Soccer-Caruso steers Italy to 1-0 win over Belgium in Women's Euro 2025
Soccer Football - UEFA Women's Euro 2025 - Group B - Belgium v Italy - Stade de Tourbillon, Sion, Switzerland - July 3, 2025 Italy's Arianna Caruso collides with Italy's Elisabetta Oliviero REUTERS/Matthew Childs SION, Switzerland (Reuters) -Italy won their first match in the Women's European Championship since 2017 as Arianna Caruso struck just before the break to give them a 1-0 win over Belgium in their Group B opener on Thursday. Lucia Di Guglielmo's quick pass from the right found Caruso unguarded just outside the box and the Bayern Munich midfielder calmly curled a right-footed shot away from keeper Lisa Lichtfus to find the net by the near post. Caruso probed the Belgian defence with multiple attempts in the first 20 minutes, after the match began with a minute's silence following the death of Portuguese national men's team striker Diogo Jota in a car accident. Belgium had more of the ball in the first half and made 10 attempts, two more than Italy, but failed to take the lead when Mariam Toloba shot wide in the 26th minute and Tessa Wullaert missed the target from close range four minutes before Caruso's goal. Lichtfus's quick reflexes saved Cristiana Girelli's close range back-flick in the 64th minute to keep Belgium in the game, but the 2022 quarter-finalists were unable to find an equaliser as Italy made their first winning start in the tournament since 2009. Italy will continue their campaign against Portugal on Monday, while Belgium play Nations League winners Spain. (Reporting by Chiranjit Ojha in Bengaluru; editing by Clare Fallon)

Blowout suspected in crash that claimed lives of Diogo Jota and brother
CERNADILLA, Spain: Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, were killed in a single-car accident near Zamora, Spain, police said Thursday. Jota, a Portuguese international, was 28. Silva was 26. Multiple reports said the siblings were found dead after their Lamborghini went off the road on an isolated stretch of highway. Police said the car was in flames upon arrival. A Spanish Civil Guard spokesperson said it is believed that the driver lost control after a tyre blew out, per ESPN. It was not immediately clear who was driving the car. Jota helped Liverpool capture the Premier League championship last season. He also helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League last month. "We have lost two champions. Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day," the Portuguese Football Federation said in a statement. Jota recorded 65 goals and 26 assists in 182 appearances for Liverpool since arriving from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020. He married his wife, Rute Cardoso, last month. They have three children. Cristiano Ronaldo, Jota's teammate with Portugal, sent his condolences to the brothers' family. "It doesn't make sense. We were just together with the national team, you had just got married," Ronaldo wrote in Portuguese in a post on social media. "To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you." Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, who is a minority owner of Liverpool FC, also took to social media in response to the news. "My prayers goes out to his loved ones during this time! May you all be guided and protected! YNWA JOTA!!" he wrote. The Premier League also released a statement on social media. "Everyone at the Premier League is shocked and devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre," the statement read. "Our sincerest condolences go to Diogo's family, friends, Liverpool FC, and all their supporters at this heartbreaking time. Football has lost a champion who will be forever missed. We will continue to support our friends and colleagues at the club." - Field Level Media/Reuters
