2025 Arizona Cardinals training camp roster preview: CB Will Johnson
The Arizona Cardinals report to training camp on July 22 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team.
Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2024, questions they face and their roster outlook.
Next up is cornerback Will Johnson.
Will Johnson background, 2024 season
Considered a first-round talent, Johnson slid to the second round (47th overall) because of a toe injury that limited him to six games at Michigan last season and a previous knee injury that apparently scared some teams off after remnants showed up during his Combine physical that questioned his long-term prospects.
In his final two seasons with the Wolverines, Johnson had six interceptions, three of which he returned for touchdowns.
Will Johnson 2025 contract details, cap hit
Johnson is one of 30 NFL second-round picks that remained unsigned as of July 10. When he does sign, the total value will likely land around $9 million with at least the first two years of salaries guaranteed and a portion of the third-year salary.
2025 questions, roster outlook
Crucial for Johnson's immediate prospects is not missing too much of training camp if the logjam of unsigned players around the league continues. On talent alone, and if healthy, Johnson should compete for significant time on the field even with the competition there will be from Star Thomas V, Max Melton and stalwart Garrett Williams.

$4M Cowboy earns 1st-place votes, 'best guard in football' praise in ESPN iOL rankings
When the Dallas Cowboys drafted Tyler Smith out of Tulsa, they had grand intentions. The plan was that he would play next to future Hall of Famer Tyron Smith, then take over as the left tackle of the future. Of course, front office plans aren't always viable once things start flying, and Smith has settled in at left guard in the Cowboys' offensive line. Settled in doesn't quite do justice to what has transpired, as the 2022 first-round pick has become one of the NFL's top interior protectors, recently making the top-10 list composed by NFL executives at the behest of ESPN. Not only did he rise from Honorable Mention (following his All-Pro 2023 campaign), he landed at No. 2 overall and as the top guard in the entire exercise. Smith even garnered multiple first-place votes, along with a ton of high praise. Highest ranking: 1 | Lowest ranking: UnrankedAge: 24 | Last year's ranking: Honorable mention Replacing Martin in Dallas is a tough task, but Smith has the ability to do just that. The buzz surrounding Smith popped in the voting. He wasn't on every top 10 ballot, but most of the votes he did get were for first or second place. "Most physically gifted guard in the league who could legitimately be a top starter at LT if they wanted to play him there," an NFL general manager said. "Strong, athletic, nasty, and cut his holding penalties in half last year." Smith edged out Indianapolis Colts veteran Quenton Nelson for the honor of best guard, and finished one spot below Kansas City Chiefs center Creed Humphrey. "Best guard in football," an NFL defensive line coach said. "Perennial Pro Bowl guy. Quick explosive, violent, strong hands, above-average pass pro, can reach second level." Smith is scheduled to play for $2.5 million in 2025, with a cap hit of $4.2 million. The team invoked his fifth-year option, so he's also under their control for 2026 for $21.2 million, but with the way he's regarded around the league, Dallas is going to need to pony up for a big, long-term contract in the near future. Former Ohio State defensive lineman Cam Heyward lands on NFL Top 100 list
.@CamHeyward lands at #️⃣8️⃣3️⃣ on the #NFLTop100📝: It's that time of year again when we get a look at the annual NFL "Top 100" list. This ranking is unique in the fact that the voting comes from the players themselves, so that likely means a little more knowing what your colleagues who play football at the highest level think of you. One guy that makes the list almost every year is former Ohio State and current Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Cam Heyward. This year, he checks in at No. 83, and boy, has he had staying power. The 2025-26 season will be Heyward's 14th season after being selected by the Steelers in the first round of the 2011 NFL draft. He's had a distinguished and probably underrated career if we're being honest. He's been named a First-Team All-Pro four times, made the Pro Bowl seven times, and was voted the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2023. Before heading to the NFL, Heyward made a name for himself in Columbus by becoming a First-Team All-Big Ten selection in 2010. will continue to unveil the Top 100 players for this year, and we'll continue to keep track of when former Ohio State football players are unveiled. Browns WR Jerry Jeudy lands at No. 82 in NFL Top 100
The NFL has begun unveiling its annual Top 100 players list, as voted on by the players, and the latest installment featured Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jerry Jeudy at No. 82. Jeudy was acquired by the Browns last March in a trade with Denver and signed a three-year extension with the team shortly after, which has him tied to the team through the 2027 season. During his first season in Cleveland, Jeudy had a breakout campaign, setting career-highs in catches (90) and yards (1,229), and earned the first Pro Bowl selection of his career. New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston was featured in the NFL's segment on Jeudy and had high praise for his former teammate: 'His ability to stop on a dime and come back to the football and make guys miss was so impressive.' While Jeudy will be catching passes from a new signal-caller this upcoming season, he'll have an opportunity to build on his impressive first season with the team.
