Doug Whaley: Steelers could have drafted Aaron Rodgers in 2005
Appearing on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh, former Steelers pro personnel director Doug Whaley said that, as Rodgers plunged through the first round, the Steelers were watching the situation.

'We wouldn't have had to [trade up],' Whaley said, via Nick Farabaugh of PennLive.com. 'We would've just sat there. We had him higher than that. We were surprised he was slipping.'
The Packers ended the slide at No. 24. The Steelers didn't pick that year until No. 30. (They took tight end Heath Miller.)
If Rodgers had been on the board at No. 30, what would the Steelers have done? They'd used a first-round pick in 2004 on quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who helped the team to a 15-1 record and a berth in the AFC Championship.
Rodgers is the objectively better passer. But Roethlisberger won two Super Bowls. But Rodgers beat Roethsliberger in a Super Bowl.

And in the first Super Bowl won by the Steelers since the 1979 season, Roethlisberger didn't have a stellar day. He completed nine of 21 passes for 123 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions in the 21-10 win over the Seahawks. (He also rushed for 25 yards and a touchdown on seven attempts.)
What would Rodgers have done in Pittsburgh, as a rookie and beyond? We'll never know. But we will know how he does in 2025, four years after Roethlisberger retired.

Bill Belichick, North Carolina football docuseries coming to Hulu
It appears Bill Belichick's first season with North Carolina football will find its way on TV after all. A docuseries featuring Belichick and the Tar Heels is reportedly coming to Hulu, according to Front Office Sports on Friday, July 18. North Carolina was nearly the team to be featured this offseason on HBO's "Hard Knocks," a show that chronicles one NFL team during training camp each season. The Tar Heels would've been the first college program ever featured on the show, although the plans reportedly fell through just days before the show was set to be announced. REQUIRED READING: Bill Belichick says Jordon Hudson 'doesn't have anything to do' with North Carolina football Multiple reports added Belichick's girlfriend, 24-year-old Jordon Hudson, played an "instrumental role" in HBO moving away from North Carolina for "Hard Knocks," as she requested to be heavily involved in the docuseries. Belichick recently gave his answer on the potential "Hard Knocks" series during a podcast appearance with Ryan Clark on the "Pivot Podcast." 'Hard Knocks is training camp, and we're not training camp. We're just not,' Belichick said. 'That's not what we are. The drama of training camp, who's a cut and all that. Like, we're a season, and they don't want that. Yeah, there are film issues too, but forget about the film issues. Just say you could straighten all those out, Hard Knocks just didn't fit for us.' Belichick, 73, is a six-time Super Bowl champion head coach with the New England Patriots, which he coached from 2000-23. The 2025 season marks his first year coaching in college football, despite being the oldest head coach in Division I FBS. Belichick has been one of the largest subjects of discussion of the college football offseason, from his decision to coach at North Carolina to his relationship with Hudson. A docuseries by Disney-owned Hulu featuring Belichick and the Tar Heels is set to be appointment viewing for numerous college football fans.

5 Bills starting jobs that could be up for grabs in 2025
The Buffalo Bills are a potenital Super Bowl team in 2025. Even so, that does not mean the roster is set. The depth chart could flip during training camp for the better. Here are five potential starting jobs up for grabs during training camp: Wide receiver The Bills have Josh Allen at quarterback but are not known as a team with any huge threats at receiver. Khalil Shakir is the lone returning wideout that is secure. Shakir lines up in the slot and as much as the Bills want Keon Coleman to step up in Year 2, nothing is guaranteed. Josh Palmer and Elijah Moore are names to watch for players on the outside. Cornerback Maxwell Hairston is a first-round rookie but as Kaiir Elam has shown us, just because you're an early pick, it does not mean you have a job. Hairston and returning fan favorite Tre'Davious White are the favorites to start across from No. 1 cornerback Christian Benford. Safety Cole Bishop did not start out of the gate as a second-round rookie in 2024. Damar Hamlin did. It's likely those two will battle for the spot next to Taylor Rapp during training camp. Running back James Cook is the starter on paper, don't get us wrong. But his contract situation? You never know what could happen... Punter Sam Martin is no more at punter. Its Jake Camarda vs. Brad Robbins during training camp.

Eagles Star Jalen Hurts Ranked Among NFL's Top Franchise Players
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Fresh off winning Super Bowl MVP, Jalen Hurts has cemented himself as one of the top performers of his generation. Though his perception around the league is slightly polarizing, many still agree that the Philadelphia Eagles have one of the NFL's top building blocks. Since taking over as the Eagles' starting QB, Hurts has yielded big results for the franchise. Philadelphia has been to the Super Bowl twice during his tenure, and was able to secure a championship last season. On top of this, Hurts nearly secured MVP honors in the regular season back in 2022 after leading the Eagles to a 14-1 record. Critics try to discredit Hurts because of the system that has been built around him. While the Eagles have one of the league's deeper rosters, they succeed at the highest level because of their QB. He is a strong leader the team rallies behind, and his versatile skill set allows the offense to be so dynamic. Hurts nearly came in at the top spot, slotting in at No. 3. The only players put ahead of him were Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson. "Yes, Hurts doesn't always produce jaw-dropping numbers. He's supported by a terrific supporting cast, headlined by skill-position stars like A.J. Brown, Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith. His career stat line, which includes 55 rushing touchdowns, is buoyed by a terrific offensive line and Philly's infamous 'Tush Push,'" wrote BR's Kristopher Knox. "However, Hurts has played consistently well and has often been at his best in the brightest moments. He's guided the Eagles to the postseason in all four years as a full-time starter and has appeared in two Super Bowls, winning one." After being able to retain most of last year's roster, the Eagles are primed to go on another Super Bowl run. As the leader of the offense, it falls on Hurts to make sure this collection of talent continues to fire on all cylinders. Hurts and the Eagles will begin their quest for a second straight championship in less than a week when training camp gets underway.
