Teoh Beng Hock group seeks to raise RM50,000 for UN advocacy trip
PETALING JAYA : The Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) is seeking to raise RM50,000 to fund Teoh Lee Lan's advocacy trip to Geneva, where she plans to meet United Nations officials to press for greater accountability over her brother's death.
TBH-ADA president Ng Yap Hwa said a formal complaint was filed yesterday with three top officials at the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
The complaint was lodged with Morris Tidball-Binz, UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions; Alice Jill Edwards, UN special rapporteur on torture; and Ganna Yudkivska, president of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.
'This is not just about putting public pressure on the government, but it is to ensure the government fulfils its international obligations (as a UN member),' Ng told a press conference today.
'The government should not wait until the international community scrutinises this case for them to do their due diligence.'
Lee Lan said it was disheartening that the family had to seek international intervention after years of unanswered questions from the government.
TBH-ADA had been organising forums throughout the country to rally public pressure on Beng Hock's death probe, which was classified as requiring no further action (NFA) by the Attorney‑General's Chambers because of insufficient evidence.
Beng Hock was found dead on July 16, 2009 after falling from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, Selangor, after being questioned for several hours by officers from the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
An inquest into his death initially returned an open verdict. However, in 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that his death was caused by 'one or more unknown persons', including MACC officers.
Before 2018, two special investigation teams had been set up to look into the incident – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor.
In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement.
A reinvestigation was ordered by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in November last year, directing the police to re-examine all aspects of the case.

Teacher accused of molesting disabled 16-year-old student
SEREMBAN, July 6 — A 16-year-old female student with an intellectual disability has alleged that a teacher molested her at a school in Rembau on May 5. Rembau police chief Supt Hasani Hussain said the student, who is enrolled in the Integrated Special Education Programme (PPKI), lodged a report at 5.15 pm yesterday, alleging she was molested by a 36-year-old male teacher around 10.40 am. Initial investigations revealed the incident occurred after the student had completed a cross-country run and was experiencing leg pain. 'According to the student, the teacher massaged her legs, starting from the soles of her feet to her calves and then to her thighs. During this, she felt the teacher had touched a sensitive area,' Hasani said in a statement today. He said the student initially confided in a friend and later informed another teacher about the incident on June 30. The suspect, detained around 10 pm last night, has denied the allegation. The case is still under investigation under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. — Bernama

Cop's fake MC habit exposes Sg Petani syndicate selling forged documents to civil servants for RM30 each
SUNGAI PETANI, July 6 —Police have arrested three men believed to be the masterminds behind the sale of fake medical certificates (MCs) in the district over the past two years. Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said the group's modus operandi involved issuing MCs without the need for any medical consultation or treatment. He said the case came to light during a probe into a breach of integrity involving a low-ranking police personnel who had frequently submitted MCs. 'This led to the discovery of the group selling fake MCs,' he told a press conference at the Kuala Muda district police headquarters here today. According to him, during a raid on a premises in Taman Songket Indah near here at 4.30 am on June 26, police seized various items, including about 20 fake MCs, tablets, rubber stamps bearing the names of doctors, A4-sized paper, a laptop and a printer. Hanyan said the three unemployed suspects, in their 30s and 40s, sold fake MCs for RM25 to RM30 a day, targeting civil servants as their primary 'customers'. He said the main suspect was found to be a heart patient currently receiving treatment at a hospital. 'During each hospital visit, the suspect would note down the attending doctor's name and later use it on rubber stamps. Most of the names belonged to actual doctors, but the job titles were inaccurate,' Hanyan said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 468 of the Penal Code. — Bernama
