Using religion for political gains

The Hindu08-06-2025
For the last four decades, political narratives in Andhra Pradesh have always hinged on caste equations. Even if we look at the composition of the current National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the two major parties — the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Jana Sena Party (JSP) — are largely represented by two major castes in Andhra Pradesh — the Kammas and the Kapus. Similarly, the Congress and YSR Congress Party are dominated by the Reddy community.
This was not always the case. Before the 1980s, the key players in Andhra Pradesh were the Congress and Left parties, and their narratives were largely based on social issues. Though there were underlying currents of caste-based politics, these did not surface often. The narrative of caste-based politics started with the entry of N.T. Rama Rao into politics in 1982. Rao, the founder of the TDP, advocated for Telugu pride, yet his party was often termed a 'Kamma party'.
Ever since the composite State of Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated in 2014, and Telangana was formed, the politics in the residual State of Andhra Pradesh has changed and has assumed religious overtones. While this was noticeable during the previous YSRCP government headed by Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, it has become all the more evident during the current NDA regime, which came to power in 2024. Political narratives have been based largely on a number of issues revolving around places of worship and have caused quite a stir in the State.
The most prominent of these is the controversy surrounding the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD). It broke out in September 2024 when Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu alleged that the laddu prasadam was being made with adulterated ghee containing animal fat. He claimed that the contract for the supply of sub-standard ghee had been given to a firm by the earlier YSRCP government.
The accusation caused political and religious outrage across the country. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, who is the JSP chief, claimed that adding adulterated ghee was a concerted move to attack Sanatana Dharma. The parties and allies of the NDA left no stone unturned in attacking Mr. Jagan Reddy and his party. They went to the extent of saying that the practice of hiring staff from other faiths had led to 'sacrilege' of the TTD. A Special Investigation Team was constituted to probe this matter and the issue finally reached the Supreme Court.
When the controversy died down after a couple of months, Mr. Reddy turned the tables on the NDA following a stampede at the Vaikunta Ekadasi festival at the TTD temple in Tirupati. The incident, which took place on January 8, claimed six lives. Mr. Jagan Reddy and his party alleged negligence, and held the NDA responsible for it.
Before this incident too could die down, TTD's former chairman, former MLA Bhumana
Karunakar Reddy, alleged that over 170 cows had died in a month at the devasthanams goshala (cow shed) and said that funds for the goshala were being misused by the present TTD board and officials. This led to tense moments in the temple town. Both the YSRCP and the NDA locked horns over the issue. All the political parties in the State, including the Left parties, took turns to add to the discourse. The issue reached a feverish pitch and dominated the political narrative in the State.
However, this is not the case only with the present NDA regime although it seems more prominent now. The desecration of Lord Rama's idol at the 12th century Ramatheertham yemple in Vizianagaram district in December 2020 gained considerable political traction. The YSRCP was in power then. All the Opposition parties, including the TDP, the JSP, and the BJP, raised their pitch and made this an election issue in the 2024 general elections. In the same year, a century-old wooden chariot of the Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple, located in Sakhinetipalli Mandal in East Godavari district, was set on fire by miscreants. The Opposition parties alleged that people from other faiths had set fire to the chariot. The suspect in the case, who hails from a minority community, was killed in a road accident.
Senior politicians and political analysts say that this appears to be a new trend in the State. With religious issues taking centre stage, core issues are taking a backseat.

The commission headed by retired high court judge, Justice M Satyanarayana Murthy, however, found fault with the director of cow protection centre Dr Harinatha Reddy and DSP AV Ramana Kumar for not taking adequate safety and security measures as per the instructions of senior officials. Six persons were killed and over 50 injured in the stampede during the token distribution for Vaikunta Ekadashi darshan on Jan 8. The state cabinet discussed the report submitted by the judicial commission on Thursday and approved it. Muslim clerics, Mohan Bhagwat agree on interfaith dialogue at meet

