Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara launches Raksha QR code to combat drug abuse
BENGALURU: To tackle the drug menace in Karnataka, Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara launched the Raksha QR code on Thursday, enabling citizens to anonymously report instances of drug trafficking and usage. The initiative was launched as part of the 66th International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, held at Kanteerava Stadium.
Parameshwara also virtually gave permission to destroy 143.774 kg of various types of drugs valued at Rs 45 crore, seized by the Bengaluru City Police. The drugs were scientifically destructed at a facility in Hoskote.
Meanwhile, thousands, including students, participated in the event, where they took an oath committing to a drug-free lifestyle. Parameshwara urged students not to ruin their future by falling into drug abuse.
He said that drugs worth Rs 45 crore were seized in the past year and over 200 foreigners involved in drug trade were deported.
'We are running awareness programmes to educate the youth. If such activities continue despite warnings, strict legal action will follow,' he said, adding that 6.5 lakh students have been sensitised and police officers have been directed to visit educational institutions monthly, with each college required to form an anti-drug committee.

Delhi drugs control department cracks down on sale of fake cholesterol medicines
The Delhi drugs control department recently uncovered a multi-level distribution network involved in the sale and circulation of spurious Rosuvas F 20 tablets, a prescription drug used to manage cholesterol and triglyceride levels, officials said on Friday. The action followed a complaint from Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, which reported that fake versions of its Rosuvas F 20 tablets were being sold by a retail outlet in central Delhi. The complaint mentioned a multi-level supply chain involving multiple wholesalers and distributors across the city. Rosuvas F 20 is a fixed-dose combination drug containing Rosuvastatin (20 mg) and Fenofibrate (160 mg). It is commonly prescribed to patients who require medication to manage high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, especially when lifestyle changes alone are not sufficient. The drug plays a vital role in preventing serious cardiovascular conditions such as heart attacks and strokes. Drugs control department officials said Rosuvas F 20 tablets were a fast-moving drug, and on June 14 and 15, 1,800 spurious tablets worth Rs 88,000 were seized from two locations in Okhla and Bhagirath Palace. 'On June 14, we first received a complaint from Rajinder Nagar, but no stock was found. A link was established in Okhla and Bhagirath Palace, where raids were conducted,' an official said. Officials noted irregularities and a suspicious absence of genuine stock at several distribution points, which ultimately led them to a firm located in the Okhla Industrial Area. 'Visual inspection and comparison with authentic samples suggested that the seized products were spurious — their appearance and packaging did not match those of the legitimate manufacturer,' said an official. Here, additional suspect stock of Rosuvas F 20 was found. Legal samples were collected from Bhagirath Palace, Chandni Chowk—one of Delhi's busiest medicine markets—and sent to a government laboratory for quality testing, while manufacturer verification is also underway, officials revealed. The department has secured custody permission for the seized drugs through the Delhi High Court. 'We are now coordinating with authorities in other states to trace the full supply chain behind the fake medication,' the official said.

In Bengaluru, thieves targeted a truck transporting high-end Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycles. While they failed to steal a complete bike, they made off with parts, damaging one Hayabusa in the process. Although they failed to steal the superbike itself, they managed to escape with several parts, the driver's phone, and to a TOI report, Nanda Lal, 45, from Dungarpur in Rajasthan, was driving a truck loaded with Suzuki Hayabusa bikes from Haryana. The delivery was meant for two Bengaluru-based dealers, Apple Auto Agency in Banashankari and Aryan Auto Agency in successfully dropped off some bikes at Apple Auto on June 22. But while heading to Bidarahalli later that night, he lost his way near East Point Hospital in Virgonagar. At around 2am, with hardly anyone on the road, he parked the truck by the roadside and walked into the hospital to ask for directions, leaving the keys in the when the thieves struck. In just a few minutes, they drove away with the had left both his mobile phone and wallet in the truck, making it hard for him to call for help. After failing to find the vehicle nearby, he walked to Aryan Auto Agency early the next morning. He informed employee Jagadish, borrowed his phone, and called the truck owner. Using GPS tracking, they traced the truck to Gundur village near Nanda and Jagadish reached the spot, a playground in Gundur, they found that the thieves had tried to remove one of the Hayabusa bikes but failed. However, they had damaged both sides of the bike, taken its mirrors, silencer, batteries, and the key set. They had also stolen Rs 3,000 in cash and Nanda's mobile phone.A case was filed under BNS Section 303 (theft) at Avalahally police station. Online betting rampant in Telangana, majority aged 18-25; low-income groups 79% report losing over Rs 50,000
HYDERABAD: A majority of people involved in online gambling and betting in Telangana are aged between 18 and 25, according to a survey conducted by the Public Response Against Helplessness and Action for Redressal (PRAHAR), an NGO. The findings were revealed on Friday at an event titled 'Click:Bet:Repeat: Consumer Survey on the Forces Driving Online Betting and Gambling', held in Telangana, where online betting is banned. It found that the majority of the respondents who placed bets came from low-income backgrounds, with nearly 38% of them earning a monthly income of less than Rs 15,000. The study focussed on users accessing betting platforms through apps available on the Play Store, as well as through links available on Telegram or advertisements on social media. 'Telegram popular choice' "Players are careful not to reveal their true identities while betting, which makes VPNs the most popular choice - used by 69% of respondents. Telegram links are the second popular choice at 20%," said president of PRAHAR Abhay Raj, during a press findings highlighted that online betting continues unabated in the state despite the ban. "For instance, 87% of the respondents said they engage in online gambling every day, and 89% of the respondents said betting sites are easily accessible. Most of the respondents - 96% - knew that it was illegal too," the survey found. The majority of them said they were drawn into the betting to make easy money. "The prospects of winning large sums from meagre investment attracts 86% of users, while 56% continue betting because they believe others are winning big," a member from the NGO said. The respondents claimed that they had lost more than they invested. According to the data, 79% of punters reported losses exceeding Rs 50,000. He recommended that Telangana consider implementing a conditional ban, similar to the one followed in Tamil Nadu.
