death toll from floods in India's Himachal Pradesh state rises to 72
The Chief Minister of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, announced that the death toll from the severe floods that swept through several areas of the state has risen to at least 72, while 40 people are still missing.
Sukhu added - as reported by India TV in its English version today, Saturday - that the floods caused by heavy rains caused damage to infrastructure, while more than 100 people were injured in rain-related incidents across the state.
The channel noted that heavy rains also caused the closure of more than 500 roads across the state, and floodwaters washed away 14 bridges.
The monsoon rains, which occur between June and September in South Asia, help lower temperatures and replenish water supplies. However, they also cause widespread damage due to landslides and floods, which have increased in recent years.
