PM Anwar arrives in Rome for official visit to strengthen Malaysia-Italy ties
The aircraft carrying the Prime Minister landed at Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport at 8.20 pm (2.20 am Wednesday, Malaysia time).
On hand to welcome Anwar at the airport were Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Malaysia's Ambassador to Italy Datuk Zahid Rastam, Italian Senior Ambassador for Protocol Affairs Fabrizio Romano and former Italian Ambassador to Malaysia Massimo Rustico.
Anwar said he hoped the visit would strengthen Malaysia-Italy ties and deepen strategic cooperation, as well as to elevate ASEAN-EU engagement in a challenging global landscape.
'This visit, which comes at the invitation of my counterpart, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, reflects our shared commitment to strengthening the long-standing bilateral relationship between Malaysia and Italy based on the principles and spirit of friendship, trust and mutual respect.
'Malaysia sees Italy as an important strategic partner in the European continent and we are committed to expanding cooperation in trade and investment, defence industry and the energy transition sector,' said Anwar.
Furthermore, as ASEAN Chairman, Anwar said this visit will also enhance the value of the relationship between the Southeast Asian region and Europe in the increasingly challenging geopolitical and geoeconomic landscape.
'I am confident that this visit will open a new chapter that is more dynamic, yielding concrete benefits and taking Malaysia-Italy relations to a new and higher level,' he added.
During the visit, Anwar is accompanied by Mohamad, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.
Also part of the delegation is Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir.
Immediately upon arrival at the capital, Anwar and delegation attended a gathering with Malaysian diaspora in the country.
On July 3, the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with his counterpart at Chigi Palace.
According to Zahid, the meeting will provide an opportunity for both leaders to take stock of the current state of Malaysia-Italy relations and explore avenues to further strengthen cooperation, particularly in the fields of economy, defence technology, and energy.
The two leaders will also exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern, including the ASEAN-Italy Development Partnership, ASEAN-European Union Dialogue Relations, and the situation in the Middle East.
As ASEAN Chair for 2025, Anwar is expected to also highlight Malaysia's priorities and ASEAN's efforts in addressing regional and global challenges.
The Prime Minister will also officiate the Malaysia-Italy Economic Partnership Roundtable on Wednesday, which will bring together industry leaders from both countries to explore trade and investment collaboration.
During the business engagement event, Anwar is set to meet captains of Industry from 36 Italian firms, including multinational companies such as Leonardo SpA, STMicroelectronics and Ferrero.
Italy is the third-largest national economy in the EU and the world's eighth-largest by gross domestic product.
He is also scheduled to meet leaders of the local Muslim community.
Malaysia and Italy enjoy longstanding and multifaceted relations, underpinned by strong economic ties, growing trade and investment, and people-to-people exchanges.

PAS urges govt to review Peaceful Assembly Act

PETALING JAYA : PAS has called on the government to review the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 after the Federal Court's ruling yesterday that it is unconstitutional to criminalise the failure to notify the police five days in advance of holding a peaceful assembly. In a statement, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the ruling by a five-member Federal Court panel chaired by outgoing Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat would give Malaysians more confidence that their voices can be heard without the threat of prosecution. 'PAS also believes that this decision will further strengthen public confidence in the freedom of expression and assembly as key hallmarks of a mature and civilised democratic nation,' said Takiyuddin. 'PAS urges the government to comprehensively review the Peaceful Assembly Act so that it truly reflects the spirit of the Federal Constitution and the universal principles of human rights, especially in light of this historic decision.' Takiyuddin also urged the government to review or abolish legal provisions that could be misused to suppress freedom of expression, including the Sedition Act 1948, the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984. The Kota Bharu MP said this was consistent with Pakatan Harapan's election promises outlined in its 15th general election manifesto. Yesterday, Tengku Maimun said Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act imposes a punishment that exceeds the limits permitted under Article 10(1)(b) of the Federal Constitution, which guarantees the freedom of speech, assembly, and association. Tengku Maimun, who delivered the unanimous decision of the five-member Federal Court panel, also said the section was 'a disproportionate intervention'. The decision stemmed from a constitutional challenge brought by former Muda secretary-general Amir Hadi, who was charged in 2022 with failing to give the police five days' notice before organising a protest outside the Sogo shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur. Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the government would table an amendment to Section 11 of the Peaceful Assembly Act in the upcoming parliamentary sitting following the Federal Court's ruling. Section 11 of the Peaceful Assembly Act requires organisers of assemblies to obtain the consent of the location's owner or occupier.

Finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan said Malaysia's trade negotiators consistently highlighted the interdependence of global supply chains during engagements with their US counterparts. KUALA LUMPUR : Finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan has described the feedback received by the Malaysian government on its ongoing tariff negotiations with the US as 'positive'. He also reaffirmed Malaysia's support of a trading system that is open, multilateral and rules-based, as well as its decision not to impose retaliatory tariffs against the US. 'Malaysia's approach has always been engagement with the US to understand what the issues are and to figure out whether we can navigate the path ahead and come up with a win-win solution. 'The US has been positive in responding to Malaysia's approach, and engagement has been done where both sides have had their trade teams talk about how we can navigate the issue,' Amir said at the Invest Asean-Malaysia Conference 2025 here. He said Malaysia's trade negotiators had consistently highlighted the interdependence of global supply chains and the significant consequences of disrupting them during engagements with their US counterparts. 'Our approach has always been recognising where things are coming from. If it is not in our interest for something to be disrupted, then let's not disrupt it. 'Where there is an opportunity for liberalisation, let's look at it on the basis that there will be a win-win outcome.' On June 22, investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said Malaysia's discussions with the US Secretary of Commerce on tariff-related matters had made good progress. He said both Malaysia and US representatives had also agreed to intensify efforts to reach an agreement acceptable to key stakeholders in both countries. Malaysian exports to the US face a 24% tariff unless an agreement is reached before a 90-day suspension expires on July 8. Amir added that discussions on non-tariff barriers should not be met with outright rejection, but rather a 'let's talk about it' approach to explore whether easing certain restrictions could be mutually beneficial. 'For example, Malaysia doesn't fully produce everything that we need when it comes to agriculture, and there may be supply gaps in our system. 'If adding the US's supply chain to the Malaysian network helps, then I don't think Malaysia will be hesitant to do the necessary to improve the conditions for our workers. But they must respect the rules and laws we have here in Malaysia,' he said.

Ensure reforms, policy coherence in revamped 13MP, urge trade groups
Finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan has taken on the duties of the economy minister following the resignation of Rafizi Ramli, and will lead the 13MP revamp. PETALING JAYA : Two business groups want Putrajaya to uphold policy continuity and preserve key structural reforms in the revised 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), following the recent resignation of economy minister Rafizi Ramli. The Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia (Samenta) urged the government to uphold clarity and transparency in the 13MP overhaul, stressing that both domestic and foreign investor confidence hinges on it. Samenta president William Ng said business confidence would improve if the revamped 13MP delivers a sharper focus, substantive structural reforms, and clear long-term direction. However, he cautioned that a rushed process and excessive politicisation of reforms could undermine investor confidence. 'We want to see policy coherence, commitment to talent development, and a shift toward a more competitive and innovation-led economy. What we don't want is another round of short-termism or populism,' he told FMT. Ng said his biggest concern was whether the input of industry players over the past one year would hold the same weight since finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan, tasked with leading the overhaul, was not fully involved in consultations. 'While Rafizi may have strong views that may not be fully appreciated by other ministers, these views are backed by extensive industry consultation. 'The timing of the revamp is certainly abrupt, but not necessarily unwelcome,' he said. 'Any changes at this stage will not erode investors' confidence as long as there is clarity and consistency in the final document.' Meanwhile, the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) expressed support for the review, citing recent global developments, including US tariffs and the Iran-Israel conflict. However, it expressed concern over the timing of the revamp, noting that the plan is scheduled to be tabled in Parliament at the end of July. MEF president Syed Hussain Syed Husman said the group was concerned about policy continuity and predictability as employers need stability for long-term planning especially as regards investment, expansion and hiring decisions. 'Abrupt shifts in policy direction may erode investor confidence and disrupt strategic business planning. 'Investors may be concerned that such last-minute changes could lead to the abandonment of previous strategic initiatives, especially those related to digital transformation, ESG, and talent development, unless clear continuity is demonstrated,' he said. Syed Hussain said it was unclear whether the overhaul process would be inclusive and consultative. 'MEF is concerned that without structured stakeholder engagement, the revamped 13MP may fall short in addressing ground level challenges,' he said. Syed Hussain also expressed concern that, with the finance minister II leading the overhaul, the 13MP revamp may be skewed towards fiscal and budgetary considerations while omitting to address structural issues faced by employers. He added that there were concerns that with a new economy minister expected to take office, key initiatives championed by the former minister might be sidelined without explanation. These include digital economy initiatives, innovation ecosystems, and green economy aspirations, which he said may lose traction without firm ministerial commitment. Syed Hussain expressed hope of a transparent, inclusive and balanced approach to finalising the revamped 13MP. 'It is essential that the revamped 13MP reflects the actual needs of the business community, supports productivity-led growth and addresses labour market challenges. 'Frequent shifts in national direction without broad stakeholder consultation may be perceived as policy volatility, undermining Malaysia's reputation as a stable investment destination.' On Friday, the government announced that Amir had taken on the duties of the economy minister and would lead the 13MP revamp. He said the revamp had become necessary following feedback from Cabinet colleagues. Rafizi, however, questioned the last-minute decision to revamp the plan, although he acknowledged that it contained 'bold and radical' policies that may not have sat well with certain ministries. The PKR leader said he had presented the plan to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on multiple occasions, as well as twice to the Cabinet, in order to achieve a consensus.
