In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral defence ties and advancing local military capabilities, Malaysia's Mildef International Technologies Sdn Bhd has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Turkish defence giant Aselsan AŞ to upgrade the Tarantula 4×4 armoured vehicle with cutting-edge technologies.
The agreement, signed at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition, positions Mildef as the main contractor and platform provider, while Aselsan will contribute key defence technologies, including remote-controlled weapon systems, communication systems, electro-optical sensors and command and control systems.
'This collaboration enables both parties to jointly submit technical and commercial proposals to the Malaysian government, ensuring shared responsibilities, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance,' Mildef said in a statement.
The partnership also aims to promote cost efficiency, enable technology transfer and strengthen Malaysia's defence industry by integrating global technological expertise with local innovation.
By aligning local industrial strength with international innovation, the agreement reinforces Malaysia's defence self-reliance agenda and strengthens its position within the regional defence ecosystem, while paving the way for future technological advancements in combat vehicle capabilities. Johor Bahru bus drivers strike disrupts Singapore commute

JOHOR BAHRU: Private employee Saiful Umar, 37, was among thousands caught off guard when around 100 Malaysian bus drivers operating to Singapore suddenly went on strike early this morning at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI). 'I was shocked, there was no information at all (on a strike),' he said. Passengers arriving as early as 5 am found no bus services, forcing some to walk one to two kilometres across the Johor Causeway to reach workplaces in Singapore. Saiful, who had to walk nearly two kilometres to Woodlands before getting a ride back to Tampoi, expressed frustration over the lack of prior notice. 'This situation is not only inconvenient but also affects our work and image,' he told Bernama. A viral video showed crowds at BSI at 5.30 am due to the halted bus services. Reports suggest the strike stemmed from drivers' dissatisfaction over salary adjustments and allowance cuts, allegedly reducing their monthly pay from RM2,800-RM2,900 to below RM2,000. Another passenger, K. Ramesh, 40, called the situation 'ridiculous,' urging the bus company to resolve the issue swiftly. 'This affects our daily routine and careers,' he said. Bus driver Atoi, 35, confirmed about 100 drivers began striking at 5 am in protest. By evening, services resumed, with no further disruptions observed. Johor Public Works Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh confirmed the incident, having monitored operations with Singapore's LTA and bus operators earlier. – Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul welcomed the Chair of Indonesia's People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), Ahmad Muzani, at Parliament House today. The meeting reinforced the longstanding diplomatic ties between Malaysia and Indonesia within ASEAN. According to a statement from the Malaysian Parliament, the discussions centered on enhancing parliamentary diplomacy to foster stronger people-to-people connections and regional prosperity. 'This meeting also laid the groundwork for closer cooperation between the two Parliaments ahead of Malaysia's leadership of the 46th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) from September 17 to 22, 2025,' the statement said. Johari highlighted the importance of joint efforts in nurturing ASEAN youth leadership through exchange programmes and cross-border initiatives. 'Developing young leaders capable of addressing global challenges is crucial for the region's future,' he said. Ahmad Muzani provided updates on Indonesia's new capital, Nusantara, in Kalimantan, which Johari acknowledged as a significant economic catalyst. 'This project presents opportunities for bilateral collaborations that will benefit both nations,' Johari added. – Bernama

Bus services back to normal at BSI after salary misunderstanding resolved

JOHOR BARU: A miscommunication regarding salary calculations with a group of Causeway Link drivers caused a brief disruption to bus services at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) complex this morning. The company issued a public apology, saying it appreciated the public's patience and understanding during the 45-minute interruption, which began about 7am today. In a brief statement today, Causeway Link confirmed the matter has been fully resolved and operations have since returned to normal. Earlier, the New Straits Times reported that thousands of Malaysian workers commuting to Singapore were left stranded when about 100 bus drivers abruptly staged a strike over alleged pay cuts. With no bus drivers in sight, some commuters were forced to trek the 1.05km stretch from Johor Bahru to Singapore on foot. The drivers had abandoned the buses with the doors shut at the complex. "The company has consistently upheld the practice of timely and accurate salary payments," the statement said, adding that measures are being taken to improve internal communication and avoid a repeat of such incidents. The Sultan Iskandar Building, among the world's busiest land checkpoints, serves hundreds of thousands of daily travellers, many of whom commute between Johor and Singapore. The company reiterated its commitment to fair, performance-based compensation and respectful engagement with its workforce.
