Borneo Flora Festival 2025 kicks off with strong crowd, student support

LABUAN: About 100 Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students are gaining hands-on experience as volunteers at the five-day Borneo Flora Festival (BFF) 2025, which began on Saturday. First-year student Muhd Alif Hazim, 21, from the university's main campus, said he travelled to Labuan specifically to volunteer at the inaugural festival. 'This is the biggest event I've joined this year. I wanted to improve my communication skills and meet new people,' said the Computer Science (Data Science) student. He said the Borneo Tropical Flora and the Borneo Rainforest Jewel exhibitions drew strong interest from visitors on the first day, particularly for showcasing various floral species, including tulips, sunflowers, pohon pontianak and orchids. Siti Aisyah Masyop, 23, a student from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics, said this was her first volunteer experience and an opportunity to gain new knowledge and interact with the public. The Selangor-born student said their tasks included giving directions and assisting visitors with taking photographs. 'Visitors have been friendly and we always ask if they need any help. With the large crowd, some may be unsure of where to go,' she said. Third-year student Anne Roza Robin, 22, from the Faculty of International Finance, said she had been involved in the festival since its initial flower-planting phase. Hailing from Keningau, she described the experience as meaningful, especially in preparing herself for the working world. 'There was a huge turnout on the first day of BFF. Despite the hot weather, we remained committed to assisting visitors,' she said. Museums Evolving Into Hubs For Learning, Social Engagement
BALING, July 29 (Bernama) -- Evolving with the times, the role of museums has gone beyond storing and displaying artefacts to becoming centres for learning and social engagement, said Deputy Minister of National Unity, K. Saraswathy. She said the museum within the community concept emphasises active public involvement in various aspects of museum management and activities. 'Through this approach, the community is not merely visitors but also strategic partners in the research, preservation, conservation and development of exhibition content and museum activities,' she said at the opening of the Kembara Ilmu Jom Gi Baling community outreach in conjunction with the national-level International Museum Day Festival at Dusun Tok Wak, near here, today. Also present were Department of Museums Malaysia director-general Datuk Kamarul Baharin A Kassim, Kedah Museum director Suhaidi Syukri and Baling district officer Yazlan Sunardie Che Yahaya. Saraswathy said museums serve as a collaborative platform between institutions and the community, adding that initiatives such as the Kembara Ilmu Jom Gi Baling are laudable efforts to foster a sense of ownership among the public. "History, heritage, and culture are powerful tools in shaping national identity and strengthening unity among the multiracial Malaysian society. 'Through this community-based museum concept, public involvement in safeguarding cultural heritage can be strengthened…where they feel that their heritage, culture and history are valued and protected,' she said, stressing that intergenerational knowledge exchange can also be fostered, providing communities with the space to voice their views in the development of museum programmes and activities. 'The community-based museum approach not only strengthens the relationship between cultural institutions and the public but also helps preserve the identity of communities often sidelined from the mainstream,' she said, emphasising that the concept reflects the transformation of museums into more inclusive entities that foster greater awareness of identity and history among the people. The Kembara Ilmu Jom Gi Baling programme was organised by the Ministry of National Unity through the Department of Museums Malaysia, in collaboration with the Kedah Museum Board, featuring various activities including visits to Gua Sireh, Baling Negotiation Gallery, distribution of food baskets to the Kensiu Orang Asli community in Ulu Legong and asnaf individuals from the Siong sub-district.

KL Local Plan 2040 To Balance Development And Heritage Preservation, Says Mayor
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- The Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040 (PTKL 2040) aims to strike a balance between physical development and the preservation of the city's cultural heritage, said Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif. She said City Hall (DBKL) is working closely with the Department of National Heritage to ensure a dedicated framework is in place to safeguard heritage buildings across the capital. 'When we say the city is for everyone, that includes heritage development. We've included heritage trail routes in the plan, highlighting areas that have been identified as part of Kuala Lumpur's cultural footprint. 'We are continuing efforts to identify and incorporate more of these heritage trails into the plan,' she said in an interview with Bernama Radio today. Maimunah added that the plan also identifies several heritage villages that will be preserved and gazetted as protected zones, in line with efforts to retain Kuala Lumpur's historical and cultural character. 'If a site is gazetted as heritage, it will remain so. It cannot be altered. This ensures better oversight for all developers operating in Kuala Lumpur,' she said. She added that PTKL 2040 adopts a balanced approach to development, incorporating key elements such as economic growth, physical planning, environmental sustainability, heritage preservation, creativity, mental well-being and safety. In a related development, Maimunah said DBKL has applied to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) in March, with confirmation of receipt issued in April. The application is currently under review by UNESCO, with a decision expected in October.

SMK Sungai Baging Named First MADANI Adopted School By MMEA
KUANTAN, July 29 (Bernama) -- Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sungai Baging here, has become the first MADANI Adopted School of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) aimed at instilling leadership and patriotism among students. MMEA director-general, Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah, said the programme is not just about corporate social responsibility (CSR), but a long-term effort to build character, discipline, and identity in young people. 'SMK Sungai Baging was chosen because of our close collaboration since 2018. The school is also the first to establish the Maritime Cadet Corps, which started in January 2020. Currently, there are 310 cadets,' he said.
