Gujarat CM felicitates newly elected sarpanches, warns them against being misguided towards corruption
Addressing a function in Gandhinagar to felicitate the newly elected Sarpanches and members of gram panchayats, the CM said, 'The governments of the state and Centre allocate sufficient money for the development of villages. Today, by allocating a grant of Rs 1,236 to the gram panchayats, (the government has) attained the resolve of fulfilling what is promised. This money, Rs 1,236 crore, too, will go to the accounts of you all.'
He further said, 'Since I have talked about money, let me tell you that it is not worth it to run after money. Else, you know that there is zero tolerance currently… No one has been spared once caught and no one will be spared in the future as well. All of you are new, so you should be careful that nobody misguides you.'
Referring to the recently held elections of gram panchayats, the CM said that they have broken all the records.
'As per the information I have, this time, the number of Sarpanches in the age group of 21-40 is 42%. Among them, the number of Sarpanches below the age of 30 are 616 while 1,341 of them are between the age of 31 and 40. As many as 1,337 Sarpanches are between the ages of 41 and 50, while 1,326 are above 50 years old… And one of them, sitting here, has done Ph D,' CM Patel said.
In May, the Gujarat State Election Commission had declared elections to 4,564 gram panchayats in the state. Out of them, 761 have emerged as Samras Gram Panchayats where the villagers chose their Sarpanch and ward members through consensus; 56 of them are Mahila Samras Gram Panchayats.
On Friday, as the newly elected Sarpanches and ward members were felicitated, the CM also disbursed over Rs 35 crore to the Samras Gram Panchayats for village development.
On the occasion, the CM announced a decision of the government to double the allocation of funds for cleanliness in villages. He said that the allocation of Rs 4 per person for cleanliness in a village has been hiked to Rs 4 per person.
Held at Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre in Gandhinagar, the function was also attended by Union Minister for Jal Shakti and Gujarat BJP Chief C R Paatil, Rural Development ministers Raghavji Patel and Kunvarji Halpati, among others.
Addressing the function, Paatil asked the newly elected Sarpanches and panchayat members to take up the responsibility of cleanliness and water conservation in their respective villages. Paatil said through water conservation, his ministry wants to bring out 150 districts of the country from the tag of dark zones.
Earlier in the day, Union Minister for Jal Shakti C R Paatil also inaugurated a Solar Frame Plant of a private company, H&H Aluminium Private Limited, in Rajkot. Paatil virtually inaugurated the plant from a function in Ahmedabad. Addressing the gathering, Paatil called upon the industries to come forward in complementing the government's efforts towards water conservation by recharging the groundwater level.

US arrests Nirav Modi's brother Nehal in extradition case
NEW DELHI: In an important development, Nehal Modi - brother of fugitive Nirav Modi and one of the key accused in the Punjab National Bank's Rs 13,500 crore swindle and the related money laundering case - was arrested by US authorities from New York on Friday in an extradition case filed by ED and CBI. In the PNB money laundering case, the main accused - Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi - were earlier arrested in the UK and Belgium, respectively, on India's extradition request and pending Red Corner Notices. They are currently in prison and have been denied bail till pendency of their extradition proceedings. Sources said the US department of justice has informed Indian authorities about Nehal's arrest and has also conveyed that it would oppose his bail application when it comes up in court on July 17. "As per the complaint filed by the US prosecution, extradition proceedings are being pursued on two counts: one count of money laundering under the PMLA and one count of criminal conspiracy under the IPC," sources said. According to chargesheets filed by ED earlier, Nehal played a key role in laundering proceeds of crime on behalf of his brother, Nirav. "He assisted in concealing and transferring large sums of illicit funds through a web of shell companies and overseas transactions," ED alleged in the chargesheet. On his alleged role, sources said Nehal was personally overseeing that all the accounts and records were destroyed, and was influencing employees/witnesses to conceal money trail and proceeds of crime. ED's evidence against Nehal includes his "footprint" in laundering huge stockpiles of gold, diamonds and cash consignments from Dubai and Hong Kong-based entities of Nirav. According to charges levelled by the agencies, Nehal, after the scam was unearthed, took away diamonds worth $6 million and 150 boxes of pearls from Hong Kong, huge cash, including AED 150 million and 50kg gold from Dubai, and laundered them in safe havens. "He destroyed digital evidence (mobile phones and servers) pertaining to the Nirav Modi case in Dubai and intimidated witnesses, sent them to Cairo, and destroyed their passports so that they cannot travel," sources said. The development also represents coordination between Indian agencies and their US counterparts. Officials of ED and CBI will hold a "status conference" with the US prosecution on the nature of crime and charges slapped against him in India for laundering proceeds of crime. The details of non-bailable warrants against him and cognisance of chargesheets taken by the special courts would also be conveyed to the prosecution service. Agencies, in their multiple chargesheets filed in the PNB case during 2018 and 2019, have levelled serious allegations against Nehal - of destroying evidence and laundering proceeds of crime on behalf of his brother. ED has attached Rs 2,700 crore worth of assets so far in this case in India and abroad. Nirav, Mehul and Nehal are among 34 persons/companies accused in the case.

Ex-MLA Abbas Ansari's pleaagainst conviction rejected
1 2 Varanasi: Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (Gangster/MP-MLA Court) in Mau district on Saturday dismissed appeal of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari 's son and former MLA, Abbas Ansari, against his conviction in a 2022 hate speech case. The court, however, while granting bail to Ansari and co-accused Mansoor, allowed further hearing on Jul 25 of the plea challenging the quantum of punishment awarded to Ansari by the CJM (MP-MLA) court . The decision keeps up Ansari camp's hope alive regarding restoration of his Assembly membership, which was terminated after the CJM court sentenced him to two years' imprisonment on May 31. Abbas was sentenced for delivering a hate speech at a public meeting in Pahadpur during electioneering in Mar 2022 when he contested as a Samajwadi Party-Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party alliance candidate for the Mau Sadar assembly seat. After the court delivered its order on Saturday, Ansari's advocate, Daroga Singh, said, "Additional District and Sessions Judge (Gangster/MP-MLA Court) Rajeev Kumar Vats dismissed our appeal challenging the conviction in this case. However, it continued the stay against the quantum of punishment sentenced by the CJM (MP-MLA) court and fixed Jul 25 as next date for further hearing. The CJM court sentenced the maximum punishment, which we challenged at the session court. On the basis of facts, we have challenged it. Since court has full authority to minimise quantum of punishment or even cancel it, hope for justice is alive." Ansari lost his assembly membership when the CJM (MP-MLA) court of Mau on May 31 awarded him two years' imprisonment in the case of hate speech lodged against him on Mar 4, 2022. While contesting the assembly election from the Mau Sadar seat, Ansari, in his Paharpur public meeting speech, targeted a govt officer on Mar 3, 2022, and its video went viral on social media, leading to lodging of the case the next day. The co-accused, Mansoor, who was proposer of Ansari in the 2022 assembly election, was awarded similar punishment. Ansari emerged victorious in 2022 assembly polls from the Mau Sadar seat as a Samajwadi Party-Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party alliance candidate, but went behind bars following arrest by Prayagraj unit of enforcement directorate in a money laundering case in Feb 2023. He was released from jail in March this year.
