EOW issues fresh summons to Salar Jung kin, Sena MP's driver in Rs150 crore land gift case

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The economic offences wing of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city police on Friday issued fresh summons to the descendants of the Salar Jung family from Hyderabad and Jawed Rasul Shaikh, driver of Shiv Sena MP Sandipan Bhumre and his MLA son Vilas. Police are probing the legality of a gift deed or hibanama under which the Jung family transferred a three-acre plot valued at more than Rs150 crore in the driver's name. Mir Mehmud Ali Khan, one of the descendants of Salar Jung, and his kin, along with Shaikh, failed to respond to the earlier summons. "After they did not turn up to record their statements the first time, fresh notices have been issued asking them to remain present before EOW," EOW inspector Sambhaji Pawar said. On Thursday, Vilas Bhumre, MLA from Paithan, distanced himself and his father from the transaction. "Though Jawed is our driver, we are in no way connected to the land deal," he said, adding that he was also questioned by EOW in this case. The land in question, located in Dawoodpura on Jalna Road, is part of a 12-acre parcel claimed by the Salar Jung family. According to the gift deed, 12,438.2 square metres (around three acres) were transferred to Jawed after a 2023 revenue department ruling upheld the family's claim to the land following a prolonged legal battle. The inquiry was initiated after a police complaint by Parbhani-based lawyer Mujahid Khan, who raised questions about the propriety of such a high-value land gift to a driver, unrelated by blood and belonging to a different sect of Islam. As per Islamic law, hibanamas or gift deeds are generally considered valid among blood relatives. Jawed, who has been working with the Bhumre family for more than a decade, earlier told TOI that he shared good relations with the Salar Jung family and received the land as a gift. EOW continues to scrutinise the documents submitted by the complainant and is awaiting the appearance of all parties concerned for ascertaining facts.

Subdued monsoon raises concerns for Marathwada farmers in kharif season

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Marathwada farmers have been concerned as there were no widespread showers during the kharif season in June so far. A major portion of farmers are yet to undertake sowing. The region, comprising eight districts, developed a 31% rainfall deficit by Monday. According to an official report, Marathwada witnessed approximately 10% of total Kharif sowing by June 16. K K Dakhore, an agricultural meteorologist with Parbhani-based Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Agricultural University (VNMKV), stated that revival of the monsoon was unlikely for the region, until June-end. "There were good showers in May. However, we advised the farming community against going for kharif sowing until 100mm of rainfall was received over 10 days in June. The subdued monsoon delayed the sowing in Marathwada. For those farmers who already undertook sowing, they are sorting to irrigate the crops," he said. Dakhore stated that kharif sowing could be undertaken until July 15. "There is no potential loss if the kharif sowing is carried out once the monsoon is revived by next month. The delayed sowing will only push the kharif cycle of crop forward," he said. Soyabean, cotton, and pigeon pea, among other crops, dominate the kharif sowing in Marathwada. The region witnessed nearly 1,400% of expected rainfall in May. Among the 8 districts in Marathwada, Parbhani district reported the highest rainfall deficit of 59%, followed by Hingoli (50%), Beed (44%), Nanded (40%), Latur (35%), Jalna (27%), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (4%), and Dharashiv (2%), according to official data.

Agri department advises farmers to delay kharif sowing due to weak monsoon

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The state agriculture department has advised farmers not to undertake sowing for the kharif season at present, considering the overall monsoon conditions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Highlighting that there could be a lull in rainfall activity with chances of temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees C in Marathwada over the next week, the agricultural department has asked the farming community to wait until the monsoon advances. "The progress of the monsoon was halted in Maharashtra during the past two weeks and is expected to remain the same until June 15. Therefore, the farming community was advised not to go for sowing hurriedly ," an advisory issued by the agricultural department on Monday said. K K Dakhore, an agricultural meteorologist with the Parbhani-based Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Agricultural University, said the monsoon has not advanced yet in Marathwada. "Marathwada annually witnesses sowing between June 15 and July 15. Considering the current weather systems, the monsoon is expected to become active in the region soon, producing favourable conditions for kharif sowing," he said. Ashok Mane, a farmer from Beed, said the showers in May came as a pleasant surprise but produced a set of problems, too. "We made farms ready for the kharif season during summer, but weeds have grown in farms due to unseasonal rain. We have been spending additional money on labourers to remove the weeds before kharif sowing," he said. Marathwada reported a whopping 178 mm of rainfall in May, which accounted for 1389% of expected showers. The region, comprising eight districts, has recorded around 15 mm of rainfall in June so far. |
