French police investigating series of crypto kidnappings with executives tied up and their fingers cut off

Sky News14-05-2025
Authorities in France are investigating a series of kidnappings linked to the world of cryptocurrencies.
The most recent incident saw a businessman's daughter violently ambushed in the street in Paris.
It took place on Rue Pache in the French capital's 11th arrondissement on Tuesday morning.
Captured on video and shared widely online, three masked men appear from a parked van and begin wrestling a woman to the ground.
After failing to snatch her amid the struggle, they retreat to the van and drive off.
According to reports, the target's father is the co-founder of French cryptocurrency exchange platform Paymium. She is believed to be 34 and was with her partner at the time.
Prosecutors have not confirmed the victim's identity but have launched an investigation led by the organised crime unit of the Paris police force.
Authorities are now looking into whether the recent string of incidents are linked.
On Wednesday, French interior minister Bruno Retailleau promised to meet figures from across the crypto sector to make them aware of the current risks and promote measures they can take to protect themselves.
Company owner also targeted in Paris
Tuesday's incident comes after another on 29 April, which saw a crypto marketing firm owner kidnapped and held to ransom for more than two days before being found with his finger cut off.
At around 10.30am on 29 April, the 60-year-old, who co-owned his business in Malta with his son, was kidnapped by four men in ski masks as he walked down a street in Paris's 14th arrondissement.
After they forced him into a van, he was eventually discovered two days later during a raid of a property in Essonne, 12 miles south of Paris.
While he was being held, his attackers demanded a ransom of between £4m and £6m but failed to extort any money, newspaper Le Parisien reported.
Five suspects, aged between 20 and 27, were arrested at the scene of the raid, which took place around 9pm. They remain under investigation
Essonne's state prosecutor said in a statement: "The victim appears to be the father of a man who made his fortune in cryptocurrencies, with the crime involving a ransom demand."
Co-founder and his wife abducted from home
On 21 January, David Balland, the co-founder of crypto firm Ledger, and his wife were abducted from their home in Mereau, central France.
The attack happened in the early hours of the morning, with suspects separating the couple immediately and taking Balland to a house in the nearby town of Chateauroux, where they also cut one of his fingers off.
Police were alerted to the kidnapping by Mr Balland's business partner who had received a video of his severed finger with a demand for a €10m cryptocurrency payment.
Detectives traced and freed him, finding his wife tied up in the boot of a vehicle in a car park in Essonne the following day.
Nine people were arrested and are still under investigation.
Crypto influencer's father kidnapped
In December last year, the father of another French cryptocurrency influencer was targeted at his home in eastern France alongside his wife and daughter.
Their attackers tied them up and forced the 56-year-old man into a car, driving him away before demanding a ransom from his son, who lives in Dubai.
The son contacted police and his mother and sister were quickly freed.
His father was found tied up in the boot of a car in Normandy, showing signs of having suffered physical violence and been sprayed with petrol.

He was the 'perfect' co-worker but 'life of the party' architect with a sexy nickname stands accused of dark secret

