RM1 million flood mitigation project starts in Kampung Lubok Kasau next month
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh announced the medium-term initiative, funded by the state's Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), which includes river channelling, embankment stabilisation, and raising riverbanks along a 2.2-kilometre stretch of Sungai Bemban.
The project, expected to conclude by November, follows three flood incidents recorded in the village between March and April this year.
Ab Rauf attributed the flooding to the shallow depth of Sungai Bemban, which causes overflow into residential areas during heavy rainfall.
During his visit to Kampung Lubok Kasau under the State Assemblyman for the People programme, the Chief Minister noted that over 60 houses are affected whenever the river overflows.
The Melaka DID has also sought funding under the 13th Malaysia Plan to study drainage systems and flood risk management in flood-prone areas, including Kampung Asam Kumbang.
Resident Abas Md Jenis, 68, shared that his house floods at least three times yearly, with the worst incident in 2021 reaching chest-high water levels.
Having lived there for 40 years, he built two boats as a precaution for evacuation. 'Flooding affects lives and property. I hope this project reduces its impact,' he said. - Bernama

JASIN: Long plagued by repeated floods, villagers in Kampung Lubok Kasau here can expect much-needed relief with the launch of a major flood mitigation project next month, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh says. The Melaka Chief Minister said more than 300 villagers stand to benefit from the RM1.5mil initiative, which will be funded through an emergency allocation by the Irrigation and Drainage Department. 'This is an extraordinary step to protect the safety and well-being of our people. Kampung Lubok Kasau has been hit by floods three times between this March and April alone,' he said after visiting the project site on Friday (July 4). Ab Rauf said the works will include deepening Sungai Bemban by stabilising riverbanks and raising a 2.2km embankment to reduce the risk of future flooding. "Work at the site is slated to begin on August 1 with completion targeted for November," he said. He said that the state government is also preparing a long-term strategy to address flood risks in the area. "A proposal has been submitted under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) for a detailed study of drainage and flood risk management, covering Kampung Lubok Kasau, Kampung Asam Kumbang and other flood-prone areas within the Bemban constituency. 'The findings will provide the foundation for a comprehensive, sustainable solution to safeguard nearby communities,' he added.

Crop and livestock supply stable despite hot weather in Malaysia
SHAH ALAM: The supply of crops and livestock across Malaysia remains stable despite the prolonged hot and dry weather triggered by the Southwest Monsoon, according to the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM). Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu stated that the ministry has not received any significant reports of major supply disruptions. While some weather-related complaints have surfaced, they remain isolated and manageable. 'Overall, disruptions are minimal and the situation remains under control,' he said after launching the Agriculture Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) @KPKM carnival here today. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) earlier confirmed that the Southwest Monsoon, which began on May 10, is expected to persist until September. Separately, Mohamad highlighted the coconut industry's potential as a key economic driver, similar to pineapples. He noted increasing demand for both mature coconuts, actively cultivated in Sabah, and young coconuts, particularly from China. 'The crop is expected to generate impressive export value, just like pineapples, which have surpassed RM1 billion in sales,' he said. Mohamad previously commended the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) for boosting production and export growth in the sector.
