MLAs oppose 11.30 p.m. deadline for festival celebrations in Dakshina Kannada
Y. Bharat Shetty, Mangaluru City North MLA, raised the matter at the Dakshina Kannada District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (Disha) meeting, presided over by Capt. Brijesh Chowta, MP.
Dr. Shetty also opposed the police instructing the event organisers to install a sufficient number of CCTV cameras and retain the footage for 30 days.
Dr. Shetty and D. Vedavyasa Kamath, Mangaluru City North MLA, stated that the deadline imposed by the police would undermine the spirit of 'Mosaru Kudike' celebrations during Sri Krishna Janmashtami and the immersion processions of idols during Ganeshotsava and Navaratri.
'The deadline is like not allowing vehicles on the road because accidents happen,' Mr. Kamath said.
Mr. Kamath said that the Dasara procession of Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple is held all night. 'Will the police stop it?' he asked.
Bhagirathi Murulya, MLA, Sullia, questioned the government, asking schools, including both government and private ones, not to spare their premises for religious public programmes, such as the Ganesha festival.
Mr. Kamath said that in some government schools, the Ganesha festival has been celebrated as a public event by worshipping the Ganesha idol for the past 50 years. It is not proper to stop such celebrations.
The MLAs asked Deputy Commissioner H.V. Darshan to direct the police to lift the cap.
It may be mentioned here that, besides making it mandatory for organisers of public events and processions to obtain permission from the police and other concerned departments, the Mangaluru City and Dakshina Kannada district police stated on July 3 that no event will be permitted beyond 11:30 p.m. during the soon-approaching festival season.
The police released detailed guidelines for conducting events ahead of Muharram (July 6), Janmashtami and 'Mosaru Kudike' (August 16), Ganesh Chaturthi (August 27), Navaratri, Deepavali, and Christmas, lined up in the coming days, to ensure public safety, peace, and adherence to the law. 'Event-specific detailed instructions, including routes, timings, sound, etc., would be issued for each event, and organisers should provide their details,' Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy and Superintendent of Police K. Arun said.
Organisers must obtain a no-objection certificate from the venue owner if the event is being held in a private venue. 'Events held beyond 11.30 p.m. would be treated as 'unlawful assembly',' the police said. Events should be organised at approved locations and on approved routes, they said.

DISHA committee seeks Central probe into Jal Jeevan Mission pipelines in East Godavari
The East Godavari District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) led by Rajamahendravaram Member of Parliament D. Purandeswari on Tuesday decided to ask the Centre to probe into the poor quality of pipelines laid across the district under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JLM). The DISHA committee on Tuesday met for the first time in the current financial year and reviewed the implementation of the Centrally-sponsored prorgrammes and discussed key issues associated with the Central government. The committee comprises MP, MLAs and District Collector. Speaking to the media after the committee meeting, Ms. Purandeswari said: 'MLAs of the respective assembly constituencies have complained about irregularities in the pipelines laid across the district under the Jal Jeevan Mission. We have decided to ask the Centre to probe into the matter.' Market for organic products Ms. Purandeswari also stated that the committee has decided to appeal to the Centre to connect any one of the markets in the district to eNAM (National Agriculture Market), exclusively dedicated for marketing of organic products in the East Godavari district. The committee has further proposed to appeal the centre for the increase in the man-days of work under the NREGA. The respective officials have been given a target to increase the number of Farmers' Producers Organisations (FPO). Currently, there are 10 FPOs in the East Godavari district. The issues discussed in the meeting would be sent to the respective Ministries at the Centre. MLC Somu Veerraju, Rajanagaram MLA Battula Balarama Krishna and other MLAs were present.

Demand for renaming Dakshina Kannada as Mangaluru district gains momentum
A collective demand to rename Dakshina Kannada district as Mangaluru district was made on Tuesday, a few days after the State Cabinet approved renaming Ramanagar district as Bengaluru South and Bagepalli taluk in Chikkaballapura district as Bhagya Nagar. Dakshina Kannada District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting, presided over by Capt. Brijesh Chowta, MP, on Tuesday, resolved to urge the State government to rename Dakshina Kannada as Mangaluru district. Raising the matter in the meeting, Harish Poonja, Belthangady MLA, said that the people of Dakshina Kannada always introduced themselves as ones belonging to Mangaluru, and others even recognised them as such. There is a demand from the people to rename the district as Mangaluru. MLAs Y. Bharat Shetty, D. Vedavyasa Kamath, Umanath Kotian, Bhagirathi Murlya, and MLC Prathapsimha Nayak, along with other elected representatives and nominated members of the committee, concurred with the demand raised by Mr. Poonja. Capt. Chowta told the meeting that the resolution of the committee would be sent to the government. Samithi pitches in Earlier, Mangaluru Zilla Tulupara Horata Samithi demanded that the district be named Mangaluru. Speaking to press persons on behalf of the Samithi, a former president of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, Dayanand Kattalsar, said that the Portuguese and British named the region as 'Canara' and later called it 'South Canara' which later became Dakshina Kannada and it does not gel well with native culture and ethos. Mr. Kattalsar said there were historical references to the region as Mangaluru. There were some old 'Paddanas' (sung narratives) referring to the region as 'Mangara'. Like-minded people formed Mangaluru Zilla Tulupara Horata Samiti to take forward the demand, he said. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) general secretary Rakshith Shivaram said the airport and seaport were named after Mangaluru. The buns (a snack) of the coastal region were popular as Mangaluru buns, while the tiles manufactured in the coastal belt were known as Mangaluru tiles. Former Mangaluru City North MLA B.A. Mohiuddin Bava stated that the Samithi had taken up the matter of renaming Dakshina Kannada after the State government recently approved the renaming of Ramanagar district and Bagepalli taluk. Former Mangaluru City Corporation councillor Kiran Kodical and former president of the Dakshina Kannada Bus Owners Association, Dilraj Alva, also demanded the renaming of the district. In a statement issued on July 5 in support of the demand, Mangaluru City South MLA D. Vedavyasa Kamath said that renaming the district as Mangaluru would give fresh impetus to the ongoing fight for primacy for Tulu. A legal fight would be taken up to rename the district after its local name, just as many places in the country have done. The State government should favourably respond to the demand, the MLA said.
