Delhi govt working on long-term solution for sustainable transportation: CM

Business Standard15 hours ago
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday said her government is working on long-term solutions for clean and sustainable transportation, after the government urged the Centre's air quality panel to immediately suspend the fuel ban on overage vehicles.
In his letter to Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) chairman Rajesh Verma, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the fuel ban is not feasible and that it cannot be implemented due to technological challenges. The move came three days after the ban came into effect in the national capital.
"In view of the hardships being faced by the citizens of Delhi, our government has written to the CAQM, requesting a reconsideration of the decision to stop supplying fuel to end-of-life (EOL) vehicles. This decision is adversely affecting the daily lives and livelihoods of millions of families," Gupta said in a post on X in Hindi.
She said her government is fully committed to controlling air pollution and is working on long-term solutions for clean and sustainable transportation.
"However, while implementing any decision, it is equally important to maintain a balance with the social and economic needs of the citizens," she added.
Gupta said through a letter sent by Sirsa, they have urged that this order be immediately put on hold in the public interest, "and that a practical, just, and phased solution be formulated after consultations with all stakeholders".
The Delhi government stands firmly with the people of Delhi in its commitment to public welfare and convenience, she said.

Man Who Ranted About His 16-Year-Old Mercedes Said This After Fuel Ban Pause In Delhi

Last Updated: Delhi man breathed a sigh of relief after the government paused its End-of-life Rule that banned older vehicles from filling their tanks. Shivrattan Dhillon recently took to X to express his strong disagreement with Delhi's fuel ban for older cars running in the city. The government's decision to combat pollution and encourage sustainable mobility by prohibiting older vehicles from refuelling with petrol or diesel sparked widespread online outrage. Many voiced frustration with the strict law, arguing that their older vehicles, though well-maintained and compliant with pollution tests, faced impoundment or scrapping if caught by cameras at select city petrol pumps. Dhillon was among the many who voiced their anger, and his post about his father's 16-year-old Mercedes went viral on 'X' while resonating with many who found themselves in a similar sticky situation. 'This is my dad's 16-year-old Mercedes E280 V6 still running stronger and cleaner than most of the so-called modern cars that keep breaking down on roads. Every single button still works, and the engine? Still does 0–100 in just 6–7 seconds. Zero pollution, zero nonsense. But sadly, I have to label it a 'vintage scrap" just because we live in a country where politicians have zero love for cars! I challenge the government to prove it pollutes. They won't, but they'll still penalize it!" Dhillon wrote as he shared the photos of this family's Mercedes car. End-of-life Rule On Hold The rule that came into effect on July 1 lasted two days, after which it was put on hold. 'Delhi Chief Minister has assured residents that old vehicles will not be impounded arbitrarily. We will not allow old vehicles to be impounded. At the same time, we are committed to controlling pollution in Delhi," Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said. This came after a widespread backlash from Delhi residents and criticism from opposition leaders. 'Delhi residents are already facing issues regarding End-of-Life Vehicles. The government has written to the Chairman of CAQM (Commission for Air Quality Management) and stated that it lacks the necessary infrastructure to implement the policy," he added as he acknowledged the discontent of the Delhi residents over the end-of-life rule. Sigh Of Relief As the Delhi government paused the End-of-Life vehicle impounding policy, Dhillon once again took to 'X', this time to express his happiness that the voice of the common citizen prevailed. 'DELHI GOVERNMENT TO ADJUST VEHICLE POLICY – Delhi government to modify vehicle policy, sparing old vehicles from scrapping – Only polluting vehicles will be scrapped, not all vehicles It feels like we finally made it grateful to everyone who supported us, especially the national news channels!" DELHI GOVERNMENT TO ADJUSTVEHICLE POLICY– Delhi government to modify vehicle policy, sparing old vehicles from scrapping– Only polluting vehicles will be scrapped, not all vehicles It feels like we finally made it grateful to everyone who supported us, especially the… — Rattan Dhillon (@ShivrattanDhil1) July 3, 2025 He further informed that following his original post, he received several offers from potential buyers to purchase his father's Mercedes. He claimed he received upwards of 500 messages from people who offered him twice or triple the current price of an old Mercedes E280 V6. 'Received over 500 similar messages people offering double or even triple the current price for the old Mercedes E280 V6. It's heartening to see the love for classic machines still alive. There's something timeless about that old-school charm the pure driving feel. With modern cars, buyers test drive, analyze features, compare endlessly before deciding. But with these old Mercs, people are ready to seal the deal without even seeing the vehicle. That's the kind of respect cars used to command built to last a lifetime, unlike today's models that feel outdated in just a few years!(sic)" News18's viral page features trending stories, videos, and memes, covering quirky incidents, social media buzz from india and around the world, Also Download the News18 App to stay updated! tags : delhi Location : New Delhi, India, India First Published: July 04, 2025, 14:12 IST News viral Man Who Ranted About His 16-Year-Old Mercedes Said This After Fuel Ban Pause In Delhi

