Cameron Highlands police arrest man suspected of burying baby born to stepsister
Cameron Highlands police chief Supt Azri Ramli said police received information from the suspect's father, who found the baby's body at 10am.
'The suspect's father saw a patch of soil that had been dug up when he was going to the water tank located behind their house in the hilly location. He then stumbled on a white cloth bundle containing the dead baby and called police,' he said when contacted by Bernama today.
He said the 19-year-old suspect, who works as a cleaner at a homestay, admitted to burying the remains of the two-day-old baby born to his 21-year-old stepsister.
'Following that, police arrested the man at 5.30pm at his home in Kampung Melayu Desa Kayangan yesterday and seized tools such as hoes and shovels used to dig the ground to bury the baby,' he said.
The man has been remanded for four days starting today to assist in investigations under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealing the birth and death of a baby. — Bernama

The accused, who was not named to protect the identity of his stepdaughters and is divorced, pleaded not guilty to three charges in the Alor Gajah sessions court before judge Aiza Khairuddin, Harian Metro reported. On the first two charges, he is accused of committing physical sexual abuse against the girls in their home in Alor Gajah between May 11 and July 5, in a bedroom and a bathroom. He is also accused of exposing his genitals to the children in the kitchen during the same period. The first two offences fall under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum 20-year jail term and whipping upon conviction. The third offence is under Section 15(a)(i) of the same Act for non-physical sexual abuse. If found guilty, he faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to RM20,000, or both. Deputy public prosecutor Ali Hussain proposed bail at RM20,000 for all charges, with one surety, and conditions that the accused report to the nearest police station once a month and avoid contact with the victims and prosecution witnesses. Defence lawyer Anif Rafih asked for bail to be reduced to RM12,000, saying his client earns RM2,000 monthly and has to support his two-year-old biological son, who is under the care of his mother in Pendang, Kedah. 'My client has no objection to the added conditions and promises not to disturb the victims,' he said. The court allowed bail at RM15,000 with one surety and imposed the prosecution's requested conditions. Case mention has been scheduled for Aug 25.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Two foreign men suspected of being the masterminds of an armed robbery and housebreaking gang were killed in a shootout with police at Jalan Semerah Padi, Cheras, early this morning. Bukit Aman criminal investigation department acting director Fadil Marsus said the suspects were studying a target when police confronted them at 3.45am. 'They were travelling in a white Honda Civic, reported as stolen in Subang Jaya in 2023. 'As police attempted to intercept them, a shootout ensued, resulting in both suspects being killed at the scene,' Bernama reported him as saying at the location. Fadil said police found various housebreaking tools, drugs, a revolver, and a semi-automatic pistol in the vehicle. Investigations found that the two men were allegedly involved in 50 cases of housebreaking and armed robbery as well as drug-related activities dating back to 2022, resulting in losses of more than RM3 million. Fadil said the gang is believed to be active in several states, including Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, and Perak. The group has around 15 members, and police are tracking down the remaining individuals, he said.
