‘Therapy played a massive part in my return to music'

Capaldi performed a 35-minute surprise set on the Pyramid stage earlier this month, two years after being unable to finish his set on the same stage when he struggled to manage the symptoms of his Tourette syndrome.
He announced a break from touring shortly after his 2023 performance at the Somerset festival.
During a conversation with one of his best friends, released to mark the singer's new partnership with BetterHelp online therapy platform, the Scottish musician opened up about both of his Glastonbury performances and how therapy played a part in returning to his career.
Of the 2023 performance, Capaldi said it was 'literally the worst moment' of his life.
He said: 'It was a big, big, big old gig.
'Second song in I was probably just like 'this has to like… I can't keep doing this to myself and other people as well'.
'People were coming to gigs, and I was like 'that's not how you want to watch a show'.
'As far as I was concerned, I was like, 'I'm done indefinitely'.'
The 28-year-old, best known for songs Someone You Loved and Before You Go, said he felt anxious because he 'wasn't living in the moment at all' and was 'catastrophising'.
Capaldi said: 'Therapy has been such a massive part of my last two years, a massive part of the reason that I'm able to be a musician again.
'In partnership with BetterHelp and sort of to reflect my experience of therapy and the importance I feel it has in my life and other people's lives, we're giving away 734,000 free hours of therapy.'
He added: 'The importance of that number is that it's 1,000 hours for every single day that I have, well, since I last played on stage and I feel like, if I can be a part of sharing that with other people, why not?'
Asked how he had reached a point where he felt better, the Grammy-nominated artist said he had previously been 'lying' to a therapist and 'telling them what I thought they wanted to hear'.
Of therapy, he said: 'I really struggle with it, it's not fun.
'I don't have a fun time there.
'I feel amazing after, it's like going to the gym, I think, which obviously I'm well versed in.'
He continued: 'Sometimes it can be really difficult, but I think I do it because I realise how important is for me to continue to feel good, because I've felt the best I felt in a long time through therapy, I would say that has been the cornerstone of like, why I feel how good I feel now.
'I think that's a big thing that I've noticed or found, is that different therapists work for different people.
'So I think it's all about giving the time to therapy as well, also not expecting that quick fix and I'm someone who likes instant gratification and sort of the quickest thing and all the rest of it, so I think coming to terms with that was a big thing.'
'I think I'll always be an anxious person,' he added.
'I think accepting that that's always going to be there for me is a big thing.
'It's about how I respond to anxiety and how I respond to a lot of stuff in my life.
'It's how I, I don't like this phrase, but 'show up for myself'.
'I have neglected to look after myself in the past, both mentally and physically, and I have made promises to myself that I haven't kept.
'I think for me, it's accepting that I'm always going to have this stuff there, it's about how I sort of respond, what steps I take to sort of remain at like base level.'
On his preparations for Glastonbury this year, Capaldi said he had performed 'secret gigs' that were 'warm-up shows' in Scotland to 'ease in'.
At his first warm-up show in Edinburgh, Capaldi said he felt a 'rush of adrenaline' before managing to calm himself.
'Before I did the last song, I was just explaining to everybody who was there how grateful I was that they had shown up and come along and I think I didn't realise how much I actually missed being on stage and then I just started to cry,' he said.
During the 2025 Glastonbury show, Capaldi performed his new track Survive, which has since gone to number one on the singles chart.

Lewis Capaldi gives fans a health update and says he's feeling 'the best he's felt in a long time' as Scotsman opens up on 'the worst moment of his life' at Glastonbury in 2023

Lewis Capaldi has revealed he's no longer on antidepressants and is feeling the 'best he's felt in a long time' in a new health update. The adored Scotsman, 28, made his return to music almost two weeks ago with an epic and emotional performance at Glastonbury. It came almost exactly two years after he broke down on the very same stage, prompting a hiatus during which Lewis was forced to focus on improving both his physical and mental health. But after taking some time away from the limelight and the 'pressures' of being a star, Lewis says that he's now 'doing much better' and is no longer taking the antidepressant Sertraline. 'I'm not on antidepressants anymore,' he told fans on a livestream. 'It was f*****g hard to get off it. You could say I survived getting off Sertraline but let's not get into that. 'This is happy stuff, I'm trying to share less.' He later added: 'I've felt the best I've felt in a long time through therapy. 'I think I will always be an anxious person, accepting that's always going to be there for me is a big thing. It's about how I respond to anxiety.' Lewis, who marked his return with the new track Survive which has soared to Number 1, also opened up about the 2023 set at Glastonbury, calling the performance 'the worst moment of my life'. He candidly admitted: 'I think I probably knew two songs into the set at Glastonbury that I couldn't do it. 'I was on stage and I was on complete autopilot. In my head I was feeling a thousand miles away and I watched it back and I feel sad. As far as I was concerned, I was done indefinitely. 'I didn't need to break to focus on getting better, I took a break because I needed a break to release the pressure valve a little bit. 'I was achieving my dream. If there was a film, I've got to the end and I've done it. But it's not how I thought it would be. 'The thing that I wanted to do most made me feel the worst. Watching it, I just see someone who is completely not there and having the worst moment of his life'. The singer too spoke about therapy, and how difficult he finds motivating himself to attend sessions. In an attempt to help supporters, Capaldi has teamed up with BetterHelp to offer 734 hours of free therapy to fans. The number marks the amount of days he spent away from the music industry. He said: 'I was lying my way through therapy before. I was telling them what I thought they wanted to hear or things I'd read online so I could get out of there as quickly as possible. 'I struggle most weeks to get myself up and go to therapy - even to go to open my laptop and talk to the therapist can be really difficult.' Lewis's new tune Survive, which candidly details his struggles over the past two years, shifted a whopping 68,500 units in its first week, beating competition from the likes of Sabrina Carpenter to Number 1. It also marked the singer's biggest first week ever in another landmark achievement. Gushing about the support he's received since his highly-anticipated comeback last week, Lewis said: 'Survive is this week's UK Number 1, and I want to say a massive thank you to everybody who's been streaming it, downloading it - it really means the world. 'I've been away for a little while and to come back to this outpouring of love and support has been absolutely incredible. 'I can't thank everybody enough for all the kind words since Glastonbury - and now this! 'It's been the best week of my life. I hope you continue to enjoy the song, it means a lot to me.' On the day of the track's release, Lewis took to the stage at Glastonbury, emotionally telling supporters: 'Two years ago I wasn't sure if I'd ever do this again, but I'm back baby!' He sang a number of his famous hits, before once chocking back tears as he performed Survive for the first time in front of scores of supporters. Fans in the crowd could be seen crying and calling out his name before joining him in a rendition of mega-hit Someone You Loved. In his heart-warming speech, Lewis said: 'Glastonbury it's good to be back. Won't say too much up here today as if I do I might start crying, but I can't thank you enough for coming here and being with here'. 'Second times a charm hey! It's a short set today but just wanted to come and finish what I couldn't last time, also this was like the worst kept f*****g secret ever'. Amid the success of the performance and that of his tear-inducing new single, the Scotsman announced a new tour this week consisting of 10 dates. The Someone You Love singer will play venues in Sheffield, Aberdeen, Birmingham, Nottingham and two days at the 02 later this year. Lewis confirmed on Instagram that these would be his 'only shows' in the UK, Ireland and Europe this year.
