French first lady appeals in gender rumors case: Lawyer
On Thursday, the Paris appeals court overturned earlier convictions against the two women for spreading false claims -- that went viral online -- that Brigitte Macron, 72, used to be a man.
Disinformation on Macron's gender has circulated on social media for years. Her 24-year age difference with President Emmanuel Macron has also attracted much comment.
Brigitte Macron filed a libel complaint against the two women after they posted a YouTube video in December 2021, alleging she had once been a man named Jean-Michel Trogneux -- who is actually Brigitte Macron's brother.
In the video, defendant Amandine Roy, a self-proclaimed spiritual medium, interviewed Natacha Rey, a self-described independent journalist, for four hours on her YouTube channel.
Rey spoke about the 'state lie' and 'scam' she claimed to have uncovered that Jean-Michel Trogneux had changed gender to become Brigitte, and then married the future president.
The claim went viral, including among conspiracy theorists in the United States.
A lower court in September last year had ordered the two women to pay 8,000 euros ($9,400) in damages to Brigitte Macron, and 5,000 euros to her brother.
Brigitte Macron's lawyer Jean Ennochi told AFP Sunday that her brother, too, was taking his case against the dismissal of the charges to the highest appeals court, the Court de Cassation.

Italian celebrity chef questioned by antiterrorism unit over anti-Israel posts
LONDON: Italian celebrity chef Rubio, born Gabriele Rubini, has been questioned by Italy's antiterrorism police and had his electronic devices seized over a series of social media posts critical of Israel's actions in Gaza. A vocal pro-Palestine activist, Rubio was briefly detained and interrogated last week by Digos — Italy's antiterrorism division — on charges of inciting racial hatred, according to his friend and journalist Alberto Fazolo, who shared details of the case on Monday. Fazolo said Rubio's X account posts triggered the investigation, describing it as a 'blitz' aimed at obtaining data from his online activity, an operation usually carried out by a different police unit. 'Death to diplomats complicit in the genocide that has been ongoing for 77 years, death to colonialism, supremacism, racism, and anti-Muslim hatred. Death therefore to Zionism and the Jewish colony. Long live Palestine and the native Palestinian Semites,' one of them read. Fazolo said Rubio remains free but has lost access to his social media accounts and private messages during the investigation. Authorities are reportedly reviewing his Telegram and Signal chats as part of the probe. His accounts remain publicly visible, but he is unable to use them. 'Gabriele is free, he is keen to assure you that he is well,' Fazolo said. 'But for a while he will not have the opportunity to communicate through his channels or contact details.' Rubio has long been a controversial figure in Italy due to his outspoken criticism of Israeli policy and strong support for the Palestinian cause. Pro-Israeli groups have previously accused him of antisemitism, which Rubio denies. Earlier this year, he drew fresh backlash after urging his followers to submit war crimes complaints against Israeli Maj. Gen. Ghassan Alian, who was visiting Rome at the time. In May 2024, Rubio was violently assaulted outside his home by six unidentified attackers armed with bricks and hammers, an attack his supporters linked to his activism. Fazolo said Rubio has 'been persecuted for years' due to his efforts to raise awareness about what he calls the 'ethnic cleansing of Palestine.'

Suspect linked to Russian language cybercriminal forum arrested in Ukraine
A person suspected of being the administrator for the Russian language cybercriminal forum was arrested in Ukraine, with the assistance of the French police and Europol, the French Public Prosecutor's Office said on Wednesday. Active since 2013, this forum was one of the main hubs for global cybercrime. It facilitated the sale of malware, access to compromised systems, stolen data, and ransomware-related services. The forum was paired with an encrypted Jabber messaging server, facilitating anonymous exchanges between cybercriminals, the statement added.

Germany seeks US guarantee before sending Patriots to Ukraine
Germany needs firm US assurances that it will quickly receive replacement Patriot anti-missile systems if it sends two of its own units to Ukraine, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Wednesday. In comments to Der Spiegel news magazine, Pistorius said European NATO members needed 'watertight' guarantees that any American-made Patriot air-defense systems sent to Ukraine would be replaced within about six to eight months. US President Donald Trump last week announced a deal with NATO chief Mark Rutte for European alliance members to buy US weaponry -- particularly Patriot systems -- for Kyiv to help it in its war against Russia. The move marked a pivot for Trump as his patience has worn thin with Russia's President Vladimir Putin for frustrating efforts to halt the war in Ukraine. Germany has offered to finance two of the Patriot systems, while several other NATO allies have expressed willingness to pay for three more. But concern has grown as Washington wants European allies to first send Patriot systems from their own stocks to Ukraine and then wait for replacements from the United States. Pistorius told Der Spiegel it was important that 'the countries transferring systems can continue to meet their NATO requirements and that no security gaps arise for NATO'. Countries including Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands had declared their willingness to finance Patriot systems, but Pistorius said that 'no decision has been made as to which country could supply Patriot systems to Ukraine'. Speaking later at a Berlin news conference, he said talks were ongoing on the question of 'which countries in Europe and beyond currently have Patriots, and in what quantities are they willing to hand them over?' He added: 'There is money for these Patriots. Now we just need the Patriots.' Germany formerly had 12 Patriot systems but has sent three to Ukraine and two to Poland. Another Patriot battery is dedicated to training, leaving Germany with six active units.
