'Jab Zaroorat Padegi, Ghar Se...': When Rishabh Pant Stunned Ex-India Star After Ranji Trophy Snub
During his Under-19 days, an uber-confident Rishabh Pant didn't take his non-selection in Delhi's Ranji Trophy squad to the heart.
Delhi had a stormy build-up to their Ranji Trophy 2015-16 campaign. Before the season got underway, Ajay Jadeja quit as their head coach and claimed that 'players are being used to settle scores" in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA).
Jadeja oversaw just a few days of training sessions before stepping away. A certain Rishabh Pant would go on to make his first-class debut midway through the season after being initially snubbed from the squad.
Jadeja recalls how he tried convincing the Pant to attend Delhi's training session after he wasn't picked in the Ranji Trophy squad. However, the then 18-year-old wicketkeeper-batter turned down the idea and confidently proclaimed that if needed, the team management will call him.
'I will never forget our first meeting," Jadeja recalled on Sony Sports. 'I was the coach of Delhi for a few days before quitting (in 2015). The selectors and captain kept arguing over the players they wanted to have in the team. Pant wasn't picked. I still told him (Pant) to attend the practice session for the Ranji Trophy, telling him that it doesn't matter that you've not been selected, there will be a chance in future."
'He (Pant) replied, ' B haiya rehne do na, jab zaroorat padegi, ghar se bulayenge' (Let it be. When they need me, they will call me from home)."
Rishabh Pant's FC Record For Delhi
Pant was eventually called up for Delhi's fourth match of the season and made his FC debut against Bengal in drawn game at home. He scored 28 off 46 in the first innings and 57 off 71 in the second dig.
Overall, he has played 18 first-class matches for Delhi and scored 1413 runs at an average of 54.34. He has four centuries and as many half-centuries to his name.
In this second Ranji Trophy season, Pant blasted a famous triple-century – 308 against Maharashtra at the Wankhede Stadium at the age of 19.

'Let's Do It For The Country': Rishabh Pant Bids Goodbye As England Tour Ends
Last Updated: Rishabh Pant, India's vice-captain, batted with a fractured toe to help India put on a respectable score in the first innings of the Manchester Test. India's Test vice-captain Rishabh Pant has said that it was a basic gesture from his side to come out and bat with a fractured toe because he would do whatever it takes to make India win or put them forward in the game, adding that the team should now strive to draw the series for the country. Pant was on Sunday, July 27, ruled out of the fifth and final Test against England after sustaining a fracture to his right foot on the opening day of the fourth game in Manchester. Tamil Nadu's N Jagadeesan has been named as his replacement and it is expected that Dhruv Jurel will officially play at the Kia Oval, after having acted as a substitute for Pant in the third and fourth Tests. 'Just a gesture from my side, whatever it takes to make our team win or put the team forward instead of thinking about the personal goals, that was all for me. It's been amazing the way they have backed me," Pant said while speaking to the BCCI. In the video, he was also seen throwing his gloves to the fans in the stands. The Indian Test vice-captain retired hurt on 37 on Day 1 of the Test in Manchester and went for X-rays after taking a blow to his right foot while attempting a reverse sweep off England pacer Chris Woakes. 'It's very difficult to even put in the feeling that he would be going through in words because he has fractured his toe and he is in pain no matter what. I even saw his foot; it was swollen badly," Washington Sundar said on the video. 'So for him to even walk around actually takes a lot, but he did a lot more than that. The whole country is proud of him and he is just the son of the country, I would say," Sundar added. Pant returned to bat after the fall of Shardul Thakur's wicket with India at 314/6 and went on to score an audacious half-century. 'The only message I am going to give my team is, let's win it, guys. Let's do it for the country," Pant signed off. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 10:14 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. From Ranji Star To Test Squad: N Jagadeesan Gets Maiden India Call-Up For Oval Clash
