Highlighting that there could be a lull in rainfall activity with chances of temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees C in Marathwada over the next week, the agricultural department has asked the farming community to wait until the monsoon advances.
"The progress of the monsoon was halted in Maharashtra during the past two weeks and is expected to remain the same until June 15. Therefore, the farming community was advised not to go for sowing hurriedly ," an advisory issued by the agricultural department on Monday said.
K K Dakhore, an agricultural meteorologist with the Parbhani-based Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Agricultural University, said the monsoon has not advanced yet in Marathwada. "Marathwada annually witnesses sowing between June 15 and July 15. Considering the current weather systems, the monsoon is expected to become active in the region soon, producing favourable conditions for kharif sowing," he said.
Ashok Mane, a farmer from Beed, said the showers in May came as a pleasant surprise but produced a set of problems, too. "We made farms ready for the kharif season during summer, but weeds have grown in farms due to unseasonal rain. We have been spending additional money on labourers to remove the weeds before kharif sowing," he said.
Marathwada reported a whopping 178 mm of rainfall in May, which accounted for 1389% of expected showers. The region, comprising eight districts, has recorded around 15 mm of rainfall in June so far. |

Ernakulam DDMA holds emergency meeting

An emergency meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) was held on Thursday (June 26, 2025) afternoon after heavy rain caused a sharp rise in the water level of the Muvattupuzha river, inundating several vulnerable areas in Muvattupuzha town and its adjoining areas. The meeting, chaired by District Collector N.S.K. Umesh and attended by representatives of various departments, reviewed the precautionary measures in place. Mr. Umesh, who also serves as the chairperson of the DDMA, said the district administration was fully prepared to deal with the challenges posed by the intense rain. The Collector instructed the police, Fire and Rescue Services, and the Revenue department to remain on alert to ensure public safety. The water levels in both the Muvattupuzha and Thodupuzha rivers crossed flood warning levels on Thursday morning after the shutters of the Malankara dam were opened. The dam's Executive Engineer has been directed to regulate the shutters based on the inflow. Two affected families were shifted to a relief camp set up at a school in Vazhappilly. Muvattupuzha MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan, DDMA Deputy Collector K. Manoj, and other elected representatives and officials attended the meeting. The situation remains grim in North Paravur taluk, where relief camps have been opened at Kadungalloor and Kunnukara. A section of the affected population has alleged that the shutters of the Peringalkuthu dam were opened without adequate warning. The situation worsened as floodwaters from the high ranges, which continue to receive heavy rainfall, raised river levels, further affecting people living along the banks. 'The authorities must remain alert as high tide is expected on Thursday night. People living along the Chalakkudy and Periyar river basins, especially in areas like Kunnukara and Puthenvelikkara—which were among the worst hit during the 2018 floods—should exercise caution,' said C.G. Madhusoodhanan, CEO of Equinoct, a Kochi-based community-sourced modelling solution provider. Holiday declared The District Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, anganwadis, and tuition centres, in view of the heavy rain and strong winds forecast inthe district, which is under an orange alert for Friday (June 27, 2025).

Subdued monsoon raises concerns for Marathwada farmers in kharif season

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Marathwada farmers have been concerned as there were no widespread showers during the kharif season in June so far. A major portion of farmers are yet to undertake sowing. The region, comprising eight districts, developed a 31% rainfall deficit by Monday. According to an official report, Marathwada witnessed approximately 10% of total Kharif sowing by June 16. K K Dakhore, an agricultural meteorologist with Parbhani-based Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Agricultural University (VNMKV), stated that revival of the monsoon was unlikely for the region, until June-end. "There were good showers in May. However, we advised the farming community against going for kharif sowing until 100mm of rainfall was received over 10 days in June. The subdued monsoon delayed the sowing in Marathwada. For those farmers who already undertook sowing, they are sorting to irrigate the crops," he said. Dakhore stated that kharif sowing could be undertaken until July 15. "There is no potential loss if the kharif sowing is carried out once the monsoon is revived by next month. The delayed sowing will only push the kharif cycle of crop forward," he said. Soyabean, cotton, and pigeon pea, among other crops, dominate the kharif sowing in Marathwada. The region witnessed nearly 1,400% of expected rainfall in May. Among the 8 districts in Marathwada, Parbhani district reported the highest rainfall deficit of 59%, followed by Hingoli (50%), Beed (44%), Nanded (40%), Latur (35%), Jalna (27%), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (4%), and Dharashiv (2%), according to official data.
