By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: Hajiji (7th right) taking a group photo with the eight leaders of GRS component parties and some 10,000 delegates of Gagasan Rakyat in its AGM on Sunday Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Hajiji called on all Gagasan Rakyat machinery from top leadership to the Women's, Youth and Beliawanis (Young Women's) wings down to grassroots to mobilise for PRN17 and win the hearts of voters, especially the youths. 'Work wholeheartedly for our beloved party. Use the time we have to stay close to the people. Listen to their heartbeat, understand their needs, and prove that Gagasan Rakyat is more than just a name. 'The time has come for us to enter this electoral contest with burning spirit and unshakable confidence, to fight for the people's welfare and the future of our beloved Sabah. 'God willing, we will return with a bigger, fresher, more meaningful, and more stylish mandate from the people of Sabah,' he said. Referring to the women wing as the backbone of the party he called on them to continue and intensify their on-going efforts particularly through the Ziarah Sayang Wanita initiative, a highly effective approach in reaching out directly to the people especially the grassroots. 'Our party becomes closer to the hearts of the people — and earns their trust — because of your presence at the very pulse of the community,' he said. He described the party youths as the warriors and protectors of its ideals and drivers of its fighting spirit. They must remain relevant and bold in their strategies, especially through the Gagah Muda (GAHMUDA) platform, which has now become the key avenue for engaging young voters creatively and strategically. 'I call on you to reach out to the 970,000 young voters — they are the voice of the future that we must connect with meaningfully. 'In addition, you must strengthen our party's digital presence. Social media and the digital sphere are the new frontlines of our struggle. We must fully master this space to ensure our message and ideals reach into the minds and hearts of the younger generation,' he said. As for the Young Women's Wing (Beliawanis), Hajiji who described them as the party's vibrant and energetic arm — a reflection of fresh potential – he said the party places great trust in Beliawanis to become agents of change, especially in winning the hearts of the 103,000 first-time voters — a decisive generation casting their votes for the very first time in the upcoming state election. 'Be voices of principle, vision, and readiness to shoulder leadership responsibility,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Why no noise when big tech companies mine data, asks Fahmi

Published on: Wednesday, July 30, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 30, 2025 By: Kirthana Arumugam, FMT Text Size: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil looks at a humanoid robot while visiting the exhibition at the International Connectivity Expo and Conference today. (Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil today questioned the apparent double standards by detractors of a policy on mobile data sharing with a government agency. Fahmi said there was a lot of 'hue and cry' when the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission issued a directive in June requiring phone companies to hand over data on all mobile phone calls made from January to March. MCMC's request for such data was aimed at collecting data for the statistics department. The policy, however, led to brickbats, including by the opposition and MCA, who raised concerns over privacy and data security. Today, Fahmi pointed out that tech giant Google had been fined US$314 million for allegedly stealing data from the phones of 14 million Californians. Earlier this month, a California court ordered Google to pay over US$314.6 million to Android smartphone users in the state after they filed a class-action lawsuit. The jury agreed with claims that the search engine was liable for sending and receiving information from Android devices without users' permission. 'And yet we made no noise about the kind of data that we give away practically free, every single day, to social media platforms, to search engines, to artificial intelligence, to large language models,' Fahmi said when officiating the International Connectivity Conference and Expo here. In June, Fahmi assured the public that MCMC was not collecting any personal information from telecommunications companies. Nor will the shared data be provided in a form that contains any personally identifiable information. Derek John Fernandez, an MCMC commissioner, previously told FMT the sharing of anonymised mobile phone data was neither new nor intrusive. It also mirrors what global tech platforms already do every day, he said. Fernandez also said the move is consistent with the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and falls within international best practices on data use for infrastructure planning and national development. 'This goes on every day if you subscribe to Google, Facebook – and they have even more than that,' he was quoted as saying. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? GRS leaders agree to work with PH

KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the coalition's decision to work with Pakatan Harapan (PH) was made collectively by party leaders, denying claims it was done unilaterally. Hajiji, who is also the chief minister, said the matter was discussed within GRS and among the presidents of its component parties. "We discussed it within GRS and among the presidents of the component parties," he told reporters after witnessing the signing of two Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) between Kota Kinabalu City Hall and two companies at a hotel here. "Therefore, don't pay too much attention to what you hear, the politicking in Sabah is excessive," Hajiji added. On Sunday, the 69-year-old veteran politician said GRS would collaborate with PH in the upcoming state election, despite calls from within its components for the coalition to contest solo. Present at the event were Assistant Minister to Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Abidin Madingkir and city mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah. Meanwhile, Parti Bersatu Sabah secretary-general Datuk Julita Majungki, however, said in a statement today that the party would support Hajiji's decision to work with PH. When asked about the date of the meeting, Hajiji replied: "I will call for the meeting later, but I cannot disclose it now." Commenting on his recent working visit to Indonesia with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the 13th Annual Consultation, Hajiji said he had clearly conveyed the Sabah government's position regarding the D5 and D6 blocks off the Sulawesi Sea. "The meeting was positive and is now at the stage of refining matters that are beneficial for Sabah," he said.

Sabah polls: Decision to collaborate with Pakatan was not made unilaterally, says Hajiji

KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) leaders were consulted in the decision to collaborate with Pakatan Harapan in the upcoming Sabah elections, according to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor ( pic ). "We have discussed with all the presidents of the parties," he said, dismissing assumptions that the decision was unilateral, as some leaders were surprised by his announcement of the pact being finalised. He was asked whether the decision to work with Pakatan was his own and one-sided, to which he stressed that he had met with the presidents of the parties in the eight-party GRS coalition prior to the announcement during the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) on Sunday. Earlier, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee, whose party is keen for GRS to go solo, said that GRS had not met to endorse any decision for the pact with Pakatan. Hajiji noted that there is a lot of politicking going on in Sabah at the moment, and it was best not to listen to everything being said or circulated outside. As to whether and when the supreme council will be meeting, he confirmed it would happen but declined to give a date. 'I will call and inform you later. I cannot tell you now because we don't have a date yet,' he added. On other issues, Hajiji, who recently returned from Jakarta with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, mentioned that the meeting between Malaysia and Jakarta touched on issues relating to Sabah, among other things. 'We have stated the state government's stand on issues concerning us and the outcome was very positive,' he said without further elaboration. All he could say is that issues relating to Sabah were being fine-tuned and good things were in place for the state. As to the long-standing maritime boundary claim involving Ambalat with the Indonesian government, Hajiji said these were discussed based on international laws, indicating it was a separate matter.
