Mahindra's AI is the "fastest in the automotive world"

7NEWS10-06-2025

Mahindra claims to have the most advanced in-vehicle artificial intelligence (AI) system, with its latest vehicle architecture taking a significant leap in using machine learning to transform how cars monitor drivers and interact with their environments.
The Indian automaker, which is also the fifth largest IT provider in India, has introduced a new AI system called MAIA (Mahindra Artificial Intelligence Architecture), which it claims is the 'fastest automotive mind in the world' and can process 51 trillion operations per second, enabling complex real-time analysis of driver behaviour.
As a comparison, a current-generation iPhone 16 Pro Max's A180 Pro chip can complete 35 trillion operations per second. Maia uses a Snapdragon 8295 chip with embedded 5G capabilities.
Its driver occupant monitoring system (DOMS) can detect mobile phone usage, track passenger movements, and recognise potential safety risks – reporting them both inside the vehicle and also to external sources.
'We're learning how to use AI in practical ways,' said the lead engineer. For example, the system utilises five radars and multiple cameras to continuously train its auto park assistant, thereby improving parking accuracy through machine learning algorithms.

Other system capabilities include detecting driver posture, monitoring passenger behaviour, and providing advanced diagnostic information.
Interestingly, AI is also being used in the development process itself. Engineers are now utilising machine learning to generate test cases and verify algorithms, particularly in complex areas such as accent recognition in voice interfaces. CarExpert visited a lab in Chennai, India, where this development was taking place.
Currently, the system focuses on monitoring and data collection rather than direct driving intervention. While not yet controlling the vehicle, the technology represents a significant step towards more adaptive automotive systems.
The architecture enables software partners to integrate new applications more easily, suggesting a more flexible approach to vehicle development in the future.
Mahindra's approach highlights a growing trend in automotive technology: transforming vehicles from simple transportation tools into intelligent, data-driven platforms that can learn and adapt.
As with all other brands, the move toward more data and intelligent overlays opens the door to numerous privacy concerns with vehicles that can not only monitor and record their drivers but also dob on them.

2026 Tesla Model Y Performance breaks cover

Tesla's overhauled performance SUV has been spied testing, completely undisguised, in the Swiss Alps. The 2026 Tesla Model Y Performance has been revealed in a pair of short clips – captured with another Tesla – that were submitted to German-language YouTube channel Nextmove. The updated flagship mid-size electric SUV is expected to be revealed later this year. Given the lack of camouflage and the bold colour – which appears orange in the footage but could be Ultra Red – this particular example could be being filmed or photographed for promotional material. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. The footage of the front-end is too grainy to make much out, apart from what appears to be a more aggressive bumper, but the clearer view of the rear-end shows what appears to be a sportier bumper treatment and a black lip spoiler. The Model Y Performance also appears to be riding on new wheels, which may measure 21 inches. Other changes could mirror those made to the Model 3 Performance sedan with its substantial 2024 update, including upgraded brakes and the addition of adaptive suspension. The Model 3 Performance also gained ventilated front sports seats, metal pedals, and carbon-fibre trim. However, Chinese-built examples like those sold here received a 15kW cut in power – to 343kW – and a reduction in electric driving range on the WLTP cycle from 547km to 528km. Nevertheless, the Model 3 Performance's claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time was reduced by 0.2 seconds to just 3.1 seconds. The updated Model Y currently uses a 79kWh battery in Long Range guise, making it good for 551km of WLTP range – an improvement of 18km on the pre-update model, which offered 533km of range. The updated Model Y range featured a substantial visual update externally with new front- and rear-end styling, plus a refreshed interior featuring an 8.0-inch rear passenger screen, ambient lighting, and screen-based gear selection. More changes were made under the skin, too. The suspension was retuned for greater comfort, the steering was retuned for greater responsiveness, and redesigned body castings are claimed to reduce the number of parts and the amount of road noise. The updated Performance isn't the only fresh Model Y variant on the radar. Also expected to join the existing Model Y lineup is a new seven-seat variant. Above: Model Y, Model 3 Performance

Volkswagen Amarok 10 Deserts Edition arrives alongside price cuts across the MY25 ute lineup

Pricing for the Volkswagen Amarok 10 Deserts Edition has been announced along with national drive-away pricing across the updated MY25 Volkswagen Amarok dual-cab ute lineup, bringing the cost of every variant down. The entry-level Amarok Core TDI405 Core is now priced at $55,990 drive-away – $1000 more than its previous list price which did not include on-road costs, effectively making it up to $4000 cheaper than before. The biggest cut, as predicted by CarExpert, has been applied to the only petrol model grade, the Amarok TSI452 Aventura, which now costs $79,990 drive-away (previously $82,990 plus on-roads). Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. The limited-edition 10 Deserts Edition TDI500 joins the lineup at $69,990 drive-away, positioned between the Amarok Life TDI500 ($61,990 drive-away) and the Style TDI500 ($72,740 drive-away). The new model grade was inspired by the Guiness World Record set by a Volkswagen Amarok – using a modified V6 – after it crossed Australia's 10 deserts in six days and 17 hours. 'With the 10 Deserts Edition, the refinement of the Amarok has been given a tougher edge, offering genuine off-road ability and benchmark ground clearance, while still being a premium-appointed ute that drivers want to be in,' said Volkswagen Australia commercial vehicles product manager Michael Cenci. The 10 Deserts Edition brings off-road focused upgrades including 17-inch satin black wheels wrapped in Continental ATR (all-terrain) tyres, a 40mm suspension lift and extra underbody protection. The changes bring 275mm of ground clearance – 3mm more than the Ford Ranger Raptor and a healthy increase from the rest of the Amarok range's 235mm. A black sports bar, soft tonneau cover, floor mats and special decals complete the 10 Deserts Edition treatment. Other changes for the MY25 Amarok lineup include a 230V power socket in the tub of Style, PanAmericana and Aventura grades, facilitated by a 400W invertor that enables electrical appliances, laptops and battery packs to be plugged in. The same model grades also now come with Trailer Assist as standard, which Volkswagen says has been updated to work more seamlessly with the Amarok's Rear Traffic Alert system. There are no changes on the outside apart from a new Reed Green Metallic paint colour, which replaces Mid Blue Metallic on the Amarok colour chart. Cab/chassis Core, Life and Style variants are fitted with a factory alloy tray measuring 1900mm long and 1835mm wide, with a 1650mm internal length, for an additional $4000 over their pickup equivalents. A 243kg steel tray can also be added as a dealer-fit option instead of the alloy tray, which has an official weight of 132kg, and both tubs are covered by Volkswagen Australia's five-year, unlimited-kilometre new vehicle warranty.
