One per cent population to be imparted civil defence training in Himachal

Shimla, July 2 (PTI) More than one per cent of the population of Himachal Pradesh, which is about 70,000, would be imparted training in civil defence to aid trained volunteers, battling disasters year after year, Director, Disaster Management, D C Rana said on Wednesday.
Himachal is encountering natural calamities every year and suffering huge losses and these civil defence volunteers would be helpful during the disaster as many times rescue agencies like national and state disaster response force and other agencies take time in reaching the affected people and area.
To ensure that the relief and restoration operations are started without any loss of time, the Revenue Department has trained 28,000 volunteers in 3600 panchayats, officials said, adding that these volunteers have also been given three days' training in research and rescue.
In addition, 1500 'Disaster Friends' have been deployed after imparting 15 days' training and the government would also deploy 5,000 more 'Disaster Friends' after training in relief, rescue and searching for the missing persons.
So far, in the past 13 days during the ongoing monsoon season, 34 people have died in rain-related incidents including cloudburst, flash floods and landslides, while 40 are still missing. PTI BPL MNK MNK

New Delhi: The Delhi University will begin the next phase of its undergraduate admissions process 'in the coming week' by allowing candidates to fill in their preferences for courses and colleges, with the results for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG) being announced on Friday. The academic session is scheduled to commence on August 1. Offering 79 undergraduate courses across 69 colleges, Delhi University has made available 71,624 seats this year. An advisory issued by the university said, 'The University of Delhi will open Phase II of the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS-UG) in the coming week.' Its duration could be limited to a week, the university said and advised students to stay updated through the official admission portal -- The university has introduced greater flexibility in subject combinations. Many courses now allow either one language and three subjects or two languages and two subjects, and whichever combination yields the best CUET score will be considered. The previous rule requiring at least 30 per cent in the CUET language paper for BSc (Hons) has been removed. A new auto-accept feature has been added this year to ensure that students do not miss out on their allotted seats due to delays in acceptance. According to the university, the CUET system has helped attract more students from small towns and diverse school boards, adding to the inclusivity of the university's student body. The CUET-UG, which is a gateway to undergraduate admissions in the country, saw a record 13.5 lakh applications this year. Amarnath Yatra 2025: 36 pilgrims injured after five buses ram into each other on Ramban highway
At least 36 pilgrims suffered injuries on their way to Amarnath Yatra when five buses collided with each other in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district on Saturday, police said. The accident took place at around 8 am near Chanderkoot, along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, they said. The officials confirmed that the collision took place due to the failure of brakes of one of the buses in the convoy. "The last vehicle of the Pahalgam convoy lost control and hit stranded vehicles at the Chanderkot Langer site, damaging four vehicles and causing minor injuries to 36 Yatris," Ramban Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Alyas Khan said. Ramban SSP Kulbir Singh revealed that saving three or four, all other pilgrims are willing to continue their Amarnath Yatra after first aid. 'The convoy had stopped for breakfast at Chanderkote. Pilgrims suffered minor injuries but majority of them are willing to continue their pilgrimage after first aid. However, three to four may not be able to continue their pilgrimage,' he told reporters. Reacting to the incident, Union minister Jitendra Singh said, 'There is no reason for concern. All arrangements for the pilgrims are in place and are being constantly supervised by the administration.' Khan said the government officials already present at the site rushed the injured to the Ramban district hospital. Several senior police officers visited the hospital to monitor the treatment of the injured and directed the chief medical officer to ensure the best care. "The Yatris were later shifted to other vehicles for their onward journey," the deputy commissioner said. Ramban Medical Superintendent Sudarshan Singh Katoch said the Amarnath pilgrims were discharged immediately after first aid. The convoy left for its destination after the damaged buses were replaced, officials said. The fourth batch of 6,979 pilgrims -- 5,196 men, 1,427 women, 24 children, 331 sadhus and sadhvis, and one transgender -- left the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in two separate convoys between 3.30 am and 4.05 am. While 4,226 pilgrims left in 161 vehicles for Nunwan base camp for the 48-kilometre traditional Pahalgam route, 2,753 pilgrims were headed for the shorter but steeper 14-kilometre Baltal route in 151 vehicles. The Amarnath Yatra 2025, a major annual pilgrimage in Hinduism, attracted both seasoned and first-time yatris. The first batch of pilgrims of Amarnath Yatra have returned on Friday.

Forest advisory panel puts Puri airport project on hold pending wildlife impact study
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) has directed Odisha govt to collaborate with Wildlife Institute of India (WII) for an evaluation of the possible impact of the proposed Shree Jagannath International Airport on local wildlife and the environment. Until the WII study is complete and a detailed explanation with a mitigation plan is furnished by the govt, the FAC, under the Union forest ministry, will keep the project on hold, thus deferring clearance. "The conservation measures and mitigation activities should be integrated into a site-specific wildlife conservation/management plan for the project. This should be approved by the chief wildlife warden before it is submitted to the MoEFCC," the advisory committee decision read. The airport is proposed to be developed over a 471-hectare area at an estimated cost of Rs 5,631 crore. The forest land to be diverted, if clearance is received, spreads over 27.88 hectares. "The govt, with WII's help, has been asked to justify the project, giving reasons that it won't invite climate eventualities," a forest department officer said. The WII's study will focus on migratory bird routes and the possible impact on Olive Ridley turtles and Irrawaddy dolphins close to the airport site at Brahmagiri. The FAC's directive followed concerns raised by the regional office of the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC). The FAC has also asked for a conservation and mitigation plan, requiring approval from the chief wildlife warden. It also highlighted environmental concerns about the planned cutting of 13,000 trees currently serving as a bio-shield and coastal shelter. Speaking about the development, a govt spokesperson said such steps are part of the standard protocol for large-scale infrastructure projects. "The commerce and transport department has already begun preparing the required mitigation measures in line with the FAC's recommendations and will submit the plan to secure stage-I clearance," the spokesperson said.
