This heartbreaking drama is an underrated Netflix movie to watch this weekend (July 25-27)

Every time I open Netflix, I feel a mild sensation of both excitement and dread. There's plenty of stuff to check out, but I actually have to pick something in order to get started. This weekend, I've pulled together three movies that are all great whether you've seen them once or hundreds of times.
They're also movies that, for one reason or another, are underrated at the moment. Give them a look.

Friday Night Lights (2004)
One of the great football movies ever made, Friday Night Lights tells the story of a small Texas town where high school football is the only thing that matters. When the star tailback hurts himself and is out for the season, all hope of the team making it to the state championship seems lost.
The team's coach must then push his kids and the town to remember how important it is to believe in themselves. As cheesy as that might sound, Billy Bob Thornton knows how to turn the material into something genuinely revelatory. There's a reason a whole show was based on the story at the center of this film.
You can watch Friday Night Lights on Netflix.
His Three Daughters (2024)
A genuinely heartbreaking movie, His Three Daughters follows three sisters as they navigate the death of the father they all shared. Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen all delivered textured performances here, and part of the point of the movie is that their dad meant very different things to each of them.
His Three Daughters is a movie about how easy it is to judge the people in your life and how hard it is to navigate difficult periods together without driving one another insane. Crucially, each actor receives plenty of breathing room.
You can watch His Three Daughters on Netflix.
Instant Family (2018)
Family comedy has largely been relegated to Netflix, but Instant Family is a reminder of how great this genre can be. The film stars Rose Byrne and Mark Wahlberg as a couple who decide to foster children after agreeing to start a family.
When they find themselves fostering three siblings, including a rebellious 15-year-old, they begin to realize how chaotic and complicated fostering children really is and how much they still have to learn. Byrne and Wahlberg are excellent and remarkably game. Instant Family is surprisingly sweet without losing any of its laughs.
You can watch Instant Family on Netflix.

Billy Joel Says Wife Alexis Was 'Unimpressed with the Whole Billy Joel Thing' When They First Met — Which 'Impressed' Him

The legendary musician talks about meeting his wife for the first time in the new HBO documentary 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes' Billy Joel brought out all the stops for his wife Alexis the first time they met — but she wasn't exactly impressed by a private concert. Joel, 76, reflects on the first time he met Alexis, 43, in the new HBO documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes, and recalls that her nonchalance toward his skills drew him to her. 'When you meet someone who captures your imagination, it renews, it revitalizes,' he says in the film. 'I remember the first time I met Alexis, we went to my house, and I wanted to play the piano for her. It's a form of communication for me.' The 'Just the Way You Are' singer says he drew on a famous scene from the Marilyn Monroe film The Seven-Year Itch, in which the character trying to woo Monroe's character plays a song by the Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. 'I'm playing that and she's completely unimpressed with it, totally. She couldn't care less what I'm playing and I'm thinking, 'Oh OK, this isn't working,'' Joel says. 'She was very unimpressed with the whole Billy Joel thing, which impressed me. Because I thought, 'OK, maybe she's just here because she likes me, not the Billy Joel guy.'' Joel says he was initially uncertain as to whether he wanted to start a new relationship, as he was fresh off a divorce from his third wife, Katie Lee, and was wary. Still, the star explains that 'something popped,' and he knew he was open to love once more. Alexis — whom he went on to marry in 2015 and welcome daughters Della, 9, and Remy, 7 — also appears in the documentary, and says that the couple got to know each other better after that first meeting through phone calls and emails. She also praises his skills in the kitchen, saying Joel would often cook dinner for her to come home to while she was working in finance. 'We had a couple years together before we had kids and he had completely stopped doing shows,' she says. 'We traveled everywhere. We did a motorcycle trip from Maine down to Long Island, we were on boats 24/7. We were in Europe. We had so much fun.' Alexis has been a pillar of strength for the star in recent months as he deals with a treatable brain condition called normal pressure hydrocephalus (The rocker tells PEOPLE in this week's issue that he's 'OK' and not 'deathly ill'). Dennis Arfa, the star's longtime booking agent, tells PEOPLE he's 'so happy' to see Joel 'raising his children and being so in love with them and Alexis and his family.' 'It's quite rewarding,' Arfa says. 'I'm always rooting for Billy's happiness and his success. I've seen Billy have a lot of happy times through his life, [but] he's had to deal with certain adversity. I'm happy for him in this chapter, and I'm looking forward to the next chapter with him.' Joel himself adds that he's 'really enjoying this time in my life.' Billy Joel: And So It Goes (now streaming on HBO Max) is a rare, revelatory glimpse into the private world of one of rock music's most enduring acts, and how he overcame substance abuse, mental health struggles, and more to find peace. ‘Avatar: Fire & Ash' Trailer Leaks Online: James Cameron Returns With Fiery Stunner

