Rishabh Pant Back To Keeping Wickets, Anshul Kamboj Bats And Bowls Before 4th Test
Akash Deep, nursing a groin injury, did not bowl in India's training session ahead of the fourth Test. Rishabh Pant appeared fit to play.
Soon after gently rolling his arm over in the field of play, Akash Deep cut a forlorn figure as uncapped Anshul Kamboj and Prasidh Krishna bowled at full tilt during India's first outdoor training session ahead of the fourth Test.
Akash Deep, nursing a groin injury since the Lord's Test, did not receive the green light from the team physio to bowl in the nets after undergoing a fitness evaluation in the middle under the watchful eyes of coach Morne Morkel.
Minutes later, he stood as a spectator during the net session alongside Arshdeep Singh, who has been ruled out of the game due to a hand injury.
If Akash Deep is also deemed unfit, the team management will need to choose between Prasidh Krishna or Anshul Kamboj for the third pacer's slot alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
Kamboj, who joined the team over the weekend as cover for the injured Arshdeep, was added to the main squad on Monday, raising the possibility of a surprise debut.
The pacer from Haryana bowled for close to an hour in the nets with high intensity alongside Siraj, Bumrah, Prasidh, and Shardul Thakur.
Kamboj also padded up for a brief batting session alongside Thakur, who could directly replace injured all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Siraj bowled with the highest intensity against the likes of Shubman Gill, K L Rahul, and Rishabh Pant, while Bumrah moved to the field of play for more bowling after finding the practice surface slippery.
Rishabh Pant bats and keeps pain-free
All eyes were also on Rishabh Pant, who had not kept wickets at Lord's after injuring his fingers on the opening day of the second Test. While batting on day five, Pant grimaced every time he defended against a seriously quick Jofra Archer.
Considering he performed keeping drills and batted pain-free for an hour, Pant appears fit enough to start the fourth Test. Pant is always up for some banter, even with his teammates, as was evident when he shared the nets with skipper Shubman Gill.
There was no apparent discomfort while batting against Mohammed Siraj, Kamboj, and Krishna.
There is also speculation over Karun Nair's slot in the playing eleven, but he batted with plenty of purpose. Sai Sudharsan, who could replace Nair in the playing eleven, was also seen taking catching practice in the slip cordon.
With Nitish Reddy on his way back to India, Yashasvi Jaiswal was back doing catching drills in the slip cordon.

Permutation and combination test for India
MANCHESTER: Unlike Sunday, it was a bright and sunny morning here at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground on Monday. The surface, which had been under cover due to rain, probably saw the sunlight for the first time in many days. Despite it being a cheerful day with a lot of happenings on the field, India pacer Akash Deep looked seemingly lost in his thoughts. He was leaning on a roller with padded-up Abhimanyu Easwaran and Dhruv Jurel to his company even as other India pacers were whizzing past him to bowl in the nets at the Trafford Cricket Centre. Be it Jasprit Bumrah or Mohammed Siraj or Shardul Thakur or Prasidh Krishna or new addition to the squad Anshul Kamboj, everybody was going full throttle. The pacers were also seen chatting with Akash Deep while waiting for their turn to bowl but the Bengal bowler's mind seemed to be somewhere else. Earlier, he bowled quite a few balls on the surface adjacent to the main square with coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and a few others in attendance. Starting with zero run up, he gradually increased it to gain the momentum and pace. But that was it once the team members shifted to adjoining practice nets. Akash Deep, who reportedly has a groin injury casting a doubt on his appearance, was just a spectator even as his teammates toiled. As was reported on Sunday, the BCCI on Monday morning clarified that Andhra all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has been ruled out of the series with a knee injury and Arshdeep Singh too was out of contention for the next match due to impact injury on his bowling thumb but the Indian cricket board didn't give any update on Akash Deep. However, it was evidently clear from the net session that the 28-year-old is unlikely to be a part of the game. His absence coupled with injuries to Reddy and Arshdeep forced the visitors to fly in Kamboj to join the squad. The Haryana seamer not only bowled for almost an hour but also batted alongside Thakur for more than 30 minutes giving indication that he might be in line to make his India debut. Kamboj has played 24 first class matches claiming 79 wickets so far. He was also part of India A team which played two matches against England Lions before the five-match series started. The 24-year-old right-arm bowler picked up five wickets and scored an unbeaten 51 in the second game in Northampton.

