Maharashtra report card: 12 of 48 govt depts score perfect 100, eight below 60 per cent
The performance of eight departments was below 60 per cent. Atleast three departments—General Administration (24 per cent), Urban Development (34 per cent) and Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs (33 per cent)—which recorded poor performance are held by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar respectively.
Fadnavis had set an ambitious target for each department to complete their works in the first 100 days after he took oath of office on December 5 last year. The objective was to expedite the administrative machinery, making it more transparent and accountable and according top priority to citizen services.
Underlying these initiatives was an attempt to measure the outcome of every department and assess how much each of them delivered on promises and programmes within the stipulated timeline. It was to inculcate a work culture where administrative index based on parameters drawn would be periodically measured to see how fast and what was delivered within the time frame.
Fadnavis took to social media platform X to disclose department-wise performance statistics. He stated that 12 departments successfully fulfilled all of their designated objectives. These include Water Resources, Home, Rural Development, Animal Husbandry, Ports, Higher and Technical Education, Labour, Textiles, Cultural Affairs, Mining, Dairy Development and the Employment Guarantee Scheme.
There are 18 departments whose performance is above 80 per cent—Energy, Industry, Revenue, Transport, School education, Food and drugs administration, Aviation, Skill development, Woman and Child Development, Agriculture, Fisheries, Urban Development (2), Medical Education, Information and technology, Cooperation, Excise and public health.
There are 10 departments whose performance index is in the range of 60 to 80 per cent—Marathi bhasha, public works department, Supply and Sanitation, Tourism, Housing, Social Justice, Water and soil conservation, Sports and youths welfare, Tribal welfare and Environment.

MNS holds ‘Marathi pride' rally; Sena Minister gets heckled
Tensions continued in Mira-Bhayandar town of Maharashtra's Thane district as the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena (UBT) workers held a march on Tuesday in support of Marathi 'asmita' (pride). The rally was organised in response to a traders' rally held on Saturday to protest against a sweet shop owner being slapped by MNS workers for not speaking in Marathi. Opposition parties held Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Home Department accountable for fuelling the issue by 'denying the democratic right to hold a rally'. However, Mr. Fadnavis rejected the claim that permission wasn't granted. 'The party [MNS] was asked to take a different route,' he said, also adding that permission sought for holding a gathering late Monday night was granted as well. Opposition leaders Aaditya Thackeray of Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule criticised the government's handling of the situation. 'The Home Department and the Chief Minister are solely responsible for the chaos,' said Ms. Sule. DCP Gaikwad said the MNS rally intended to pass through the Balaji Hotel area of Mira-Bhayandar where the slapping incident had taken place and hence an alternative route was suggested. The party, however, proceeded with the march from Balaji Hotel in the presence of heavy police security, raising slogans of 'M for Marathi, M for Mumbai, M for Mira-Bhayandar, and M for Maharashtra'. It concluded at Mira Road railway station around 2.30 p.m. Maharashtra Minister Pratap Sarnaik, of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, went to participate in the protest but was heckled as 'traitor' and forced to leave the spot. Meanwhile, Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Tuesday targeted CM Fadnavis and Mr. Shinde, questioning their 'silence' over BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's veiled threat to MNS chief Raj Thackeray and Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray amid the ongoing language row in Maharashtra and attacks on non-Marathi-speaking people. The CM dubbed his party MP's comments 'inappropriate'.

