end of 2026. 'Today marks a significant shift in forward momentum following the Queensland government's announcement in March of its 2032 Delivery Plan,' Liveris said. The International Olympic Committee has backed the Queensland government's 2032 venue plan after several false starts, saying the Brisbane Games are 'on the right path."

Wells, Grisham return but Yankees lose again, drop into first-place tie with Blue Jays
TORONTO (AP) — Yankees catcher Austin Wells returned to action Wednesday following a three-game absence, coming on as a pinch runner in the eight inning of New York's 11-9 loss at Toronto. The Yankees are 13-18 since May 28, losing six of the past 10 series. 'We've got to play better,' slugger Aaron Judge said. 'That's what it comes down to. If we play better, we'll put ourselves in a better position.' Outfielder Trent Grisham also returned, coming in to pinch hit for DJ LeMahieu earlier in the eighth and playing center field. Grisham left Monday's game after a cleat caught the turf . Wells had been sidelined since Saturday as Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the catcher was recovering from an invasive test for a circulatory issue in his left index finger . He ran for Giancarlo Stanton after the DH walked. Ben Rice started at catcher against Toronto on Wednesday night after making his second and third starts behind the plate this season against the Athletics last weekend. Rice couldn't come up with a wild pitch from Devin Williams in the bottom of the eighth that allowed George Springer to score the tiebreaking run. 'That on me there,' Rice said. 'I've got to find a way to keep it in front.' Williams said Rice wasn't to blame. 'I've got to make a better pitch there,' Williams said. 'It wasn't the easiest one to block for Ben.' Right-hander Luis Gil missed a scheduled throwing session Tuesday because his wife was giving birth, Boone said before the game. The 2024 AL Rookie of the Year instead will throw on Thursday. Gil has not pitched for the Yankees this season because of a high-grade lat strain in his pitching shoulder. The Yankees recalled right-hander Clayton Beeter from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday and righty Geoff Hartlieb was designated for assignment. Beeter was 0-0 with a 1.02 ERA in 16 games at Triple-A, where he struck out 29 batters in 17 2/3 innings. Beeter had two saves in three chances. 'He's been on our board now for a couple of years kind of pushing the envelope to be part of the mix,' Boone said. 'He's really talented. Hopefully he can come up here and carve out a spot for himself in the bullpen.' Hartlieb made his only Yankees appearance in Tuesday's 12-5 loss , allowing three runs in one inning. ___ AP MLB:

Bailey hits sacrifice fly in 10th to lift Giants over D-backs and snap 4-game losing streak
PHOENIX (AP) — Patrick Bailey's sacrifice fly in the 10th inning brought home Jung Ho Lee and the San Francisco Giants snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 on Wednesday night. The Giants led 5-3 heading into the ninth, but Geraldo Perdomo led off with a single and then Ketel Marte — who was named a National League All-Star starter at second base earlier in the day — launched a tying homer to right off Camilo Doval for his 18th long ball of the season. San Francisco retook the lead in the 10th on Bailey's fly ball to center after Lee advanced to third on an infield single by Heliot Ramos. Doval (4-2) worked the bottom of the 10th for the win. San Francisco's Mike Yastrzemski went deep on the second pitch of the game, driving a fastball into the right field seats. Lee's triple drove home Wilmer Flores to make it 2-0 in the first. The Giants pushed their advantage to 3-0 in the fifth on Rafael Devers' RBI single. Alek Thomas hit a leadoff homer to cut the deficit to 3-1 and the next three batters reached base against Landen Roupp with no outs. Lefty Erik Miller did an admirable job getting out of the jam, allowing Josh Naylor's sacrifice fly but perserving a 3-2 lead. Arizona's Merrill Kelly gave up three runs on five hits and three walks over six innings. The right-hander struck out three. The D-backs' first two batters of the seventh inning reached base, but reliever Randy Rodriguez got out of the tough spot by striking out Tim Tawa and getting Naylor to ground into a double play. Key stat Perdomo reached base five times on three hits and two walks. Up next The teams wrap up the series Thursday night when the Giants send former Arizona LHP Robbie Ray (8-3, 2.75 ERA) to the mound. He'll face D-backs RHP Brandon Pfaadt (8-5, 5.38 ERA). ___