The action-packed first trailer for James Cameron's next Avatar fantasy epic has leaked online — and the footage looks spectacular. Disney is rolling out the trailer for Avatar: Fire & Ash 'exclusively' in theaters in front of Fantastic Four: First Steps. And just like with Christopher Nolan's 'only in theaters' trailer for The Odyssey early this month, grainy unauthorized copies have begun to circulate. But give some credit to Disney here — the Fire & Ash trailer is, at least, a bit tougher to find than the trailer Nolan's Universal film was, with copies being taken down as fast as they pop up. More from The Hollywood Reporter Billie Eilish Reveals 3D Collaboration With James Cameron Is in the Works James Cameron to Write Movie Based on Joe Abercrombie Novel 'The Devils' After Finishing 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' Les Dilley, 'Star Wars,' 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' Art Director, Dies at 84 Needless to say, fan reaction has been effusive. Fan site The Sietch of Sci-Fi said the trailer 'looks incredible.' Another raved that the trailer was 'some of the most beautiful footage I've seen all year [and I was] struck by the real sense of doom and rage — fist fights inside of cosmic volcanoes, heroes terrified, huge aerial battles.' While another entertainment writer wrote, '[The trailer] started out as 'meh, more of the same' and ended with 'yup, another billion to James Cameron.'' And a film critic wrote: 'The visuals are (somehow) on another level. There is no doubt in my mind that this WILL be the biggest movie of 2025, and 'epic' doesn't feel like it does this trailer justice.' The trailer introduces two new tribes, the Wind Traders and the fire-hurling Ash People clan. The footage shows (trailer spoilers here — if that's a thing) plenty of intense arial fighting between Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his Na'vi family, the Ash People clan and, of course, Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang, now sporting dramatic white, black and red warpaint, suggesting he might have made an alliance with the Ash People). At one point, a captive Kiri (Sigourney Weaver) is warned by a new villain, Varang (Oona Chaplin), 'Your goddess has no dominion here.' Sully — who warns, 'we cannot live like this' — is taken captive and paraded by the occupation forces. And Spider (Jack Champion) seems like he's in jeopardy quite a bit. The first Avatar, released in 2009, became the highest-grossing film of all time, raking in $2.9 billion globally. The first sequel, 2022's The Way of Water, charted as the third-highest-grossing movie of all time (with $2.3 billion), beating expectations and silencing doubters that the Oscar winner could pull off another Avatar blockbuster. At this point, few doubt Cameron's ability to generate massive box office returns with the Avatar franchise and confidence is high that Fire & Ash will deliver when its released as a major holiday tentpole on Dec. 19. While a run time hasn't yet been announced, Cameron has teased that Fire and Ash 'will be a bit longer' than The Way of Water. The last film was three hours and 12 minutes. 'In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of [Way of Water],' Cameron recently said. 'The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren't drilling down enough on character. So I said, 'Guys, we've got to split it.' [Fire & Ash] will actually be a little bit longer than [Way of Water].' Cameron plans five Avatar films and has said he intends to direct them all, as well. Much of the footage, Cameron has said, has already been shot. Avatar 4 is set for Dec. 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 will arrive Dec. 19, 2031. Cameron also hopes to adapt the Charles Pellegrino books Ghosts of Hiroshima and Last Train From Hiroshima as soon as his Avatar schedule permits. The film would focus on the true story of a Japanese man during World War II who survived the atomic blast at Hiroshima as well as the explosion in Nagasaki. If it comes to fruition, it would mark Cameron's first non-Avatar film since 1997's Titanic. Fire & Ash cast members include Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Matt Gerald, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Bailey Bass, Jemaine Clement and David Thewlis. The official description of Fire and Ash: 'Jake and Neytiri's family grapples with grief after Neteyam's death, encountering a new, aggressive Na'vi tribe, the Ash People, who are led by the fiery Varang, as the conflict on Pandora escalates and a new moral focus emerges.' Disney had no comment on the leak.
