Over 1,500 Corporation school students attend higher education orientation in Coimbatore

More than 1,500 students from the Corporation schools in Coimbatore, who had completed their Class XII examinations, participated in a higher education orientation programme, held in the city on Friday, under the State government's Kalloori Kanavu scheme.
The event featured stalls from 41 colleges, which showcased a range of higher education opportunities available to students. A special camp was also organised to assist students in obtaining essential documents such as income certificates, community certificates, first-generation graduate certificates, and to update Aadhaar details.
A handbook listing colleges in the district and the courses they offer was distributed to students. The booklet is intended to serve as a guide to help them make informed decisions about pursuing higher education.
Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar addressed the students, encouraging them to introspect and make use of the orientation camps. 'Self-reflection can lead to success and inspire individuals throughout their journey. Students should make full use of the Kalloori Kanavu initiative, as higher education plays a key role in career development,' he said.
The programme featured thematic sessions conducted by subject experts. One session focused on the role of self-confidence in pursuing higher education, while another provided guidance on available scholarship schemes. Insights into paramedical education were also shared.
Further sessions covered opportunities in ITI, diploma, engineering, and arts and science programmes. Information on agricultural education was provided by the District Employment Office, and details regarding education loans were shared by a representative from the banking sector.
Coimbatore MP Ganapathi P. Rajkumar, Mayor K. Ranganayaki, Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran, and officials from the School Education Department and other departments were present.

The Tiruchi Corporation has finalised the Detailed Project Report (DPR) to construct a bungalow to serve as a guest house for senior government officials and dignitaries, at Kambarasampettai in the city. The project is aimed at addressing the lack of adequate infrastructure in the city for the visiting dignitaries. The facility, which is to come up near the Kambarasampettai headworks station at an estimated cost of ₹4.65 crore, will have modern amenities and infrastructure. The bungalow would provide accommodation for the higher officials and Unon and State ministers visiting Tiruchi. As per the plan, the two-storey building will feature two suite rooms, a conference hall, a lounge, a waiting lobby, a common dining hall, a kitchen, a portico, sanitation complexes, office room on the ground floor spread over 5,340 square metres. The first floor will house two suites, a waiting lobby and a balcony at 4,240 square metres. A parking area to accommodate two-wheelers and four-wheelers will be developed. After a feasibility study, the Corporation has finalised the DPR and submitted the report to the State government seeking approval to execute the project at a cost of ₹4.65 crore. The Corporation has requested the government to release special funds for taking up the construction. 'The civic body expects the State government to accord the administrative and technical sanctions soon. A relevant scheme is yet to be decided to fund the project. The facility is expected to be constructed within a year from the date of commencement of work,' said a senior Corporation official.

However, frequent challenges such as SMS delivery failures and biometric mismatches at the UIDAI end were causing inconvenience to the beneficiaries, Gokul Butail, Principal Advisor to the Chief Minister, said in a the launch of the FaceAuth mechanism, the process has now been streamlined and made more accessible, Butail noted, adding that, unlike traditional methods, this new facility uses a mobile camera via an app installed on the fair price shop (FPS) owner's smartphone, enabling direct facial authentication of beneficiaries."In a significant technological advancement, the department of Digital Technologies and Governance (DDTG), Himachal Pradesh, has introduced Aadhaar-based face authentication (FaceAuth) for the distribution of ration to eligible beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System (PDS)," Butail emphasised that this pioneering initiative underscores the state's commitment to leveraging digital technology for enhancing public service delivery and promoting inclusive access to essential new system is expected to improve the authentication success rate and reduce verification time, ensuring a faster and more efficient ration distribution process, the statement added.
