REVIEW: Why I wish I'd tried seafood from Ocean Basket sooner

Known for its signature seafood dishes, warm and inviting atmosphere - this restaurant has become a go-to destination for sea food lovers.
I had the pleasure of dining at Ocean Basket with a friend, courtesy of a R1000 voucher from them.
Upon arriving, we were welcomed warmly by their friendly staff before being allocated a waiter.
We were then assigned to a waitress who was such a breath of fresh air. She was kind, knowledgeable, and incredibly confident in her role - which, let me tell you, is exactly what you want as a customer. Since my friend was unfamiliar with the menu and conflicted about what to order, our waitress quickly stepped in to help. She offered a variety of seafood dishes that she thought might interest us, making the decision process so much easier.
We each ordered the platter for one option, which allowed us to indulge in a variety of seafood delights.
The platter for one option includes a selection of their popular seafood delights such as their select 100g fish, 6 prince prawns, 3 mussels, calamari 165g and calamari heads. This is served with half chips and half rice - which I always find brilliant.
And honestly, if you've been to Ocean Basket before you'll know their seafood is to die for.

Freshness: The fish (hake) was incredibly fresh, and the mussels were cooked to perfection, they were three but very huge and we ordered some extra - the garlicky creamy sauce they always serve the mussels with always snaps and it pairs well with the prawns too.
Calamari: I tried the fried calamari for the first time ever at Ocean Basket, and it was amazing! A great twist on the classic grilled option. The crispy exterior and tender interior were perfectly balanced, and their portion is always generous when it comes to calamari.
Oysters: Although I only had one as we ordered the option of just 2 to avoid getting overwhelmed, the oysters were fresh and eatable, my friend really enjoyed them as it was the first having them and showed interest in getting them the next time dining at Ocean Basket. For those who are new to oysters, I recommend pairing them with tabasco sauce, lemon, and salt to balance out the flavour and trust me on this, I'm not a diehard fan of them but this trick always does it for me. However, the oysters were expertly prepared, and the flavour was rich and briny.
Rice and fries: The rice was cooked to perfection, and the fries were very crispy and flavourful. The option to have both on the platter will always be a great touch, allowing us to customise our meal to our liking.
Prawns: Their prawns are always the highlight of the meal, they're not too big and not too small as well, they are just perfect prince prawns. These were succulent and flavourful with the lemon butter sauce, the basting of the sauce was done perfectly - no complaints.
Service: The service was top-notch, with friendly and attentive staff. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and made excellent recommendations, ensuring that we had a seamless dining experience.

We enjoyed our meal with a glass of wine, which complemented the seafood perfectly and it added a rich and velvety texture to the meal, and the combination was absolute perfection.
In addition, while Ocean Basket excels at its signature seafood dishes, the menu could benefit from some variety, such as lobster/crabs, crayfish, caviar, and abalone just to give it that boost and excitement for seafood lovers, but their focus on quality over quantity is evident in their dishes.
If you're looking to try out new culinary experiences - look no further than experiencing high-quality seafood with Ocean Basket, not just for the freshness and flavours that will leave you wanting more, but for your diet too.
I highly recommend incorporating seafood into your diet due to its numerous health benefits and versatility, seafood is the source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and essential nutrients which can contribute to a number of health benefits.
Overall, despite some limitations in the menu, my experience was really enjoyable, I loved everything about the exceptional service, delicious food and welcoming atmosphere. If you're a seafood lover, Ocean Basket is definitely worth a visit and their prices are very reasonable and realistic, and did you know if you go there on Mondays and order any adult meal you get a free meal for your little one? How cool and considerate is that? So why settle for ordinary when you can have extraordinary with Ocean Basket? I give everything a solid 10/10 I had no complaints with anything and would definitely dine with them every now and then.

How SA youth are rising with Anglo American Zimele

From the quiet streets of Limpopo, Rustenburg, and the Northern Cape to the dazzling coastlines of the Caribbean and Europe, a powerful new story is unfolding. It is one of transformation, mobility, and second chances. Dozens of unemployed youth from disadvantaged backgrounds are being trained in international hospitality and placed into life-changing work opportunities aboard luxury cruise ships. And they're not just travelling; they're thriving. 'This is a great milestone for the programme and youth development in our host communities,' says Larisha Naidoo, Head of Anglo American Zimele. 'Youth unemployment remains one of the major challenges that South Africa is facing, and this partnership is one of the ways we are contributing to reducing unemployment and poverty through impactful skilling.' The programme combines hospitality training, personal development, and international placement to provide young people with the tools, mindset, and opportunity to succeed beyond borders. From no opportunities to global experiences For many participants, this is their first formal job, their first flight, and their first time leaving South Africa. But more than anything, it's their first real encounter with dignity and possibility. 'This is not just about employment. It's about reclaiming identity,' shares one of the programme leads. 'These young people left behind communities where poverty had swallowed hope. Now, they're earning international salaries, learning new cultures, and believing in themselves in ways that once felt out of reach.' Some have used their income to build homes. Others are supporting entire households. Many are saving to start businesses of their own. The financial impact is real, but the personal growth is where the magic lives. 'I never thought I'd make it out' Behind every uniform and passport stamp is a story. A young woman who once dropped out of school due to finances is now working in Europe and supporting her siblings. A young man who had never seen the ocean is now docking in cities across the Mediterranean, learning languages, and sending money home to his grandmother. 'I never thought I'd make it out,' says one participant stationed in Italy. 'I used to wake up every day wondering if life would ever change. Now, I wake up in a new country with a sense of purpose and pride I've never felt before.' 'Coming from Kutullo Village in Steelpoort, Limpopo, I never imagined I'd be travelling across the world,'says Monica Madere, one of the programme beneficiaries. 'This opportunity didn't just change my location — it changed my mindset. I believe I can build a future now.' They speak about the discipline they've developed, the friendships they've formed across cultures, and the way this experience has redefined what they believe is possible. Beyond jobs: Building personal brands and future leaders The transformation doesn't stop at sea. As part of the programme's reintegration phase, returned beneficiaries are being supported through personal branding and career development workshops, ensuring their global experience becomes a launchpad for greater opportunities. Masterclasses have begun across provinces, starting with Limpopo, where returned seafarers are now learning to articulate their stories, update their CVs, and position themselves for long-term career growth. They are no longer just 'former cruise workers.' They are global citizens, future business owners, community role models, and storytellers of resilience. A model for youth empowerment done right As Youth Month comes to a close, this initiative offers more than inspiration. It presents a b lueprint for measurable impact. It proves what happens when intentional investment meets real opportunity. Back home, families are hopeful. Communities are inspired. And a generation that once felt forgotten is finally being seen, supported, and celebrated. This isn't just youth development. This is nation-building. Because when we dare to believe in the potential of our young people, they show us exactly what they're capable of and the world, quite literally, becomes their stage.
