Man charged over death of scientist found injured on street
Dr Fortune Gomo, 39, who was originally from Zimbabwe, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, which happened on South Road at about 16:25 on Saturday.
The 20-year-old suspect is expected to appear before Dundee Sheriff Court on Monday.
Dr Gomo, who worked for Scottish Water, lived in the city and was a graduate of the University of Dundee.
Prof Nigel Seaton, interim principal and vice-chancellor, said the university was "shocked" by the death of the former research assistant.
Det Supt Peter Sharp, the officer in charge of the inquiry, said: "Firstly, my thoughts remain with Fortune's family at this incredibly sad time.
"They are being supported by specialist officers and I would ask that their privacy is respected."
He added inquiries were continuing and said the incident "poses no wider risk to the public".
The senior officer said his team were following a number of lines of inquiry.
Det Supt Sharp added: "I am also acutely aware of content circulating on social media and would urge the public not to speculate about the circumstances of the incident.
"The public will notice a visibly increased police presence in the area and I would encourage anyone who has any concerns to speak with our officers."
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the force.
Prof Seaton said Dr Gomo was a PhD student and then postdoctoral research assistant in geography at the University of Dundee until February 2022.
Dr Gomo had recently joined Scottish Water as a senior service planner in water resource planning and was "thriving in her career".
Prof Seaton said: "Her death, following an alleged attack in South Road, Dundee, on Saturday afternoon, is a truly shocking event in our city and for our University community.
"It will be particularly distressing for those who knew and worked with Fortune throughout her time here at the University, and for all of those in our close-knit community of African colleagues and students.
"Our thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues at this tragic time."
He said students affected by Dr Gomo's death could find "support and solace" in the university's Chaplaincy Centre, which will open on Monday.

Former Scottish international footballer Colin Hendry has been given a 12-month community order and a restraining order for harassing his ex-partner. The former central defender who captained Scotland at a World Cup and helped Blackburn Rovers win the Premiership title, was sentenced at Preston Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. Hendry, 59, had admitted harassment of his former partner over a period of six months after their relationship ended. Natasha Clark, senior crown prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) North West, said: 'Colin Hendry harassed a former partner for over six months after their relationship ended after she stopped returning his calls. 'He ignored her wishes and breached boundaries she put in place, using multiple different platforms to contact her. 'Hendry's behaviour was intimidating and persistent, causing the victim immense distress, but despite this he initially refused to accept it was harassment. 'This outcome is a clear indication that the CPS will not hesitate to prosecute anyone guilty of harassment whether this is in person or online.' The court heard Hendry sent his ex messages from multiple different email accounts, utilising no caller ID to call her after she blocked his number. When his calls went unanswered, he turned to other means including dozens of emails and messaging her on LinkedIn. After her saying she no longer wanted any kind of relationship with him, Hendry consistently attempted to contact her, showing up to her house with unwanted gifts and flowers on several occasions. The victim reported Hendry to the police, saying she felt depressed and anxious because of his behaviour. She said she was unable to leave the house without fearing an unannounced visit from him. Lancashire Police contacted Hendry to warn him about his behaviour, telling him to stop all communications to the ex-partner which were unwanted. While Hendry admitted to his conduct, he tried to deny it was harassment, claiming he never received a written warning from police so continued to contact her and that he was simply concerned for the affected person and her dog. Hendry later admitted one count of harassment without violence. He started his football career with Keith in the Highland League before moving to Dundee then winning the league title with Blackburn Rovers and also played for Manchester City. He was Scotland's captain for the 1998 World Cup campaign and also played for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

Former captain Brendan Taylor to make emotional return to Zimbabwe cricket after 3 ½-year ban
BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe (AP) — Former Zimbabwe cricket captain Brendan Taylor is set to return to international cricket after serving a 3 ½-year ban for breaching the sport's anti-corruption code. Taylor has been named in Zimbabwe's 16-member squad for the second test against New Zealand, starting in Bulawayo on Aug. 7. 'I certainly did think it was all done, but here I am - and it's an overwhelming feeling of gratitude,' Taylor said in a statement issued by Zimbabwe Cricket on Wednesday. 'I have to pinch myself a little to realise that I'm actually here. I've been soaking it all up and embracing every moment. It's just been a really nice integration. 'The last year and a half has certainly been dedicated to my return. I've put in an immense amount of work - from fitness to the technical side to diet - and I'm feeling a lot leaner, fitter and mentally stronger. That's only been possible through sobriety.' The International Cricket Council banned Taylor in Jan. 2022 after he admitted to four charges under the anti-corruption code stemming from an incident in 2019 when he said he accepted $15,000 from businessmen in India, who asked him to fix international games. Taylor claimed he took the money but never fixed any games. He also was found guilty of an anti-doping offense after testing positive for the stimulant Benzoylecognine, which is a cocaine metabolite. Taylor has undergone a thorough rehabilitation programme and has according to ZC, the former captain has 'consistently demonstrated a sincere commitment to personal growth, accountability and restoring trust.' 'Brendan has endured an incredibly difficult chapter in his life and shown genuine remorse, coupled with a powerful determination to make things right – not just for himself but for the good of the game in Zimbabwe,' ZC managing director Givemore Makoni said.
