The film is renowned for its visual artistry and its evocative score
Period drama enthusiasts have mere days remaining to watch a critically acclaimed film lauded for its sophisticated direction and breathtaking visuals before it disappears from BBC iPlayer.

Atonement (2007) brings Ian McEwan's best-selling novel to life on screen.

Against the setting of pre-war Britain and the Second World War, the tale unfolds in 1935 at a grand country house where a solitary misinterpretation by young Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan) wreaks havoc on her elder sister Cecilia (Keira Knightley) and Cecilia's beloved Robbie Turner (James McAvoy).

Briony's fabricated allegation leads to Robbie's incarceration and eventual military service.
The story then traces each character through wartime chaos and decades of remorse and isolation, delving into themes of romance, shame and the quest for forgiveness, reports the Express.

Under Joe Wright's direction, Atonement boasts a distinguished ensemble featuring James McAvoy as Robbie Turner, Keira Knightley as Cecilia Tallis, Saoirse Ronan as Briony Tallis (alongside Romola Garai and Vanessa Redgrave playing mature versions), Brenda Blethyn, Benedict Cumberbatch and Juno Temple.
The picture is celebrated for its artistic brilliance - "flawless direction and cinematography that is nothing short of sublime," as one critic noted on film review site Rotten Tomatoes - and features the legendary five-minute continuous shot across Dunkirk beach.
Atonement's haunting musical composition by Dario Marianelli consistently receives widespread acclaim. As another review notes: "The soundtrack, the acting, the cinematography is just masterful... If you want to experience what a great piece of considered cinema looks like, this is it."

Atonement garnered universal praise from critics when it hit cinemas.
The film scooped the Oscar for Best Original Score (Dario Marianelli), two BAFTAs including Best Production Design, and a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Drama.
The movie secured seven Academy Award nominations altogether - including Best Picture - and catapulted Saoirse Ronan to international stardom.
"If you enjoy yearning, heartbreak, and crying into your pillow at 2 AM, Atonement is the film for you... By the end, you'll be staring at the screen, tear-streaked and questioning life... A masterpiece in pain", one devoted viewer declared.
Atonement will be removed from the BBC iPlayer catalogue on Thursday, August 8.

Amazon Prime's 'traumatising' remake of classic earns lowest Rotten Tomatoes score

An Amazon Prime remake of the classic sci-fi War of the Worlds has managed to get the lowest-possible score on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning it has been universally panned An Amazon Prime remake of a classic sci-fi film has earned the lowest-possible score on Rotten Tomatoes. The streaming platform's new version of War of the World stars Ice Cube and Eva Longoria, but even having two massive names attached to it did not help things when it came to impressing fans of the original. ‌ On the review-aggregation website, which attracts nearly 80 million film and TV fans on a monthly basis, not one of the 13 reviews is positive and it has therefore been left with a rating of 0%. User ExxtraZY wrote: "I am traumatised. Not because of how graphic it is, but how awful it is. It feels like a 10 year old had a fever dream and decided to write the story at the top of their head." ‌ Another reviewer said: "The butchered one of the greatest sci-fi stories mankind has ever told. Just horrible. Bad writing," and another fumed: "This movie could either be considered a glorified Amazon Ad or a really, really, really bad movie." It comes after one Mirror writer claimed 'the new Bonnie Blue documentary may be the worst thing I've ever seen on Channel 4'. ‌ A fourth reviewer said: "Stayed 20 minutes longer than I should have because of Ice Cube. But even he couldn't save this disaster of an adaptation," whilst one social media user took to X to write: "This new War of the Worlds movie might be the worst movie I have seen in years." Despite this, some fans who had watched the movie felt that they could defend it. One wrote: "I felt the story was strong enough to suspend belief. I didn't care too much about the special effects, I cared about are the kids going to be OK and how this story is different from the many other renditions I have seen," and another said: "Ok so I am gonna buck the system here. I truly enjoyed WAR OF THE WORLDS. I thought Ice Cube was great – loved the entire cast. Eva Longoria – great. Loved the kids. What is the problem here??" ‌ One irate viewer took to X to vent: "War of the Worlds (2025) is the worst adaption of the source material to date. It had no ideas beyond the found footage approach, and even then the film is struggling to find ways to present coherent scenes. "Ice Cube is so lost. Maybe one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Most of the film just doesn't make sense because they're trying to rush through a mountain of developments. The latest version of War of the Worlds, which focuses on an attempted alien invasion, was released last week on the streaming service. But the original novel by HG Wells was published in 1898, and the story has been adapted for the screen multiple times. ‌ After first being broadcast on the radio in the late 1930s, three film adaptations were releases from 1953 and 1981. In 2005, Tom Cruise starred alongside a young Dakota Fanning in a modern remake of the Victorian classic. There is also Jeff Wayne's musical adaptation, which has toured the country regularly for nearly two decades and has recently featured the likes of Jason Donovan, Steps star Claire Richards, former EastEnders actress Maisie Smith and The Wanted's Max George stepping into its main roles over the years. The synopsis for the latest incarnation of the story reads: "'A gargantuan invasion is coming with this fresh take on the legendary novel of the same name. Renowned actress Eva Longoria is joined by iconic rapper and actor Ice Cube, along with Michael O'Neill and Iman Benson, for a thrilling out-of-this-world adventure that is filled with present-day themes of technology, surveillance, and privacy."