Rahul attacks Modi govt over Maha farmer suicides

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday attacked the Modi government over farmer suicides in Maharashtra, saying that it remains indifferent to farmers' plight, even as they are sinking deeper into debt every day. In a post on X in Hindi, the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha accused the government of ignoring farmers' demands for a loan waiver and a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP) for crops. On Wednesday, opposition members walked out of the Maharashtra Assembly twice over issues of farmer suicides and non-payment of dues to soybean cultivators in the state. 'This system is killing farmers -- silently, but continuously and Modi ji is watching the spectacle of his own PR,' Gandhi said. Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar claimed in the assembly that 767 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra between January and March this year. While 200 cases were declared ineligible for aid, inquiries are pending in 194 cases, he said. Gandhi also shared a screenshot of a news report which put the number of farmer suicides in Maharashtra in the first three months at 767. 'Think about it... in just 3 months, 767 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra. Is this just a statistic? No. These are 767 destroyed homes. 767 families that will never be able to recover. And the government? It is silent. It is watching indifferently,' the former Congress president said. Farmers are sinking deeper into debt every day as seeds, fertilizers and diesel are expensive. 'But there is no guarantee of MSP. When they demand a loan waiver, they are ignored,' he charged. 'But (what about) those who have crores? The Modi government easily waives their loans. Just look at today's news -- Anil Ambani's Rs 48,000 crore SBI 'fraud',' he said. 'Modi ji had said that he would double the income of farmers. Today the situation is such that the life of the farmer is being halved. BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya hit back, sharing a chart on X which claimed that 55,928 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra during the 15-year tenure of the NCP-Congress government. 'The politics of counting the dead is disgusting, but it is necessary to show the mirror to people like Rahul Gandhi,' Malviya said.

Delhi HC dismisses plea by actor Jacqueline Fernandez to quash money-laundering case against her

The Delhi High Court on Thursday dismissed Hindi film actor Jacqueline Fernandez's petition seeking to quash a Rs 200 crore money laundering case linked to conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar, Live Law reported. The actor had moved court seeking to quash the Enforcement Directorate's case against her, along with a second supplementary chargesheet that names her as the tenth accused. In her plea, Fernandez claimed that she was a victim of Chandrasekhar's 'maliciously targeted attack'. 'There is absolutely no indication she had any involvement whatsoever in aiding him to launder his purportedly ill-gotten wealth,' the legal news outlet quoted the plea as saying. The petition said that in view of this, she could not be prosecuted for alleged money laundering. Fernandez's plea also stated that the Enforcement Directorate had acknowledged that Tihar Jail officials gave Chandrasekhar unrestricted access to mobile phones and other technology, which he allegedly used to deceive the original complainant and several film artists, including herself. The plea further argued that since the agency had already recorded her statement as a prosecution witness in the original fraud case, continuing proceedings against her in the money laundering case was unjustified. In the money laundering case, Chandrashekhar is accused of extorting around Rs 215 crore from Shivinder Singh, a former promoter of pharmaceutical giant Ranbaxy, and his wife Aditi Singh. Chandrashekhar had allegedly impersonated the Union home secretary, law secretary and an officer in the prime minister's office while speaking to them. On August 7, 2022, Chandrashekhar was arrested by the Delhi Police. The Enforcement Directorate is also investigating the allegations that Chandrashekhar used funds gained by cheating and extorting high-profile individuals to buy gifts for Fernandez. The agency had named the actor in a supplementary chargesheet in the case. The supplementary chargesheet alleged that Chandrashekhar gave gifts worth Rs 5.71 crore to Fernandez from the proceeds of crime generated by criminal activities, including extortion. The investigating agency also claimed that Fernandez was aware that the gifts given to her were the proceeds of crime.