In a major development ahead of the fifth and final Test of the India vs England series at The Oval, Tamil Nadu's Narayan Jagadeesan has been drafted into the Indian squad as a replacement for Rishabh Pant, who sustained a foot fracture during the fourth Test at Old Trafford. This marks a maiden Test call-up for Jagadeesan, a consistent performer in the domestic circuit, who now stands on the cusp of a dream debut. Rishabh Pant suffered a painful blow to his right foot while attempting a reverse sweep on Day 1 in Manchester. Though he bravely returned to bat on Day 2, the injury ruled him out of wicketkeeping duties, and eventually the final Test. With Ishan Kishan unavailable due to an ankle issue and KS Bharat playing club cricket in England, the selectors turned to Jagadeesan—perhaps a surprise pick for some, but one thoroughly earned through performance. Jagadeesan's Stellar Domestic Run Jagadeesan's inclusion is not a leap of faith; it's a reward for relentless consistency in red-ball cricket. Over the last two Ranji Trophy seasons, the 29-year-old has scored: 816 runs in 2023–24 at an average of 74.18 674 runs in 2024–25 at 56.16 These figures include two centuries and five half-centuries, reaffirming his ability to convert starts and anchor innings—qualities India will desperately need in a decider at The Oval. With an overall first-class average of 47.50, including 10 hundreds and 14 fifties across 52 matches, Jagadeesan is no flash in the pan. He holds a career-best score of 321 vs Chandigarh in January 2024, and has been part of the BCCI's Centre of Excellence player pool, despite missing the recent India A tour of England. A Versatile Wicketkeeper-Batter in Form While his primary role is that of a wicketkeeper, Jagadeesan's adaptability with the bat makes him a valuable asset. He can bat anywhere in the top or middle order and has shown temperament against both pace and spin. His recent form spans across formats. Earlier this month, he smashed 81 off 41 balls for Chepauk Super Gillies in the Tamil Nadu Premier League, demonstrating his sharp reflexes and form. This versatility could prove vital, especially if KL Rahul or Dhruv Jurel are called to play dual roles in the XI. Why Not KS Bharat? The decision to choose Jagadeesan over Bharat—who has experience keeping in English conditions—raises eyebrows, but the logic is clear. Bharat's recent returns have been modest, while Jagadeesan's run-hunger and reliability under pressure make him a more exciting bet. The selectors also appear to be aligning with head coach Gautam Gambhir's broader philosophy of rewarding domestic consistency and backing in-form players over reputations. A Debut Years in the Making Jagadeesan has long been on the fringe, waiting patiently for a crack at the highest level. Having debuted for Tamil Nadu in 2016, his journey has included stints in the IPL with Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, and a record-shattering 277 in List A cricket in 2022—the highest score in the format globally. That innings also made him the first man to score five consecutive centuries in List A cricket, etching his name alongside the likes of Sangakkara and Devdutt Padikkal.

Gambhir honours Rishabh Pant's braveheart knock with fractured foot, reveals ‘he put his hand up': ‘Not many people…'
Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir was all praise for Rishabh Pant for his courageous effort with the bat in Manchester despite his fractured foot. Pant sustained an injury on Day 1 and left the pitch in agonising pain. However, he returned to the middle to rescue India on the second day and completed his half-century, adding crucial runs to India's total and instilling a fighting mindset in the team. Gautam Gambhir lavished massive praise on Rishabh Pant.(AP) Pant was prepared to bat on Day 5 despite his injury, as India battled to save the match. However, contributions from his teammates meant he didn't have to return to the crease. Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar struck centuries, while KL Rahul chipped in with a crucial 90 to stabilise the innings. Gambhir hailed Rishabh Pant's brave effort as a defining moment for the current Indian team, saying the wicketkeeper-batter's courage would lay the foundation and character for the squad going forward. "Rishabh already, it's been declared that he's out of the series. And one thing I want to say is that the character and the foundation of this team will be built on what Rishabh did for the team and for the country as well," said Gambhir in the post-match media interaction. 'Not many people have done that in the past' The Indian head coach said that what Pant did for the team batting with a fractured foot is not something many players have done. "Any amount of praise is not enough for him, especially batting with a broken foot. Not many people have done that in the past. And he had put his hand up, and that is why I say any amount of praise... "I can sit here and talk about this for hours and hours. I think the generations to come forward will talk about this. And generations coming forward should talk about it, that there is someone who has batted with a broken foot. And it's unfortunate because of the kind of form he was in," he added. Gambhir expressed hope for Rishabh Pant's swift recovery, emphasising the wicketkeeper-batter's crucial role in India's red-ball setup. He underlined Pant's value not just for his explosive batting but also for the balance he brings to the Test side. "But again, he's an important member of the Test side. And I hope he recovers quickly and comes back quickly and try and deliver a game for us," said the Team India coach.
