The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra has stolen the Nürburgring Nordschleife production electric vehicle lap record from the Rimac Nevera after lapping the circuit in a time of 7:04.957 — 0.341 seconds faster than its Croatian rival. The feat also bests the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT by 2.593 seconds.
Unveiled in October last year as Xiaomi's flagship offering, the SU7 Ultra is equipped with a trio of electric motors offering a combined output of 1,123kW and a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 1.98 seconds. The Chinese super saloon's top speed is pegged at 350km/h.
Other go-faster tweaks include a full set of sticky Pirelli P Zero tyres, high-performance carbon ceramic brakes sourced from AP Racing, Bilstein Evo T1 dampers and a specially developed aero kit that generates up to 285kg of downforce. Compared with the standard SU7, the SU7 Ultra is also a fair chunk lighter thanks to the liberal use of carbon fibre.
Retailing for 529,900 yuan (R1,313,523), the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra is a performance bargain and an impressive achievement for a firm that made a name for itself making smartphones.

Chinese EV and smartphone maker Xiaomi on Thursday priced its new electric YU7 SUV from 253,500 yuan (R631,565), almost 4% below Tesla's Model Y, stepping up the challenge to the US firm in the world's largest car market. The YU7's base model costs 10,000 yuan (R24,913) less than the starting price of Tesla's Model Y in China, with the more premium models YU7 Pro and YU7 Max priced at 279,900 yuan (R697,334) and 329,900 yuan (R822,061) respectively. Xiaomi started taking orders for all three models on Thursday night, with orders hitting 200,000 three minutes after the sale started. The Model Y, China's best-selling SUV in May, starts at 263,500 yuan (R656,602) in China. Xiaomi said it will partner with BYD, GAC Toyota and Zhengzhou Nissan to build an ecosystem connecting humans, homes and cars. Xiaomi's CEO and founder Lei Jun has said he wants the YU7 to challenge the Model Y and analysts said it has the potential to succeed. Other rivals include Zeekr's 7X and Li Auto's L6. "The YU7 will serve as an early test of whether Xiaomi can broaden its appeal beyond early adopters and tech enthusiasts to become a serious player in the mass market EV segment," said Rosalie Chen, senior analyst at Third Bridge. The YU7 has a driving range of up to 835km per charge, compared with up to 719km for the redesigned Model Y launched in January. The YU7 is Xiaomi's second car since the Beijing-based firm entered the auto sector last year with its sporty electric SU7 sedan, which drew styling cues from Porsche and was priced below Tesla's Model 3. Since December, the SU7 has outsold Tesla's Model 3 in China on a monthly basis. The SU7's success expedites the company's EV bid despite intense competition in China's auto market. In March, Xiaomi raised its target for EV deliveries this year to 350,000 from earlier guidance of 300,000. The company has secured land in Beijing close to its existing car factory for 635-million yuan (R1.57bn), which it plans to use for a smart connected car and components project. Lei said in June he expected Xiaomi's auto business to become profitable in the second half of the year.

The ridiculously fast Porsche Taycan Turbo GT has just gone and added the Yas Marina Circuit to the growing list of global racetracks where it is officially the fastest production battery electric vehicle. The record lap time of two minutes 7.247 seconds was set using the current 5.2km F1 GP World Championship circuit in Abu Dhabi. Strict regulations A new official lap record format from the Emirates Motorsport Organisation (EMSO) dictates that cars undergo strict scrutineering prior to track activity. This is done to ensure the cars are being run standard production car trim and specification. On track activity is then limited to a 60-minute practice session, followed by a 45-minute qualifying session. It's during this qualifying session that the lap record time must be set. Eye-popping oomph Using the expertise Porsche has developed from its championship-winning 99X Electric race car that competes in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, the Taycan Turbo GT is able to bring that technology to the street as the most powerful production Porsche ever. The car offers 580kW of power for normal use. But this number jumps up to a full 760kW with launch control activated. An optional Weissach package is available for the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. What this means for the man in the street is that there are no rear seats. There is also more carbon fibre and this in turn offers a better power-to-weight ratio. The Weissach package saves 75kg while a fixed rear wing provides extra downforce. Porsche Taycan Turbo GT race-ready The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT comes standard with lightweight ceramic brakes based on the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake. The car is also equipped with the Dynamics Package that includes the Porsche Active Ride suspension with GT-specific tuning. The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT is said to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 2.2 seconds. And reach a top speed of 305km/h. If only The Citizen Motoring could get our hands on one, this Porsche just might be able to topple Mercedes-AMG's GT 63 S E Performance Coupe from the top of our sprint table too.
