Bengal won't remain silent over torture of migrant workers: TMC

Time of India3 days ago
Kolkata: Bengali-speaking migrant workers were facing "persecution" in BJP-governed states and being branded Bangladeshis,
Trinamool Congress
Rajya Sabha member Samirul Islam said on Monday.
"These migrant workers are being detained without any police records. Authorities are not even contacting the state govt to verify their citizenship. What, then, is the motive of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah?" Samirul, who is also chairman of West Bengal Migrant Worker Welfare Board, said on X.
Trinamool posted the same from its official X handle.

"Do they intend to punish Bengal in this illegal way — bypassing all Indian laws — simply because they failed to win the state electorally?" Samirul wrote, adding: "If the govt led by @narendramodi and @AmitShah believes it can continue to torment Bengal in this manner, they are mistaken.
Bengal will not remain silent. Under the leadership of @MamataOfficial, we will not allow the voices of the poor to be crushed simply because they speak Bengali.
We will fight this battle — and we will fight it on our terms."
Samirul said if infiltration had taken place, the responsibility lay with BSF. Reiterating what CM Mamata Banerjee had brought up many times, he said: "There are many migrant workers from other states living in Bengal. Have you ever heard of them facing such treatment?"
Samirul also questioned the legality of the detentions.

He said cops were detaining people for over 24 hours, without producing them in court. "Which law allows them to do so? Police are even refusing to accept Aadhaar Card, EPIC and ration card as identity proof," he said.
The MP said Bengali was spoken by "polymaths and patriots like Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Was BJP now humiliating stalwarts like these, he asked.
BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya said there were similar incidents of migrant workers being pushed back in Tamil Nadu. "We have been watching the same trend in non-BJP states and that is primarily due to the influx of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. In many of these cases, Bangladeshi immigrants sneak into Bengal, get hold of fake documents from the Barasat-Basirhat area, and then spread into different parts of the country.
This has triggered antagonism against migrant workers from Bengal. Moreover, Trinamool's narrative of outsiders has alienated people from Bengal," he claimed.

Gadkari launches road projects worth 4.6k crore in state

1 2 3 Ranchi/Garhwa: Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari laid foundation stones of three road projects worth Rs 1,700 crore and inaugurated seven road projects worth Rs 4,650 crore in the state on Thursday at two separate programmes held in Ranchi and Garhwa. Stating that the Centre is already working on projects worth Rs 2 lakh crore in Jharkhand, Gadkari said plans are afoot for additional projects worth Rs 1 lakh crore in the state. In Garhwa, Gadkari laid the foundation stone for Rs 1,330 crore four-lane project measuring 32 km from Chattisgarh-Jharkhand border to Gumla on NH-43. That apart, he inaugurated the Rs 1,130 crore four-lane Garhwa bypass road measuring 22.73 km on NH-75 under the Ranchi-Varanasi economic corridor. With the construction of the by-pass road from to Khajuri village (Garhwa district), the residents heaved a sigh of relief. The by-pass from Shankha village (Palamu district) to Khajuri village (Garhwa district) links about two dozen villages in Palamu and Garhwa. He also sanctioned Garhwa-Ambikapur four-lane road and few other projects worth around Rs 2,460 crore in Garhwa district. "More projects worth Rs 75,000 crore are in the offing, under various stages," he said. Setting timelines for a few ongoing projects, he said that the Rs 36,000-crore Varanasi-Ranchi-Kolkata corridor will be over by March 2028. A six lane between Delhi-Kolkata estimated around Rs 31,700-crore will be completed by June 2026 and Ranchi-Patna four-lane economic corridor worth Rs 8,900 crore is eyeing December 2029 deadline. State finance minister Radhakrishana Kishore, who was present in Garhwa, cited how Garhwa and Palamu have stopped receiving security related expenditure (SRE) scheme owing to Naxal menace but has now stopped getting it. "Centre says that Naxal menace is now over in Garhwa and Palamu but I personally believe that it is contained only because of 196 police pickets. Remove those pickets, and you will realise how troublesome law and order is here again. Hence, we must continue to get those funds to address the challenges in this region," he said, adding that these regions are rain shadow area and needs special assistance to stop migration and further development projects. Gadkari advised the minister to get an official order passed from the govt and he will help in building over 1,000 ponds through NHAI free of cost like he did in Vidharbha (Maharashtra) to tide over water crisis in farm dominated areas.

