
Faking 'green credentials' can hamper brand value; discourage sustainable shopping: IIM study

, a study by Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Lucknow has found. The research explored how
deceptive green marketing
, also knows as "
greenwashing
", can create a negative impact on the
consumer trust
, brand perception, and buying behaviour.
Conducted in collaboration with researchers from the University of Hail, Saudi Arabia, University of Turin, Italy, Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, Saudi Arabia, and Institute of Management Studies Ghaziabad, India, the research has been published in the prestigious journal, Business Strategy and the Environment.
According to officials, greenwashing has become a common practice among brands to attract consumers, build a positive perception, and manipulate buying behaviour.
Unlike earlier studies conducted which were not able to assess how it can affect consumer attitude towards a brand, the research team bridged this gap by studying the psychology of how consumers interpret and react to greenwashing, they said.
The team developed a framework using Attribution Theory and the Elaboration Likelihood Model. This framework with an emphasis on "situational involvement", meaning the degree of personal relevance a consumer assigns to
environmental issues
, helped in analysing "why" and "how" people react to greenwashing.
"The research team tested the developed framework on 353 consumers from the United States of America and analysed the data using structural equation modelling, a method mostly used in the social and behavioural science fields," said Sushant Kumar, Assistant Professor, Marketing Management, IIM Lucknow.
Kumar said that the study found that greenwashing does not just fool people; it also damages brand trust and discourages sustainable shopping.
"Greenwashing is dangerous for brands, but consumers appreciate
green claims
. A business' green claims should be substantiated by evidence that can be verified by consumers. When consumers grow sceptical about a brand exaggerating or faking green credentials, their positive feelings about the brand drop," he said.
"People with greater environmental knowledge are more likely to critically assess eco-claims made by the brands and react more strongly," Kumar said.
The team now plans to explore several other aspects of
consumer behaviour
such as recommendation of a brand or product involved in greenwashing. The team also plans to study the consumers' sentiments while consuming green brands and later discovering false claims by the brand.

Despite the high demand, there's a shortage of skilled candidates, particularly those with practical skills in emerging technologies. Mr Kumar also weighed in on the hiring process, he said, "We pay a damn good Rs50 Lakh base salary plus relocation, food, and the chance to work with some of the best talent out there. So yes, at this pay scale, expecting code that actually runs is justified." Such issues have forced companies to become more selective and focus on practical skills over formal education. "I am confused, Am I the only one facing all this or this is becoming the new normal in hiring nowadays?" Kumar said. His post grabbed massive traction, with one user saying, "I totally get you, Umesh. I've manually reviewed 300 resumes in the last 2 months, 15 were decent, 2 got the offer." "Its gonna get a lot harder to find great talent with students using AI in college," another said. A third suggested, "There are good talent out there. When you post a role, LinkedIn without a proper corporate Recruiter account is already limiting who can view, hence what you need is Discovery of Talent who haven't seen it (Recruiters reaching out). Andhra Pradesh notifies capital region land pooling scheme rules, 2025
AMARAVATI : The Andhra Pradesh government on Tuesday notified the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Land Pooling Scheme (Formulation and Implementation) Rules, 2025, which will govern the unique method of pooling land for building the greenfield capital city of Amaravati. S Suresh Kumar, principal secretary to the government, Municipal Administration and Urban Development, said these rules shall apply to the 'capital region' except the 'capital city area' which will continue to be governed by the Andhra Pradesh Capital City Land Pooling Scheme (Formulation and Implementation) Rules, 2015. "In keeping with the will of the Government to build 'People's Capital' and for building the necessary concomitant infrastructural projects like airports, ports and all other necessary projects, the procurement mechanism of the land has been designed to be a voluntary scheme," said Kumar in a government order (GO). It is based on mutual consensus between the landowners and the state/authority, said Kumar, adding that this is a unique method of procurement of land, which is named and styled as 'Land Pooling Scheme'. The 'Land Pooling Scheme' rules come at a time when the government is planning to turn greenfield capital city Amaravati into a 'mega city' by combining adjacent Mangalagiri, Tadepalli, Guntur, and Vijayawada with Amaravati. This endeavour aims to pool an additional 40,000 acres of land, besides the 54,000 acres of land on which the government is already sitting for Amaravati. The government is planning to build an international airport in Amaravati. The 'Land Pooling Scheme' has been designed for developing the Capital Region wherein the land parcels owned by individual farmers and owners or group of owners are consolidated by the authority under a development scheme, he said. According to Kumar, the 'Land Pooling Scheme' is a better scheme formulated by the Andhra Pradesh State Legislature owing to the mandate enabled under Sections 107 and 108 of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. "The broad objective of the scheme is to do justice to the families affected by the construction of a Livable and Sustainable Capital Region for the State of Andhra Pradesh and also to the farmers and land owners in the Capital Region and also to make them avail a better compensation and also with a view to make them Partners in the State Development Process," said the principal secretary. It is designed in such a manner that the participant land owners are fairly compensated with the allotment of the reconstituted plot along with the developed infrastructure, among other benefits, said Kumar.

Now, it's creators and researchers.' According to him, every few decades, the job market resets, moving away from rigid, linear career paths to reward impact over pedigree. 'The rules change,' he added.
