Sixers' Trendon Watford explains where his versatility comes from

USA Today21 hours ago
CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers brought in Trendon Watford on a 2-year $5.3 million deal to begin free agency in an effort to add more versatility and ball-handling to a roster that needs it. There is a lot that Watford can bring to the roster and the Sixers will look to unlock everything he can bring to the table.
Standing at 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot-2 wingspan, Watford is an underrated passer as he averaged 2.6 assists in the 2024-25 season and had an assist percentage of 21.1% per Cleaning the Glass. He has the ability to play on the perimeter and make things happen on the offensive end while also playing inside and being able to provide an athletic component at the big man spots.
One has to wonder where Watford found all of this versatility. It's hard to play multiple positions in the NBA, but it helped that he was put in the right position to develop that aspect of his game.
"Just playing different positions since I got in the league," Watford started. "I came in as probably a small-ball 5 with Portland and sort of transitioned to playing backup point guard the last two years and point forward the last two years so just being comfortable with the ball and being comfortable playing off great players."
Playing with the Trail Blazers was a big help for Watford as he was in a rebuilding situation which led to a lot of experimentation on the floor in terms of roles. He will be able to play plenty of different positions on the floor for the Sixers as he played bigger with the Blazers and then played a more perimeter role while with the Brooklyn Nets.
While he was able to play off Damian Lillard during his time in Portland, Watford will be looking to play off Joel Embiid, Paul George, and close friend Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia.
"Coming from Portland playing with Dame, playing with a great point guard like that, I never had the chance to play with an MVP-caliber big man," Watford finished. "So I'm looking forward to that."
One can certainly expect Watford to play a number of different roles in Philadelphia. Especially, when considering how coach Nick Nurse loves to use players in different roles so this is a great situation for him. Now, he just needs to perform on the floor to help the Sixers bounce back from a miserable 24-58 season.

Ajay Mitchell could soon graduate from Summer League after dominating Grizzlies

Dancing with Phlandrous Fleming Jr., Ajay Mitchell spun around the Memphis defender and tripped him over his feet. He then bodied through Lawson Lovering's vertical contest for the fancy finish around the basket. The 23-year-old was in rhythm. After all, Summer League must've felt like small potatoes compared to the NBA Finals. Mitchell finished with 24 points on 10-of-18 shooting, six assists and one rebound. He shot 1-of-3 from3 and went 3-of-3 on free throws. He also had a steal. The Oklahoma City Thunder dropped a 92-80 Summer League loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. But as most know, the results of these games don't matter. Instead, the NBA champion has to feel good about how Mitchell looked. Carrying the baton from Jalen Williams a couple of summers ago, Mitchell looked too good to be on the floor. He resembled his MVP teammate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with constant drives to the basket. He had no problem muscling his way through traffic or throwing up a soft floater that went in. Fresh off a contract extension, Mitchell had 16 points in the first half. He was OKC's sole source of offense. He continued that in the second half. Everything looked too easy for the second-year player. This is the type of domination you wanted to see from the most NBA-ready player on your Summer League roster. Let's see how many more Summer League games Mitchell has left, but this was an awesome start. Viewers tuned in for Nikola Topic's debut but left impressed with Mitchell. Those two could battle it out for the backup point guard minutes next season. "Just trying to stay in rhythm. I think there are a lot of things we can do better as a team. I can do better, too," Mitchell said. "Just got to look forward to the next one."

Analyzing Adem Bona's performance after summer Sixers fall to Jazz

Adem Bona was an interior force tonight for the 76ers in Summer League16 PTS | 8 REB | 8/11 FGQuick first step and did a great job angling for positioning. Shined in his matchup vs Filipowski The Philadelphia 76ers fell to the Utah Jazz to begin summer league play on Saturday, 93-89. The standout for the Sixers was rookie VJ Edgecombe who impressed with 28 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks as he stuffed the stat sheet in his summer league debut. However, Adem Bona deserves the spotlight a bit. The second-year big man out of UCLA had 16 points, eight rebounds, and a block and had some big moments against Jazz big man Kyle Filipowski. As he continues throughout the summer league, the Sixers will be looking for more of this. Now's the time to look at the good and the bad from Bona's performance against the Jazz: The good His energy and soft touch around the basket was what stood out on Saturday. Bona is like a pogo stick at times and he skied for a big putback on the offensive end while showing off some dribble moves. He flashed some potential as a driver with the basketball in his rookie season, but there was one play, in particular, on Saturday when he jab stepped, took Filipowski baseline, and threw down a slam over his fellow second-year counterpart. Another thing that stands out about Bona is he plays within himself. He knows what he can do and doesn't try to do too much. His ability to finish around the basket and be able to keep the scoreboard moving is a helpful trait. He shot 8-for-11 from the floor against the Jazz and made winning plays all night. The bad Bona had moments during his rookie season when he struggled with fouls and that continued in this contest. One is allowed 10 fouls in the summer league before fouling out and Bona got dangerously close to fouling out as he finished with eight. Some of it was just tough luck as he looks to make the big play on the defensive end to help his team, but a few of them were just silly fouls. If Bona wants to keep a rotation spot in the league, he will have to watch his fouling and give the Sixers a player they can rely on to stay on the floor in that respect.

Jazz rookie Ace Bailey nears double figures in summer league debut

Ace Bailey neared a double-double in his debut in the Salt Lake City Summer League, helping the Utah Jazz post a 93-89 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday. Bailey finished with eight points, seven rebounds, one assist, one steal and one blocked shot in nearly 25 minutes of action at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. He earned the start in the contest, going 3 of 13 from the field, including 1 of 5 from 3-point range. The fifth overall pick struggled to make shots, though he flashed his potential as a rebounder, with several coming over a crowd. He also had a highlight-worthy block after making an acrobatic effort to swat an attempt away by Mark Armstrong. After orchestrating a precarious predraft process, Bailey said at his introductory press conference on June 29 that he was eager to play basketball once again. He had that opportunity on Saturday after taking part in several practices ahead of summer league. The Jazz have reportedly been impressed by Bailey in workouts and meetings since joining the team, according to ESPN. They have put Bailey and the rest of the team through rigorous workouts over the past week and have been pleased with the results from those sessions. Bailey and the Jazz return to action on Tuesday for their second of three matchups in Utah. After that stretch, they will play at least five games in the NBA Summer League, beginning Friday in Las Vegas, Nevada.
