Chicago Tribune4 days ago
After just one season at Lemont, star guard Gabriel Sularski is leaving the state for his senior year.
Sularski, who had been ranked as the top player in Illinois for the 2026 class by Rivals, is transferring to Layton Christian Academy in Utah.
He confirmed the move in an interview with Rivals.
'I'm really excited to join Layton Christian,' Sularski told the website. 'I think it's a great place for me to grow both as a player and a person. The competitive schedule, the coaching staff and the environment will push me to reach the next level.
'I can't wait to get started and represent the program.'
Sularski played with Lemont over the weekend at the Romeoville Shootout, but Lemont coach Rick Runaas said he was informed Thursday of his standout player's intention to transfer again.
'We wish him luck and we thank him for the year he gave us,' Runaas said.
Sularski started his high school career at Benet before transferring to Lemont following his sophomore season. The Redwings then went on to win the Class 4A state title.
Layton Christian, meanwhile, has won seven state championships in basketball, including the 2023-24 title in 4A.
As a junior last winter, Sularski averaged 17.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists for Lemont. He was selected all-state and second team all-area and was named the South Suburban Blue's player of the year.
Sularski also has international experience, having played for Poland's U16 national team. All four of his grandparents were born in Poland.
Before his sophomore season even began, Sularski received scholarship offers from several major colleges, including Illinois and Michigan State. More recently, he picked up offers this summer from Toledo and Arkansas State.
Lemont ended up with a 26-8 record last season, losing 53-41 to eventual Class 3A state runner-up Brother Rice in a sectional final on the Crusaders' home court.
It was already going to be a different-looking Lemont team next season after the graduation of four key players.
Junior guard Zane Schneider, a three-sport standout, will likely be looked at to lead the way now.
'We're going to miss Gabe, but Lemont is still going to have a basketball team next season,' Runaas said. 'We're looking forward to another good year.'

Oklahoma Football 2027 quarterback target predicted to land with USC

NEW: Rivals' @SWiltfong_ and @samspiegs have logged expert predictions for USC to land 2027 4-star QB Peyton Houston✌️Houston is the No. 8 QB in the 2027 The Oklahoma Sooners have their quarterback situation figured out for the 2026 recruiting class with the addition of Bowe Bentley and it was believed that the Sooners were in a good spot with their top 2027 quarterback target Peyton Houston. Back in June, Brandon Drumm of OUInsider followed up on a prediction from the year prior, favoring the Sooners for Houston, but the tide has turned west on Monday. Steve Wiltfong and Sam Spiegelman of Rivals predicted that Houston would land with the USC Trojans. Houston is the No. 8 quarterback in the 2027 recruiting class and is an incredible dual-threat prospect. If the Sooners indeed miss out on Houston, they'll have to pivot to find their quarterback in the 2027 cycle. The position is in good shape for the foreseeable future with John Mateer set to start in 2025 and has eligibility to return in 2026. If Mateer goes off to the NFL, Michael Hawkins Jr. would get the first crack to take over as the starting quarterback, and OU would have Bentley along with Jett Niu and Whitt Newbauer expected to be on the roster. The only other quarterbacks Oklahoma has offered in the 2027 class are Nebraska commit Trae Taylor and unranked prospect out of St. Louis Jonathan Moore. Auburn football among several SEC schools in tight race for four-star WR Jase Mathews

Auburn remains high on the radar of Jase Mathews, who could announce his commitment soon. Auburn football remains in the mix to land a talented wide receiver from Mississippi ahead of his commitment date. Will they close the deal? Jase Mathews, a four-star wide receiver from Leakesville, Mississippi, is in the final stages of making his college decision and has placed Auburn high on his radar. Auburn is in the mix to land him, alongside fellow SEC squads Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and LSU. He gave an insight into his commitment decision in a recent interview with Rivals. 'I am really close to making a decision,' Mathews said. 'It is something I am thinking a lot about. My commitment should come before the season starts. I don't have a date set yet, but I am getting close.' The next two months will be stressful and exciting for Mathews as he weighs every option and programs look to create separation. How does Auburn stack up? Mathews says that his relationship with one assistant coach is keeping them in the running. 'It is the connection with coach (Marcus) Davis that stands out the most,' Mathews said. Ole Miss is the frontrunner according to Rivals with a 35.7% chance to land him, with Auburn next in line with a 23.5% forecast. Hugh Freeze and the Tigers' coaching staff are working to land a wide receiver for its 2026 haul after losing Denairius Gray to Kentucky last week. Auburn currently holds the No. 86 recruiting class according to 247Sports' 2026 rankings, and a commitment from Mathews, who is the No. 3 receiver in the 2026 class according to On3, would do wonders for its recruiting morale. Wisconsin football a finalist with several SEC programs for notable 2026 safety

Wisconsin football made the final schools for class of 2026 safety Jowell Combay on Sunday. The Badgers were listed alongside Missouri, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee. Combay also noted that he will announce his commitment on July 9 at 5 p.m. ET, 4 p.m. CT. 247Sports currently lists the Marietta, Georgia, native as a three-star recruit. He's specifically ranked as the No. 632 player in the class of 2026, the No. 49 safety and the No. 70 player from his home state. The recruiting service notes that he took official visits to Oklahoma State on April 25, Missouri on May 30, South Carolina on June 6, Wisconsin on June 13 and Tennessee on June 20. It does not list a trip to Georgia, one of his five finalists. 247Sports has yet to register a crystal ball prediction for Combay's commitment. On3/Rivals sees a tight four-team race, with Tennessee at 28%, South Carolina at 18.5%, Missouri at 15.9% and Wisconsin at 13.2%. Wisconsin's class of 2026 currently ranks No. 48 in the nation with 15 players committed. The program is still seeking a final boost to elevate the class into the nation's top 30.