Amid growing discontent among Muslims against the NDA government over Waqf Amendment Act and other issues, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat and other senior functionaries of the organisation met prominent Muslim clerics and scholars in New Delhi on Thursday. In the meeting, a host of 'national issues' were discussed and the two sides stressed upon the need to start a series of dialogue between representatives of Hindu and Muslim communities to clear the 'misunderstandings'. The All India Imam Organisation (AIIO) had organised the meeting titled — 'Samvaad' — at Haryana Bhawan. Along with Bhagwat, senior functionaries, including Krishna Gopal, Ramlal and Indresh Kumar, were present in the meeting. AIIO chief Imam Umer Ahmed Ilyasi said the meeting lasted for about three-and-a-half hours and was attended by 60 prominent imams, muftis and representatives of prominent Islamic seminaries like Deoband and Nadwa. The RSS described the discussion in the meeting as 'positive' and said it was part of a continuous process of holding an extensive dialogue with all the sections of society. 'The main objective is to explore how everyone can work together in the interest of the country. Today's discussion was also positive,' said Sunil Ambekar, the head of the national publicity and media department of the RSS. 'A detailed discussion on national issues took place at the meeting. It was decided that there should be a dialogue between mandirs and masjids, imams and pujaris, gurukuls and madrasas so that misconceptions and confusions about each other are removed and a positive atmosphere of harmony and brotherhood is developed,' Ilyasi told The Indian Express. He said it was discussed that everyone from across the castes, faiths and religions should have the sentiment of 'rashtra sarvopari' (nation is supreme) and contribute in nation building. Possible roles and responsibilities of imams and muftis in taking the nation forward were also discussed in the meeting, he said. Asked about the RSS chief's view on the decision, he said Bhagwat appreciated the idea of continuous dialogue to clear the misunderstandings and misconceptions. 'A consensus was reached to take this forward… Similar meetings will be held in different parts of the country. The schedule will be decided soon,' Ilyasi said. When asked about the 'national issues' discussed in the meeting, Ilyasi refused to share details. When asked if any 'concern' was expressed by the clerics on the contentious issues like new Waqf Act and survey of mosques, Ilyasi said, 'It was not a meeting about concerns but for building trust and a good atmosphere.'

TDP, BJP leaders submit memoranda to CEO on strengthening the electoral process

TDP leaders Alapati Rajendra Prasad (MLC), former MLC P. Ashok Babu, and A.P. Education & Welfare Infrastructure Development Corporation (APEWIDC) Chairman K. Raja Sekhar submitted a memorandum to Chief Electoral Officer Vivek Yadav at the Secretariat on Thursday (July 24, 2025) on strengthening the electoral process within the legal framework. They made 13 suggestions for ensuring free, fair and transparent elections, which were the cornerstone of a vibrant democracy. Some of the important suggestions were to advise the Booth-Level Agents (BLAs) and Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) to gather information related to deaths from the local bodies at prescribed intervals and update the voters' list accordingly, avoid the 'zero door number' system, and adopt a permanent methodology that sorts out the inconsistencies thereof. They also suggested that a family residing in the same door number / premises should be allotted the same polling station and that better amenities be provided to the Returning Officers by allowing them to take private premises like schools, colleges and halls, and devise a separate mechanism using the present technology for deleting duplicate votes. Further, the TDP leaders also recommended that extra time be given to cast votes to make up for the time lost due to the malfunctioning of the EVMs, the size of the parties' symbols in the VVPAT devices should be increased. They also sought that the involvement of youth in the voting process should be increased by spreading awareness about the importance of getting themselves enrolled as and when they attain 18 years of age. Further, they sought facilities to the elderly, differently-abled persons, and pregnant women to avoid inconvenience, and that a photo revision programme be taken up at fixed intervals. A BJP delegation, comprising K. Dileep and U. Srinivasa Raju, requested the CEO to strengthen the BLO training and monitoring, use GIS tools for rationalising polling stations, fully adopt ERONet across districts, do real-time syncing of data with death and migration records, strictly adhere to the Representation of People Act, implement the SVEEP programme in low registration areas, and make schools / colleges as voter enrollment hubs.
