The Dallas Mavericks completed what was a near formality on Wednesday night, officially sending the card in and drafting Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft. The move has been assumed for months now after Dallas improbably won the NBA Draft Lottery, and now it is official.

Shortly after the selection was made, Flagg went to speak with the media for the first time as a Maverick. It didn't take long for him to get asked about his head coach, Jason Kidd, who has been rumored to be involved in the New York Knicks' coaching search.
Flagg was asked if he had received assurances that Kidd would be around for his rookie season, but the former Duke star talked about Kidd's potential vision for him instead via Zach Gelb.
'I haven't had those conversations yet at all,' Flagg said. 'I think talking with Coach Kidd in the workout and even after I got picked on the phone for a minute, I think he's just excited. He has a good vision for me and what I can do and how I can impact the game, so I'm just excited to talk to him more.'

It shouldn't be too difficult for Kidd, or whoever else is coaching the Mavericks next season, to help find a role where Flagg can fit in and be one of the most impactful rookies in basketball next season. The one-and-done phenom can do it all on the court on both ends of the floor and should immediately be an impact player in Dallas.
Flagg is one of the best off-ball defenders in this draft, which should make him a lethal partner on that end of the floor with Anthony Davis. Offensively, he can score from all three levels and is a great playmaker capable of making his teammates better while he is on the court.
Flagg will be asked to do some heavy lifting at the start of his career while Kyrie Irving makes it back from an ACL injury, but if his Duke tape is any indication, he is more than capable of carrying the load.

To hardly anyone's surprise, the Dallas Mavericks selected Cooper Flagg with the top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Flagg, 18, became one of the youngest basketball stars taken at No. 1. LeBron James retains the distinction of being the youngest player in league history to be taken with the top overall pick. Flagg described the moment he heard his name called by the NBA commissioner as "a dream come true." While Flagg primarily spent time at the traditional forward position during his lone season at Duke, the team's roster also listed him as a guard. Former Mavericks player and current coach Jason Kidd admitted he takes a more nuanced approach to players' positions. "I don't look at the position," Kidd said during a press conference. We've talked about that. The Tennessee Titans went heavy on the offensive side of the ball during the 2025 NFL draft, adding multiple potential playmakers to the roster. That doesn't mean they ignored the defense. They used two premium picks on that side of the ball and added players who can potentially make an impact in Femi Oladejo and Kevin Winston Jr. Both Oladejo and Winston have a chance to compete for playing time. However, Winston has been limited due to his medical issues as he continues to rehab his knee after suffering an ACL injury early in 2024. That doesn't stop Jacob Infante from naming Winston his choice as the Titans' Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate. Tennessee Titans: Kevin Winston Jr. The Tennessee Titans took just one defender in the first five rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft. Almost by default, Kevin Winston Jr. seems like their top contender for Defensive Rookie of the Year. As a third-round safety, his odds of winning DROY aren't incredibly high. That said, he's a hard-hitting defensive back with a high football IQ. If he gets the right opportunity, he could surprise some people. His selection of Winston appears to be by default, after glossing over the Titans' second-round selection of Oladejo. There is no doubt that Winston could make an impact in 2025 if healthy. He is a complete safety prospect with the traits needed to succeed in the defense, but his biggest question will be his availability as he returns from injury. While Winston could make an impact, Oladejo has a more straightforward path to playing time early in the season. Oladejo may be inexperienced and raw on the edge, but he brings solid athleticism and an infectious attitude to the table, and comes complete with tremendous upside. With Tennessee needing increased production from the position, Oladejo may get an opportunity early on to impress. While it is likely that both players will see significant playing time, the Titans also added a veteran during the offseason at their respective positions, making training camp crucial for both young players to establish themselves.