Drinking a beer and cracking jokes with colleagues, he seemed like any co-worker enjoying a night out after a busy day in a Manhattan office. But once he left the bar and headed back to his Massapequa Park, Long Island home the architect Rex Heuermann allegedly went Jekyll and Hyde and prowled his neighborhood looking for his next victim to kill as his wife and children slept. Katherine Shepherd worked with Heuermann in the same midtown Manhattan office at 525 Seventh Avenue in New York City 's Fashion District during the early 2000s. She was working for an architectural design firm and his company was providing city permits. On occasion, she and her co-workers would gather at Pete's Tavern in Gramercy Park. She remembered Heuermann acting like the life of the party which later earned him the nickname 'Sexy Rexy' amongst colleagues. 'He was fun. He was funny,' Shepherd told Daily Mail. 'He would tell funny stories and jokes that made everyone laugh.' During working hours, she said he was always professional towards her and the other female employees. 'If he ever made me feel uncomfortable, touched me in any way or would've made any inappropriate sex jokes there was no way I would have worked with him,' she said. 'Never ever did he ever make me feel uncomfortable,' she added. However, she said he liked pretty girls in the office and using them to help get what he wanted professionally. 'He knew how to get permits and was renowned for it. He knew all the people and had all the relationships,' she said. 'He had women in the office that were petite and beautiful and he would send them down to the city to get those permits.' Heuermann was arrested two years ago in July 2023 and initially charged with the murders of three women: Amber Costello, Melissa Barthelemy and Megan Waterman. Since then, he has been charged with the murders of four more victims: Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Sandra Costilla, Jessica Taylor and Valerie Mack. All the victims were working as sex workers when they vanished after going to meet a client. Their bodies were found dumped along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach and other remote spots on Long Island. Some of the victims had been bound, others had been dismembered and their remains discarded in multiple locations. The 61-year-old has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him. Shepherd said: 'It's just hard to come to grips that this is the same person. It just doesn't match. It doesn't match. 'Though I know in my heart he did it. The evidence is overwhelming. 'He was able to separate his life - somehow put a divider in-between murderous spawn of Satan to a caring father and business owner. I don't know how but he was able too.' She recalled the first time she met him and said she was stunned by his 6ft 4ins size - a client of one of his alleged victims has described him as resembling an 'ogre'. 'He's one of the biggest men you'll ever meet in your life. It is very intimidating having someone that large,' Shepherd said. 'He joked around a lot and made you feel comfortable because he knew he was big and intimidating. I think he was trying not to be intimidating,' she added. However she said he was 'soft spoken' and described him as coming off as 'arrogant and cocky'. She said: 'He was very smart. He was very confident.' Shepherd remembered how kind he was to her when she injured herself on black ice on a city street and took her to the emergency room when the pain became too much to bear. That day in the hospital, she said he waited for her for hours as she took tests, including an MRI. Once discharged, they went by cab to her apartment in Hell's Kitchen and after he got her settled, he went to the pharmacy to pick up her painkiller prescription. She remembered he made her a slice of toast when he returned before leaving her by herself. 'I was grateful for his help. I felt like he was almost taking care of me like a dad would,' Shepherd said. The day that happened was November 17, 2003, four months earlier one of Heuermann's alleged victims 20-year-old Jessica Taylor's body was found decapitated with her hands cuts off in a wooded area in Manorville, Long Island. 'He (allegedly) cut her head and hands off, spread them around Long Island and four months later took me to the hospital because I was in pain and needed help,' she said. When Shepherd learned Heuermann had been arrested for murder and was not the 'normal, everyday, nerdy guy', she thought he was but a cold blooded killer she was stunned. 'I have a totally different view of this guy because like I said, he took care of me. He helped me. He took time out of his day, his job to take me to the hospital to take care of me. I saw that as, "Wow what a good co-worker realizing that I needed help stopping his day to help me. No one else did,"' she said. In 2005, she started consulting on her own and working with Heuermann directly. She said, they'd meet at job sites and one time, the avid hunter and gun aficionado, taught her how to shoot a gun while they were at a job site in the Bronx. She said she didn't plan on it but went for it. 'It was a 9mm - the kind you see in movies all the time - the black square gangster gun,' she explained. 'Anyway that is what I fired. He was telling me where to put my hand because when you shoot the whole top part goes back and if you put your hand in the wrong spot you can hurt yourself'. On some days they'd travel in the same vehicle to a job. She said their conversations were always focused on business and that he would never talk about his wife or kids. However, she did meet them once when she went to his home to do some measuring for a home renovation project he was planning. She was horrified to later learn that she took measurements in the same area that held a secret room where he would allegedly torture his victims. She recalled her final communication with him was in summer 2011 while she was working in California. She sent an email to Heuermann for some permit expediting work she needed done. She said she jokingly called him 'Rexy' like 'Sexy Rexy' - the playful term that she and her colleagues sometimes used. It was also the time when some of the bodies were being discovered along Ocean Parkway in Suffolk County's GIlgo Beach. She said that he never responded. This month marked two years since Heuermann's arrest and the interior designer still grapples with the idea that her kind-hearted co-worker who became her knight in shining armor when she was in distress, is the accused Gilgo Beach serial killer and charged with the brutal murders of seven women. 'I didn't even know about the Gilgo Beach Killer until two years ago. It feels like someone is playing a trick on me. It feels like you are talking about someone else.' 'I am a little bit in denial, still. The practical side of me understands what happened but I just don't get it. It is really hard to comprehend. 'I didn't know he was capable of that. How is anyone capable of that? He has kids. How do you have kids and a wife and go off and do something like that,' she added. After all this time, Shepherd said her time with Heuermann still haunts her but she concluded: 'It is good to talk about it. Every time I talk about it - it is like a little therapy and it helps me.'

Friends of mom ‘killer' Sarah Patrick Grace defend teen's tear-soaked funeral speech that ‘tipped cops off to her crime'