Rebuilt British-Era Bridge In Mumbai Named After Operation Sindoor
Mumbai: The reconstructed Carnac Road Over Bridge (ROB) in South Mumbai has been renamed as "Sindoor Bridge", a nomenclature inspired by India's military action in May against Pakistan to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack, civic officials said on Tuesday. The British-era bridge will be inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday morning, they said. The east-west connector, earlier known as the Carnac Bridge and named after former Bombay Province governor James Rivett Carnac, who held the office from 1839 to 1841, has been rechristened as 'Sindoor Bridge' (after Operation Sindoor). A senior Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official told PTI that Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar had written to the civic body recommending the renaming of the ROB as 'Sindoor Bridge' in honour of the May 7-10 military operation against Pakistan's terror sites and air bases. In a release issued on late Tuesday evening, the BMC said Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, Narwekar, and other senior leaders and civic officials will be present at the inauguration ceremony. The bridge, which connects eastern and western parts of the Central Railway's train tracks (between Mumbai CSMT and Masjid stations) and links to P D'Mello Road, will help ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity in South Mumbai. The Sindoor Bridge was rebuilt by the BMC after the original 150-year-old structure was declared unsafe by the Central Railway (CR) and dismantled in August 2022. According to the BMC, the new structure, constructed as per a design approved by CR, spans a total length of 328 metres, including a 70-metre stretch within Railway limits, and 230 metres of approach roads on either side. It features two steel girders, each 70 metres long, 26.5 metres wide, and 10.8 metres high, weighing 550 metric tonnes, mounted on reinforced concrete piers. Work on the eastern approach, including piling, civil works, and asphalting, was completed in just four months, as per the civic body. The installation of massive girders above the Railway tracks, considered a complex civil and structural engineering feat, was carried out in October 2024 and January 2025, the release said. The reconstructed bridge has successfully undergone load testing, and the BMC has secured all necessary clearances, including structural stability certification, safety clearance, and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Railway authorities, it said. The civic body said the bridge is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion at key intersections such as Walchand Hirachand Marg and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road, and improve east-west traffic flow across important routes, including Yusuf Meherally Road, Mohammad Ali Road, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Road.

Fadnavis Greenlights Massive Recruitment in Public Univs, 100% Hiring in Govt-Aided Engineering Colleges
Nagpur: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has cleared the decks for large-scale recruitment in higher education institutions across Maharashtra. He has also approved 100% hiring in government-aided engineering colleges and the urgent filling of vacant posts in public universities and unaided colleges. The move is expected to significantly boost the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) and enhance the overall quality of higher education in the state. Chairing a high-level review meeting at the state legislature on Monday, Fadnavis directed that all sanctioned faculty and staff positions in non-agricultural public universities be filled immediately. He also approved the recruitment of 5,012 assistant professors in unaided grant-in-aid colleges under the directorate of higher education. Additionally, he sanctioned 788 teaching and 2,242 non-teaching posts across public universities. The newly established Laxminarayan Innovation Technological University (LITU) has been allotted 105 faculty positions and one equivalent teaching post. An allocation of ₹8 crore has also been approved for the university's administrative and daily operations, on par with other universities. "The recruitment process will directly impact the quality of higher education and must be expedited without delay," Fadnavis emphasized. He also announced full-scale recruitment in all government-aided engineering colleges, including VJTI Mumbai and Guru Gobindsingh Engineering College, Nanded. A revised staffing plan for 603 posts at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University (BATU) was also approved. "The number of technological universities in Maharashtra is low, and we must run them at full capacity to offer more opportunities and improve standards," Fadnavis said. In a boost to public libraries, the CM approved a 40% hike in library grants and instructed that the proposal be sent to the finance department without delay. Libraries completing 50, 75, or 100 years of service will now be eligible for special incentive grants. Fadnavis also directed the officials to consider recognizing new libraries in place of the 1,706 whose approvals were recently withdrawn. He further proposed the establishment of a dedicated Department of Science and Technology in Maharashtra. "With increasing technological integration across sectors, we need to study working models in other states and draft a framework for setting up such a department here," he said. The review meeting was attended by higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil, additional chief secretaries Venugopal Reddy (Higher education), OP Gupta (Finance), Rajgopal Deora (Planning), Saurabh (unnamed department), LITU vice-chancellor Dr Atul Vaidya, higher education director Shailendra Deolankar, and technical education director Vinod Mohitkar, among others.
