Gujarat: CM stays overnight in remote, border village; interacts with villagers to encourage school enrollment
Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], June 28 (ANI): As part of the Shala Praveshotsav - Kanya Kelavani Mahotsav, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has adopted a sensitive approach by staying overnight in remote and border-area villages to promote school enrollment among children.
According to an official release, during his overnight stay, the Chief Minister held traditional 'khatla baithaks' with villagers, fostering community dialogue and embracing the spirit of rural life.
During previous years' Shala Praveshotsav, Chief Minister Patel had stayed overnight in a rural area near the Madhya Pradesh border in Narmada district and in a village near the Maharashtra border in Dang district. He held interactive meetings with villagers and gathered insights about the developmental needs of these regions.
On the third day of the 2025 Shala Praveshotsav, Saturday (June 28), Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel facilitated the enrollment of children in Kuran village, located near the India-Pakistan international border in Kutch district.
Before leading the Shala Praveshotsav in Kuran, CM Patel arrived in Kutch on Friday. He stayed overnight in the village and conducted an evening dialogue session with the residents.
The Chief Minister congratulated the villagers of Kuran, located near the international border, for their cooperation during Operation Sindoor by following the instructions of the administrative authorities and the armed forces.
CM Patel highlighted to the villagers that even the most remote regions of Kutch have experienced accelerated development, driven by the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He stated that the Renewable Energy Park has become a major hub for employment, and the Rann Utsav has brought economic prosperity to the rural communities of Kutch.
Chief Minister assured the villagers that the government stands firmly with them and is fully committed to addressing and fulfilling their local development needs.
On Saturday, the concluding day of the Shala Praveshotsav, the Chief Minister visited the school in Kuran village and facilitated the enrollment of 104 children, from Balvatika and Anganwadi up to standard 9.
As part of this year's Shala Praveshotsav, over 1.34 lakh children are set to be enrolled in schools across the entire Kutch district.
Chief Minister Patel also inaugurated the newly constructed primary school in Kuran, a village known as the sentinel of the border.
The Chief Minister interacted with the newly enrolled children and held a meeting with members of the School Management Committee (SMC), guiding school and village infrastructure, the quality of education, and various development-related issues.
Furthermore, he also urged parents to take an active interest in their children's education and to contribute towards building a Viksit Gujarat for a Viksit Bharat.
Turning the Shala Praveshotsav into a celebration of development, the Chief Minister gifted development projects worth Rs 107.60 crore to the Kutch district.
On the occasion, MLAs, office bearers, senior district officials, villagers, children, and their parents were present. (ANI)

Centre Plans To Utilise Indus Waters, Plans Public Outreach: Sources
New Delhi: In a strategic move, the central government will launch a public outreach program to explain to citizens the motive behind putting the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan in abeyance, sources said. The initiative aims to increase public awareness of how the suspension of the decades-old agreement benefits India. The outreach program will be spearheaded by union ministers who will explain the strategic moves on the Indus Water Treaty in simple terms to the people, especially those living in North Indian states. According to sources, the larger objective of the initiative is to develop a long-term water management strategy that will allow India to make better use of the Indus River waters within the states. The government is also planning to facilitate the movement of the Indus River waters from Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. The 13 existing canal systems of the four states have been connected, which will not only increase the availability of water in the areas, but India will also be able to use the surplus water for itself, sources added. The strategic developments include building a 160-kilometre canal to connect the Chenab River to the Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej River systems. The Centre is also planning to connect the Indus River waters to the Ganga Canal in Rajasthan - and set a target for it to be completed in three years. The Indus River system The Indus basin is fed mainly by the Ravi, the Jhelum, and the Indus itself, all three of which were allotted to Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty but flow through India before crossing over. The agreement gives India rights over the eastern rivers - the Sutlej, Beas, and Chenab. While India would get water from the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi, Pakistan would get the water from the Chenab, Jhelum, and Indus. India, being the upper riparian state, technically has rights to the waters of all six rivers, but the agreement allowed Pakistan to get the flow of waters of the 'western rivers'. The Indus Water Treaty - signed in 1960 - had survived through three wars fought by India and Pakistan in 1965, 1971, and 1999. But after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 people were killed, India took stern diplomatic measures, including putting the treaty into abeyance. By doing this, India has been able to control, to some extent, the western rivers and flow of water to Pakistan. PM Modi on suspending Indus Waters Treaty Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month said that "water and blood cannot flow together". "Terror and talk cannot take place together. Terror and trade cannot take place together. And, water and blood also cannot flow together," he said - referring to a clear message to Pakistan that while India may have agreed to a ceasefire, it has no plans to lift the hold on the Indus Waters Treaty. India on May 7 conducted 'Operation Sindoor', a targeted military strike on terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir (PoK), after finding cross-border to the Pahalgam attack. Pakistan then launched a massive missile and drone attack, but the threats were thwarted. In retaliation, Indian armed forces struck airfields in Pakistan. Both countries agreed to a ceasefire on May 10.