Halle Berry subtly flashes fans with nude selfie amid life-changing road trip

X-Men star Halle Berry has been giving fans insights into a road trip in the US with her family lately, including having posted about taking care of her body at a spa recently Actor Halle Berry shared a photo of herself on social media this week in which she appeared to be topless. It showed her posing for a selfie in a bathroom mirror whilst at a spa, with a reflection elsewhere showing more of her body. ‌ Halle, 58, has been sharing updates after embarking on a "monster road trip" of the US. Joined by her family, including her partner Van Hunt, 55, she has been posting about the vacation, having already visited parts of Arizona and Utah. ‌ Over the last few days, the Oscar winner has been sharing content on Instagram from their time at Amangiri Resort in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. It's included Halle posting about enjoying a spa day at the resort recently. ‌ One post featured a series of photos from the experience. One showed Halle in a robe, whilst others showcased the spa facilities at the location. Another showed her posing in a bathroom, with her head and arm visible in a mirror. Reflections in faucets above the sink however appeared to show more of Halle's seemingly naked body. Some fans have since pointed it out in the comments section. Her partner Van has also reacted to the photo of her, with the singer writing beside a heart-eyed emoji: "3 got me geeked." ‌ Halle shared in the caption of the post that she was taking care of her body. Alongside the photos, accompanied by Doechii's song BLOOM, she wrote: "And then ... we spa! Taking care of my body. It's the only place I have to live!" Halle has been posting about her road trip on the platform lately. She teased two weeks ago that the "next adventure" would see her family face their "fears" and "grow for real," before sharing updates over their activities since then. ‌ Just last week, she told her followers that they had been at the Hoodoo Trail. Halle included a series of photos in her post that showed the group rock climbing together, whilst another showed the X-Men star crossing a bridge. She wrote in the caption: "When we the last time you faced your fears? We climbed Hoodoo canyon and came face to face with ours." Halle, who used Katy Perry 's song This Is How We Do in the post, concluded: "This is how we do!" More recently, over the weekend, Halle shared that she had made a realisation whilst on the road trip. She wrote in a caption: "Have you ever been on a trip where you were so at peace that the universes offered you a surprise realization! That just happened to me ya'll. Thank you universe." ‌ It accompanied a photo that featured a message for her followers. It read: "Heaven operates in times and seasons, not calendars. Spiritually, when you outstay your welcome in a former version of yourself or a former assignment, the grace for that cycle begins to dry up." The message that was included in her post three days ago continued: "You'll notice that things that used to work no longer work. That doors that used to open are now closed. The patterns you once relied on, now begin to frustrate you. "So when God allows everything to hit you at once, it's not punishment. It's a mass exit of expired alignments. He's allowing the collapse of things that were secretly limiting you, even if they were once blessings."

Great British Sewing Bee viewers issue same complaint as they spot huge format flaw

Great British Sewing Bee viewers issue same complaint as they spot huge format flaw Tuesday's episode of The Great British Sewing Bee was centred around Korean garments. The Great British Sewing Bee viewers issued the same complaint as they spotted a huge format flaw. ‌ During Tuesday's (August 5) episode of the hit BBC reality show, judges Esme Young and Patrick Grant set the contestants three challenges that celebrated the rich fashion and textile traditions of Korea. ‌ They were also joined by award-winning designer Eudon Choi, who helped them examine each Korean-inspired item. ‌ For the pattern challenge, the sewers had to create a jeogori - a historic Korean jacket that's now seen in contemporary womenswear and K-Pop. The contestants then had to transform taekwondo outfits and colourful belts into striking new creations, with Kit coming in first place. Tuesday's episode was inspired by Korean fashion (Image: BBC) ‌ In the made-to-measure challenge, the sewers were tasked with designing evening wear inspired by a garment once worn by Korean military officials. Born in the 900s during the Goryeo dynasty, the cheollik started as a military coat built for movement and authority with a flat collar, pleats and ties. Over centuries, it's evolved from rugged menswear into elegant womenswear. ‌ The contestants were given five hours for the project, after being able to practice their items at home. After failing to impress the judges with her creations, Novello was eliminated from the competition, while Caz received the garment of the week. 66-year-old sewer Novello was eliminated (Image: BBC) ‌ "It's okay, I expected it," Novello said after her exit. "Sewing has always been in my life, and this experience has blown it out of the water, really. It's just something that I will remember and treasure always." However, after watching the episode, many of the show's viewers shared their frustration at the lack of time the sewers get during each challenge. Article continues below "I know it's a competition, but can't they give them a little more time? It's nicer to judge finished garments," one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Another added: "I know they have to weed out the worst sewers, but give them a bit more time," while a third said: "They defo need more time." The Great British Sewing Bee is available to stream on BBC iPlayer