6 Indian badminton players out of World University Games over administrative lapse
The Indian badminton squad that won the mixed team bronze medal at the ongoing World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany has been hit by a controversy over selection after six of the 12 chosen players were barred from participating due to an alleged administrative players were selected and sent to represent India, but only six were allowed to compete as officials failed to submit all names correctly during the managers' meeting on July 16."This is not just mismanagement – it's career sabotage. We demand answers, accountability, and that our voices be heard. We didn't lose a match – we lost our right to even participate," wrote Alisha Khan, one of the players left out, on Instagram."This isn't just a mistake. It's career sabotage by AIU and our team officials. We demand justice."According to sources, BV Rao and Ajit Mohan were the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) officials who attended the meeting. The AIU, which is the nodal body for university-level sports in the country, acknowledged the incident."We have been informed about this and the matter is being investigated," AIU Secretary Dr Pankaj Mittal told PTI while refusing to comment any to a source, the issue was not just an error but stemmed from "systematic irregularities" starting from the selection trials held at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar."During the managers' meeting, officials were given a letter listing all 12 players from India. It was their responsibility to read it carefully, check for missing or injured players, and confirm or adjust the names accordingly. However, they took it lightly," the source said."The names of players who hadn't attended trials were there. They came here only to enjoy. In the meeting, they also made a basic mistake. They were supposed to declare which player would play singles, doubles, and mixed, but didn't process it properly."Saneeth Dayanand, Sathish Kumar Karunakaran, Devika Sihag, Tasnim Mir, Varshini Viswanath Sri, and Vaishnavi Khadkekar were the six who competed in the mixed team defeated Macau but lost to Hong Kong in the group stage, then beat the USA in the round of 16 and Malaysia in the quarterfinals before losing to Chinese Taipei in the Kumar, Darshan Pujari, Aditi Bhatt, Abhinash Mohanty, Viraj Kuvale, and Alisha Khan were part of the 12-member squad but did not get to has written to the Badminton Association of India (BAI), demanding a thorough investigation.'This level of mismanagement has caused significant emotional distress to the affected athletes. The players who were left out of the nomination list have been unfairly denied the chance to contribute on the field and be acknowledged as part of this achievement,' he wrote in his email.'To date, there has been no accountability or concrete explanation provided by the managers. A mere apology cannot suffice at this level of international representation, where the careers, dreams, and morale of athletes are at stake.'Through this email, I respectfully urge the concerned authorities to take this matter seriously, conduct a thorough review, and ensure that such avoidable and damaging incidents are never repeated in the future.'Expressing frustration over the incident and apathy of the Indian officials, a player said, "It's a historic achievement that our team won a bronze with just six players, but that certificate and medal will change their lives, not ours, when we were supposed to be there as a team.'The frustrating thing is the officials don't even admit their mistakes or show any remorse," he said on condition of anonymity.'The AIU can at least issue certificates acknowledging all 12 as team members to protect our career prospects and rights.'The selection trials were held in April at KIIT, Bhubaneswar, with over 210 players, including top-tier national and international university athletes, the source alleged that the players who actually topped the trials were left out of the mixed team event despite being part of the squad.'The team manager made the blunder. The officials didn't focus during the meeting, and after the trials they didn't follow the proper process. They just submitted six names, so the other six were not allowed by FISU,' the source said.'...the team travelled all the way, and yet in the manager's meeting they missed out names. I don't know how it is possible to overlook such a basic responsibility.'Players have been misled throughout... officials are giving them false hopes about participation and medals in individual events. If the players are robbed of their chance like this, it is unacceptable.'A player also alleged that officials goofed up on the team jerseys which "didn't carry the country's name properly", leading to fine.- EndsMust Watch advertisement

Im Not In Same League As Him: Harry Brook Heaps Massive Praise On Joe Root Ahead Of 4th Test Against India
Ahead of the fourth Test against India, England batter Harry Brook has hailed his veteran teammate Joe Root and believes the latter deserved to be crowned the No.1 Test batter. Notably, Root recently climbed atop the ICC Men's Test Batting Rankings following a century during England's thrilling win in the Lord's Test against India. "Everybody wants to be number one, don't they? Him (Root), probably more than anybody else," Brook said in the pre-match press conference. "He's a phenomenal player, I'm not in the same league as him. I'll happily let him have it. He's played for 12-13 years. In my opinion, he is the best Test batter of all time. So, I'll let him have that," he added. England's white-ball skipper also recalled the moment when he first climbed atop the Men's Test Batting Rankings during England's tour of New Zealand last year. "He did (speak to me about it) the first time, when we were in New Zealand. He gave me a handshake. And then he took it off me, three days later," Brook said on a lighter note. Notably, both Brook and Root have contributed with the bat during England's ongoing five-Test series against India. While Brook has 314 runs to his name in the series, Root has scored 253 from the three Tests, each of them boasting a century each. The hosts are currently 2-1 up in the five-match series but Brook believes England will err on the side of caution, given India's bouncebackability. "Obviously, we're in a strong position. We're happy with the way the games have gone so far. They've been tense, they've been good to watch. We're looking forward to this week. Another different challenge, depending on the surface. But yeah, India are a very strong side," said Brook. "They can bounce back at any stage. We saw that after we beat them in Headingley, they came back and had excellent form at Edgbaston. We're going to go out there and do our thing," he added. The fourth Test between England and India will begin from July 23 at Old Trafford, Manchester.
