Cong criticises Union govt for price hike of fertilisers
Speaking to reporters in Shivamogga, he said, "Farmers are struggling to cultivate paddy in the state due to the rapid price hike of fertilisers. He questioned whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi truly supports the agricultural community.
Meanwhile, the Youth Congress, Shivamogga unit, strongly condemned the BJP govt's decision to increase chemical and fertiliser prices, which they believe will further burden farmers.
They staged a protest in Shivamogga and alleged that the Union govt is giving farmers Rs 6,000 per year as Kisan Samman but collecting double that amount through increased prices of fertilisers and seeds. With farmers already struggling due to uncertain rainfall and crop damage, the price hike will exacerbate their distress.
The Youth Congress urged the President to intervene and direct the Union govt to reduce fertiliser prices. If not, they threatened to take the protest to the streets. The memorandum was submitted through the joint director of agriculture in Shivamogga on Monday morning.

No alliance at the top, but Congress, AAP discuss strategy ahead of Goa assembly session
Even though Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal has announced that there would be no alliance with the Congress, local leaders of the two parties have come together to coordinate the opposition's strategy ahead of the monsoon session of the Goa assembly. The session will be held from July 21 to August 8. Congress and AAP MLAs attended a meeting called by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on July 15, while the leaders of other opposition parties including the Goa Forward Party and Revolutionary Goans Party remained absent. "I convened a meeting with the opposition MLAs, including AAP MLAs Venzy Viegas and Cruz Silva, and Congress's Carlos Alvares Ferreira and Altone D'Costa," Mr. Alemao said in a statement. The purpose was to draw up the opposition's strategy, he said. "The discussion was productive, with valuable inputs from MLAs Venzy Viegas, Carlos, Altone and Cruz on how to hold the BJP government accountable," said Mr. Alemao who belongs to the Congress. "We are united in our determination to protect Goa from the corrupt BJP government's clutches," he added. Congress MLAs have submitted over 750 Legislative Assembly Questions (LAQs) for the session, Mr. Alemao said. AAP Goa president Amit Palekar said to attend the meeting was the decision of the legislative wing of his party. The AAP and Congress have decided to demand accountability from the BJP government on the floor of the House, he said, adding that a collective strategy was decided for the sake of the people of Goa. In a joint statement issued on Tuesday (July 15, 2025), AAP MLAs Viegas and Silva said, "United we stand for Goa's justice. For meaningful change in the assembly, AAP and opposition parties must align their political and legislative wings. Common political discipline and collective action should happen."

Madhya Pradesh's U-Turn On 90-Degree Bridge Blunder
After a public outcry over bizarrely angled designs - a bridge with two 90-degree turns in Indore and a flyover in Bhopal that looked more like an origami experiment - the Public Works Department (PWD) of the Madhya Pradesh government hit the brakes. They issued a new circular, saying no project has been halted after it scrapped the General Arrangement Drawings (GADs) of 355 projects, including 140 under-construction flyovers, railway overbridges (ROBs), and elevated corridors worth Rs 1,200 crores. As the engineers and contractors were preparing to halt the construction of these projects, the PWD decided to re-engineer its own decision. The department revoked the order, claiming it was a "mistake." Chief Engineer PC Verma, who had earlier signed the cancellation, said, "The order was issued by mistake." Meanwhile, a new circular states no project has been halted. The department said it was only tightening bolts on quality control and technical oversight, not slamming brakes on construction. The PWD has sought a detailed report from all districts (PWD offices) about the actual status as well as the design of all existing and proposed bridges. In response to growing criticism, the state formed a high-level technical committee. This committee will now examine every nook, curve, and angle of all existing and under-construction flyovers and railway overbridges. From design and alignment to height, speed limits, and safety norms - nothing will get through without a solid pass. This panel includes PWD's Chief Engineer (Buildings and Roads), Chief Engineer (Setu Parikshetra), Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation's (MPRDC) Chief Engineer, and officials from the Railway and the Municipal Corporation. Experts from outside the government may also be called in. Additionally, the government has mandated departmental exams for engineers. Executive Engineers, AEs, and Sub-Engineers must appear for tests after August 15, and their postings will now depend on their marks. They also appointed a Technical Advisor of MPRDC to collaborate with the Indian Academy for Highway Engineering to develop a training module for engineers, who will now have to study Indian Roads Congress (IRC) codes and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) guidelines. Two weeks ago, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav ordered action against those responsible for the infamous 90-degree Aishbagh ROB in Bhopal. Eight engineers, including two Chief Engineers, were suspended; a departmental inquiry is also being initiated against a retired Superintending Engineer. The construction agency and the design consultant behind the faulty blueprint have been blacklisted, and the bridge will only be inaugurated post-correction.

Haryana: Kaithal farmer hails PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana
Kaithal: As the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the 'Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana', farmers across the country have started welcoming the move. Indra Singh, a farmer from Kaithal, Haryana, said on Wednesday that the scheme is a much-needed step and will bring direct benefits to the farming community. Speaking to IANS, Indra Singh expressed optimism: "With the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Yojana, the government is doing good work for us. Proper irrigation through underground pipelines will help prevent water wastage. If crop storage is made available at the village level, it will ease our burden. Transporting crops is costly, and sometimes tractor owners charge high rents. This scheme will help cover those expenses." He further added that access to affordable loans through government channels would be a game-changer for small farmers. "Middlemen charge us high interest and often delay repayments. But with this scheme, loans from the government will be cheaper and easier to access. It will reduce our dependency on local moneylenders," he told IANS. The Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana, set to begin in 2025-26, will run for six years and cover 100 districts across India. It draws inspiration from NITI Aayog's Aspirational Districts Programme and focuses exclusively on agriculture and allied sectors. It aims to enhance agricultural productivity, increase adoption of crop diversification and sustainable agricultural practices, augment post-harvest storage at the panchayat and block levels, improve irrigation facilities and facilitate availability of long-term and short-term credit, according to the official statement. The scheme will be implemented through the convergence of 36 existing schemes across 11 departments, other state schemes and local partnerships with the private sector. As many as 100 districts will be identified based on three key indicators of low productivity, low cropping intensity, and less credit disbursement. The number of districts in each state/UT will be based on the share of Net Cropped Area and operational holdings. However, a minimum of 1 district will be selected from each state, according to an official statement. Committees will be formed at the District, State and National level for effective planning, implementation and monitoring of the Scheme. A District Agriculture and Allied Activities Plan will be finalised by the District Dhan Dhaanya Samiti, which will also have progressive farmers as members. The District Plans will be aligned to the national goals of crop diversification, conservation of water and soil health, self-sufficiency in agriculture and allied sectors, as well as expansion of natural and organic farming. The progress of the scheme in each Dhan-Dhaanya district will be monitored on 117 key Performance Indicators through a dashboard monthly. NITI Aayog will also review and guide the district plans. Besides, Central Nodal Officers appointed for each district will also review the scheme regularly, the statement explained.