THE teen TikToker accused of murdering her mom and stepdad is reportedly extremely scared in jail as family and friends defend the emotional funeral speech that resulted in police charging her. Sarah Grace Patrick, 17, is the main suspect following the deaths of Kristin and James Brock. 5 5 5 The couple was shot dead as they slept in Carrollton, west of Atlanta, on February 20, 2025, and their bodies were tragically discovered by Patrick's six-year-old sister. The teen has been charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the deaths. She posted videos and messages on social media, appearing to be distraught over their deaths. One of Patrick's TikTok posts reads, "They don't know it, but a year from now me and my 5-year-old sister would find them wrongfully shot dead in our home – and they won't get to watch me graduate high school, see me walk down the aisle, or even say goodbye. (sic)" She captioned the video, "I miss you guys, save a seat for me in heaven." Patrick also gave a heartfelt speech at their funeral that police felt was suspicious. The 17-year-old told mourners, "I'm sorry" at the end of the eulogy, a moment which has raised eyebrows. Patrick has now emerged as the prime suspect in the case, with Carroll County sheriffs claiming they have "mountains of evidence" against the teen. She reportedly learned police had a warrant for her arrest and went into the station with her father, who is supporting her. Family friend Carrie Jensen, who has known Patrick for years, is raising money for her legal fees. A public Facebook group with the name " I stand with Sarah Grace Patrick" also now has more than 300 members. Carrie told The U.S. Sun this week, "She has a lot of people who are standing up for her. She's extremely scared and maintaining her innocence. "I have known Sarah and her family since she was in Middle School. She and my daughter are best friends. "She was with us 4th of July weekend." Jensen also wrote on Facebook, "Sarah Grace did not just 'turn herself in' she was notified that she had warrants for her arrest and did exactly what she was told to do. "Her father walked his daughter into that police station not knowing what lied ahead for his child. "She never confessed to anything. She was working with the detectives to find the people who murdered her mom and stepdad. She trusted them because that is who she is! "Her apology at the funeral service was normal she would apologize over everything. Even if it wasn't her fault. 'She is very much just a child. No matter what! 'No one knows her background, her story or what she has gone through." Carrie claims she recently drove more than an hour but was told her visitation had been taken away, along with her phone privileges. She added, "This is unfair and unjust!" Dad Doniel Patrick's full statement on daughter's arrest "I just want to go on the record and say I know everybody is talking. "Many people were talking about things that they don't even know. They are just talking and writing about stuff that is completely false. "Taking pictures of me leaving church to go to visit my daughter. If you have time to follow me around walk up to me talk to me I will talk to you. "My daughter is 100% innocent. If you wanna talk to anybody about me and my daughter's relationship come straight to me. I'm not hiding. "I'm going to work and doing all the normal things that I have to do to support my son. Nobody knows my pain, but I choose to deal with it the way that I have to. "I don't want all of attention like everybody else. February 21 I had to come home and tell my son that his mother and his stepfather were dead. "It was the hardest thing I ever had to do. Until I had to take my daughter to the sheriff's office, I did not turn her in. "She voluntarily went there because of the warrants.. She has nothing to hide. I'm not the type of person that gets on social media. "I don't even pay attention to most of it. The only social media I have is Facebook and it's been ruined by this entire situation. "People are quick to judge when they don't even have any info. I have as much info as everybody else so where are you getting your info from? "If it's the media then you all should know how the media portrays everything. It's not about the truth. It's about viewership they will say anything. "Some of the stuff that I have seen and some of the media outlets have reported good stuff. "A lot of of them have reported bad stuff without any facts just assumptions and talking to people that don't know nothing. "My heart goes out to the Brock family and Kristin's. I will speak when it's time. Right now, I am trying to focus on my daughter, my children. "Not what everybody else is focusing on believe me I'm living it. I don't have to see it. To everybody out there that has kids to everybody out there that's paying attention. "God bless each and everyone of you. I hope that you never have to go through an experience like this.. as Pastor Ben said this Sunday I'm ready bring it on goliath." Source: Facebook After setting up a GoFundMe account to raise funds for Patrick's legal fight, the page is no longer live. Jensen explained, "A new donation link will be posted soon. I am working with a lawyer friend of mine to make sure we follow all the rules and it not be taken down." Patrick's father, Doniel, took to Facebook to defend his daughter after she made national headlines. "Many people were talking about things that they don't even know," the dad fumed. "They are just talking and writing about stuff that is completely false." Doniel went on to claim that Patrick is "100% innocent" and encouraged any doubters to speak about the incident with him in person. Court documents seen by give an insight into Patrick's troubled childhood, which suggests her mom and stepdad were often taking drugs. Her dad filed for divorce from his wife, Kristin, in 2018 after a 10-year marriage, and he demanded joint legal custody of Patrick and her brother, Donnie, with "primary physical custody of the parties' minor child" and that any visits between his estranged wife and the children be supervised due to her alleged addiction issues. "The mother has unrehabilitated substance abuse issues and both she and her boyfriend fail to adequately provide a suitable drug-free environment for minor children," court docs read. They eventually agreed on joint legal custody, with primary physical custody given to Kristin, and Doniel seeing them on alternate weekends and holidays. Previously, the Brocks' loved ones offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. "This is so horrendous," Kristin's father Dennis Nolan told Atlanta News First back at the time. "You just can't imagine that someone would come in and just take the life of two good people." The deceased couple were popular in their local church community. Catalyst Church member Tasha Meza told Fox 5 Atlanta: "Kristin was bubbly and fun and she loved hugs. "She never met a stranger. And James, he was a comical kind of guy. He would always crack jokes and make you laugh." Patrick turned herself in earlier in July after police issued the warrant for her arrest following a months-long investigation. She is expected to be tried as an adult on the murder charges. The case is still an open investigation, and more arrests and charges are still possible, officials have said. Authorities are still searching for a motive for the murders.
