Firefighters rescue dozens from burning high rise in Santiago
SANTIAGO, Chile: Firefighters rescued dozens of people from a mixed commercial and residential high rise in Chile's capital Thursday, plucking some from windows and balconies with ladder trucks and others from the roof by helicopter after a fire started in the building's basement. People waved shirts and other garments from the upper floors calling for help as a large plume of smoke rose into the sky. At least 15 fire companies responded, working quickly to successfully evacuate more than 100 people from the the building without loss of life. Some 40 people were treated on site, said Claudio Pavez, a coronel with Chile's national police force. The building was located near the Plaza the Armas, one of the most bustling central area's of Santiago. Juan Pablo Slako, a deputy commander with the firefighters, said that there were no fatalities and no serious injuries with most suffering smoke inhalation or shock. 'We don't have fire in the apartments, so we ask for calm,' said Álvaro Lara, vice superintendent of the firefighters, who added that the fire was controled.

At least 15 trapped after tunnel collapses in Los Angeles: Fire department
As many as 15 workers were trapped in an industrial tunnel collapse in Los Angeles' Wilmington area, the city's fire department said late on Wednesday. No injuries have been confirmed, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). The collapse happened about six miles (10 km) south of the tunnel's only access, LAFD said, adding that more than 100 responders were assigned to the incident. 'The City of Los Angeles has mobilized resources to the tunnel collapse in Wilmington,' Mayor Karen Bass said in a post on X.

A fire at a telecom company in Cairo injures 14 and temporarily disrupts service
A fire engulfed the main telecom company building in downtown Cairo on Monday, injuring at least 14 people and prompting a temporary outage of internet and mobile phone services, officials said. The 14 injured people were taken to nearby hospitals, the Health Ministry said in a statement. A witness told news broadcaster Cairo 24 that two emergency responders suffered burns on their hands. The fire started on the seventh floor of a landmark 10-story Telecom Egypt building in the Ramses area of Cairo, the governor's office said in a statement. Ambulances and firetrucks were on site as plumes of dark smoke rose in downtown Cairo. Firefighters put up ladders as firetrucks spewed water to contain the blaze, while security officials cordoned off the area. The fire broke out in an equipment room of Telecom Egypt and led to a temporary disruption of telecom services, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority said in a statement. Telecom services were expected to be restored within hours, the authority said. Online payment services were also disrupted. The fire took place a few kilometers from where a deadly blaze at a train station in 2019 killed at least 25 people and injured at least 45 others after a collision caused a huge explosion.
