Kota Kinabalu: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sabah reacted with joy over confirmation of continued cooperation between GRS and PH in the coming State election, describing it as a positive step for the State. Its head Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said it is good news for Sabah and the people. 'I thank our Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor for upholding the spirit of cooperation between GRS and PH. 'As a PH leader, I welcome such cooperation. Its good news for Sabah,' he said. 'The next step is to discuss seat allocation with PGRS in particular. We will sit down with them. Hopefully, we can iron things out and allocate seats accordingly,' he said. It is understood that the coalition is eyeing around 23 to 25 state seats. Earlier, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah said it would continue its political cooperation with Pakatan Harapan. GRS Chairman cum Chief Minister Hajiji said all component parties in GRS had agreed to join forces with PH following discussions. 'We continue the (political) cooperation that stands today between GRS and PH for the coming PRN17,' he said. Hajiji, who is Gagasan Rakyat President, said a formula (on seats distribution) has been worked out between the two ruling coalitions but not yet finalised, as few more things need to be sorted out. The GRS-PH collaboration was born following the last national election when GRS leaders – who were then under Bersatu which was part of Perikatan Nasional – found themselves having to decide whether to be part of the new Federal Unity Government of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, or stay in the opposition led by PN's Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. The Bersatu election winners soon went under the new GRS grouping. Hajiji said the move was also in line with the strong support GRS received from PH Sabah during the political crisis commonly referred to as the 'Kinabalu Move' aimed at toppling Hajiji in early 2023. Since then, he said, the GRS-PH collaboration brought political stability and progress to Sabah — benefits that justify preserving the alliance. 'Our deepest thanks go to the PH Sabah leaders,' said Hajiji who is also Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) President. He also emphasized the importance of GRS as a strong coalition of local parties, striving to fulfil the aspirations of Sabahans who want primarily local-based parties to dominate state politics. 'GRS, born from the grassroots aspirations, will continue to promote mature and inclusive politics by embracing diversity, upholding consensus values and prioritising stability and progress for the state,' he said. 'PBS and Star, each with their own strengths and influence, are among the core contributors to the foundation and resilience of our political home GRS. 'It is no exaggeration to say that PBS and Star are not just pillars of strength for GRS, but also our close comrades who are always by our side offering support, insights, and advice, in line with their roles in the GRS-PH government,' he said. Nuclear energy under govt review for future power mix
PUTRAJAYA: The government is conducting a structured assessment to explore the role of nuclear energy as a potential source of clean, stable and competitive electricity in the country's future energy mix. This initiative considers the need to diversify energy sources, strengthen long-term energy security, support carbon emission reduction targets, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, in line with Malaysia's climate change commitments and rising energy demand. The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry said the Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organisation (NEPIO), under MyPOWER Corporation, has been tasked with coordinating preparatory efforts based on guidelines recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). "This preparatory phase is being carried out through the coordination of an organised framework via a technical committee mechanism involving ministries, departments and agencies to ensure a comprehensive and integrated national approach. "Its implementation will be guided by the IAEA Milestone Approach, which includes national positioning, the development of legal and regulatory frameworks, stakeholder engagement and human capital development," it said in a statement today. However, it said that no decision has been made at this stage regarding the implementation, type of technology or capacity of any nuclear reactor to be developed. The ministry said the government's priority is to ensure that any future decision is based on comprehensive technical analysis and aligned with national development priorities, while also complying with international obligations. "This is in line with the aspirations of Malaysia Madani, which emphasises long-term national planning that is grounded in knowledge, sustainable resource use and the well-being of the people and future generations." On Thursday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, during the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), said the government is considering nuclear energy as one of the safe, competitive and clean energy sources for the future. Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang was reported as saying that a bill to amend Malaysia's atomic energy legislation may be tabled in the current parliamentary session. – Bernama