Sri Ram Sene's protest march stopped by police in Belagavi

Belagavi: Hundreds of Sri Ram Sene activists, led by their chief Pramod Mutalik, attempted to launch the 'Ingali Chalo' protest march from Belagavi on Thursday, condemning the recent assault on cow vigilantes at Ingali village in Hukkeri taluk. However, police detained the activists before the march could commence. The protest was in response to the incident where five Sri Ram Sene members were allegedly tied to a coconut tree and assaulted by locals in Ingali village. Belagavi police have since arrested four accused and registered a suo-motu case in connection with the attack. According to Belagavi superintendent of police Dr Bhimashankar Guled, the conflict was triggered after the activists allegedly entered the residence of a Muslim family, causing panic among women inside. He said this intrusion provoked the reaction from villagers. The SP also raised concerns about the background of one of the assaulted individuals, who is a rowdy sheeter, and questioned whether he officially represented the Sri Ram Sene. Rejecting the SP's version of events as 'false' and 'misleading,' Sri Ram Sene launched the 'Ingali Chalo' campaign. Protesters first formed a human chain at Rani Channamma Circle, raised slogans against the govt, and later marched to the deputy commissioner's office to submit a memorandum. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trending in in 2025: Local network access control [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo As they proceeded toward Ingali, police detained several leaders, including district president Gangadhar Kulkarni and Ravikumar Kokitkar. Earlier, while addressing the gathering, Pramod Mutalik condemned the attack on SRS workers, stating, "This is not Pakistan or Afghanistan. Assaulting cow vigilantes in such a Taliban-style manner is unconstitutional. The govt must take strict action. If this repeats, the Hindu community will respond." In response to SP Guled's remarks questioning the involvement of a rowdy sheeter in the vigilante group, Mutalik defended the individual. "Today, police are branding even Hindu activists like Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat and Chakravarthy Sulibele as rowdies. This is an attempt to divert public attention from the real issue." He alleged that the administration is trying to protect the accused and suppress cow protection efforts by discrediting the activists.

Teachers to be relieved of midday meal duty

Dharwad: Following the failure of Mission Vidyakashi to achieve the target in SSLC examination-2025, the district administration has taken several reformative measures to ensure that the Mission succeeds atleast in 2025-2026. Burden of non-teaching, non-educational assignments on teachers was said to be one of the main reasons for the dip in passing percentage in SSLC examination and there was demand from the teachers to reduce this burden. The passing percentage in Dharwad district has come down to 67.6% in 2025 from 72.6% in 2024. The school education and literacy department has issued a circular on July 1, 2025 barring the officials of education department and other departments from summoning orally or in writing, the teachers for non-teaching, non-educational works during school hours. The circular even says that no competitive examinations will be held in schools during working days. Taking a cue from the education department's circular, district minister Santosh Lad held a meeting of officers from school education and literacy department in the district and discussed measures to enhance the quality of education and ensure that teachers are consistently present in schools to discharge their duties. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The New £25 per Month Private Medical Insurance That's Sweeping the UK Private Medical Plans Get Quote Undo Lad stated that NGOs distributing mid-day meals in the district must also take responsibility for supplying eggs and bananas to they fail to do so, alternative arrangements will be made immediately, he said and asked the NGOs concerned to respond to his suggestion. "Currently, teachers are procuring eggs and bananas from the market and distributing them to students, which is consuming valuable teaching time and adding pressure. This is negatively impacting the quality of education," he said. "Teachers' issues must be addressed and resolved. The DDPI and BEOs must actively work to resolve such problems and report to the DC and the ZP CEO," the minister said. Deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu said that the current system of distributing eggs and bananas separately in schools has increased the workload for teachers and headmasters, disrupting effective classroom teaching. A lot of time is spent on distributing and recording data related to the supply of these items. Even minor delays or issues in implementing the scheme are being blamed on the teachers, which is leading to undue stress for them. A formal appeal has been made regarding this, as it is affecting the quality of learning. Teachers should not be held accountable for minor errors in distribution. Immediate steps are required in this regard, Divya said. Representatives from Iskcon and Adamya Chetana, the two organisations currently distributing mid-day meals in the district, said that they would discuss the matter with their trust heads and respond.