BN to contest at least one seat per parliamentary constituency in Sabah polls

PUTATAN (Aug 2): Umno Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has indicated that Barisan Nasional (BN) intends to contest in at least one state seat in each of Sabah's 25 parliamentary constituencies in the upcoming 17th State Election. Speaking to reporters after officiating the Umno Putatan Division's annual delegates' conference on Saturday, Mohamad, fondly known as Tok Mat, said it was 'logical' for the party to field candidates in no fewer than 25 state constituencies. 'We have 25 divisions, so automatically, yes. If we are contesting in one state seat in each parliamentary constituency, then it must be at least 25 seats,' he said. However, when asked if this was confirmed, he clarified that discussions were still ongoing with Pakatan Harapan (PH), BN's coalition partner at the federal level. 'That is what we are currently negotiating. The basis of our negotiation with PH is that each parliamentary constituency must have at least one BN candidate. That is non-negotiable,' he stressed. During his speech at the conference, Mohamad underscored the importance of internal unity and harmony within Umno and BN, noting that voters are drawn to stable, mature and trustworthy parties. 'To gain strength, we must work together. There must be consensus, and that will prevent conflicts and internal rifts. Only then will outsiders view Umno as a harmonious institution,' he said. He added that the next state election is likely to be called soon, possibly after Malaysia Day celebrations in September or October. 'The time is near, and preparations must begin now,' he said, outlining four key focus areas for Umno: perception, election machinery, candidate selection and voter mobilisation. 'Public perception is crucial. We must counter slander and false narratives early. Do not keep quiet or it will burn us from within like fire beneath the ashes.' He emphasised the need for a strong, aggressive campaign machinery and candidates who are not only acceptable to the party but also to the electorate. 'On polling day, getting voters out to vote is vital. There is no point identifying supporters early on if we fail to bring them out on election day.' When asked about featuring young candidates, Mohamad said the decision was up to state and division leaderships, but stressed the importance of a balanced team. 'We cannot say only young people can be candidates. What we need is a good combination — those with experience, energy and specific expertise. That is how we form a strong team and a good government,' he said. Commenting on Gabungan Rakyat Sabah's (GRS) announcement of working with PH in the state polls and Perikatan Nasional's jibe that the cooperation resembled a 'three-way love affair', Mohamad brushed off the remark. 'Everyone has their way. As far as Umno is concerned, we have agreed to go into the state polls with PH. Whether it is a love triangle, square, or pentagon, let them be. I do not want to comment on what others are doing. Let them talk. I know what I want to do,' he said. On the possibility of dissolving the State Assembly after Malaysia Day, Mohamad said it would be a strategic move. 'Malaysia Day will be celebrated in Sabah this year, and it is a fitting time. The term is almost over anyway, so it would be an appropriate moment,' he said. When asked whether the timing was linked to Sabah's 40 per cent revenue entitlement claim, he dismissed any connection, saying that the matter is administrative, not political. 'That issue is not about elections; it is about governance. Whoever forms the next state government must fight for Sabah's rights. It is not just one group's job. It is the responsibility of the government of Sabah.' He reminded that during BN's tenure, significant efforts had already been made through the MA63 committee to fulfil many of the state's demands. 'There are only two or three unresolved issues, mainly involving royalties, and these require further negotiations because they impact the whole country. But it's not true to say that BN did nothing or that only certain people can fight for MA63. Whoever leads Sabah must carry that responsibility,' he said.

Gagasan Rakyat confident of retaining Karamunting seat

SANDAKAN (Aug 2): Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) is confident of defending the Karamunting state seat in the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election. Its Vice President, Datuk Masiung Banah, said this confidence stems from the party's strong grassroots presence in the constituency, led by incumbent assemblyman Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin, who joined the party in March 2023. 'We can see that Gagasan Rakyat's track record in Karamunting over the past three years is very strong, and we believe it will contribute one seat to Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS),' said Masiung, who is also Gagasan Rakyat's Zone 10 coordinator. He was speaking during a final preparatory election briefing held at the division's office in Jalan Laila here on Friday. According to him, the party's election machinery is well-prepared, with its three main wings — Youth, Women, and Beliawanis — mobilised since the end of last year. He added that component parties under GRS and Pakatan Harapan (PH) are also gearing up to ramp up both small- and large-scale political operations in the constituency. 'All six Polling District Centres (PDM) have been activated, and I am confident that under George's leadership, GRS will secure a strong majority in Karamunting this time around,' said Masiung. Hiew first won the Karamunting state seat during the 14th State Election in 2018 and retained it in 2020, both times under the Warisan banner, before joining Gagasan Rakyat last year. Meanwhile, Hiew revealed that 85 per cent of Warisan branch chiefs in the constituency have followed him in supporting Gagasan Rakyat under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Hiew, who previously served as Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing, is now the deputy coordinator of Gagasan Rakyat for Zone 10 in Sandakan.