Despite rising revenue deficit, Maharashtra govt presents supplementary demands worth Rs 57,609 crore
Despite fears of rising fiscal and revenue deficits, the Maharashtra government tabled supplementary demands of Rs 57,509.71 crore in the Legislative Assembly Monday to allocate funds for various schemes and projects. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who also holds the Finance portfolio, presented these demands on the first day of the three-week Monsoon Session, with an eye on the upcoming civic body polls and infrastructure projects. Supplementary demands refer to the additional funds required for various schemes, programmes, and projects beyond what is allocated in a budget. During the Maharashtra Budget session in March 2025, Pawar tabled supplementary demands worth Rs 6,480.20 crore. The Opposition questioned the move, citing the deteriorating financial condition. 'The state already has a revenue deficit of Rs 45,890 crore. With the additional supplementary demands of Rs 57,609.71 crore, the total revenue deficit will rise above Rs 1 lakh crore. It speaks of financial mismanagement prevalent in the state,' said Nationalist Congress Party (SP) president and MLA Jayant Patil. Out of the total demands, Rs 15,465.13 crore have been allocated to the Urban Development Department, headed by Pawar's fellow Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, ahead of the elections in 29 civic bodies, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The financial arrangement is made to undertake various development works within the jurisdiction of urban local bodies. Further, Rs 11,042.76 crore has been earmarked for various grants as per the recommendations of the 15th Finance Commission. As road contractors across the state intensify their protests against the non-payment of dues worth Rs 80,000 crore, the state government has allocated Rs 9,068.49 crore for the Public Works Department (PWD) to clear the pending dues for carrying out road and bridge works. The government has earmarked Rs 3,228.38 crore for the refund of stamp duty cess collected for Metro projects and other development works by municipal corporations, municipalities, municipal councils, and zilla parishads. Other major allocations – Rs 2,240.82 crore for the state government's contribution towards tunnel construction for metro and other transport infrastructure projects. – Rs 2,182.82 crore as share capital for cooperative sugar factories, which will be used for margin money loans from the National Cooperative Development Corporation. – Rs 2,150 crore to benefit from the Central government's 50-year long-term loan programme. – Rs 2,096.58 crore to various corporations for the completion of incomplete and long-pending irrigation projects. – Rs 2,000 crore for district roads and bridges. – Rs 4,733.11 crore to the Rural Development Department. – Rs 3,798.93 crore to the Social Justice Department to implement ongoing schemes for backward classes and to pay scholarships to eligible students. – Rs 2,835.02 crore for the Cooperation, Marketing, and Textile Department. -Rs 1,300 crore to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) Department to pay scholarships to eligible students. -Rs 1,000 crore for carrying out various development works for the Kumbh Mela in Nashik in 2026.

Ending all speculations about differences with his Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah on Monday said that his government in the state will last for five years like a 'rock'. 'Our government will last for five years like a rock. We will come together,' CM Siddaramaiah said, while holding hands with Deputy CM Shivakumar. While addressing the issue of Congress general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Surjewala's visit, Siddaramaiah stressed that he has come to strengthen the party organisation, news agency ANI reported. "He is coming to the state to strengthen the organisation. He will do his job", Karnataka CM said. The CM also said that the government will remain intact when questioned about a statement from the Leader of Opposition R Ashoka, who had said that Siddaramaiah will not inaugurate the Dussehra festival this year. "DK Shivakumar and I are together, and this government will remain intact for five years like a rock. BJP is known for lies; that's what they do. We are intact and we don't care for any comments from them," he said. According to ANI, Congress MP Randeep Surjewala is visiting Karnataka on Monday to speak to the party legislators, amidst state minister KN Rajanna's statement hinting at a possible organisational reshuffle in the state. While addressing the issue, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara stated that he was unaware of the reason behind Surjewala's visit and mentioned that he may discuss the party organisation ahead of the upcoming Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat elections. Parameshwara stressed that the intervention in the state party affairs is the "job" of the Congress party high command, and it is normal that they speak to leaders if minor differences between leaders arise. "I don't know for what purpose Surjewala has been called. He might speak about party organisation. Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat elections are coming up, so he might discuss that. Sometimes the high command intervenes – that's their job. It's natural for the high command to speak when minor differences arise", Parameshwara told reporters. The Karnataka Home Minister said that he has sought time from Randeep Surjewala and stated that the purpose of his meeting is "personal". 'I have requested time to meet Surjewala, and he has said he will come. My meeting is a personal matter,' he said. Congress General Secretary in charge of Karnataka, Randeep Singh Surjewala will hold separate meetings with party legislators on Monday, amid signs of unrest within the ruling party. The meetings have gained significance as several MLAs have recently voiced dissatisfaction over the government's functioning, PTI reported. The development also comes at a time when speculation over a leadership change in Karnataka has resurfaced, following Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna's recent remarks hinting at 'revolutionary' political developments after September. There is also talk within party circles of a possible cabinet reshuffle and a change of state Congress president. According to the PTI report, Aland MLA BR Patil recently alleged bribery in the allotment of public housing under the Housing Department. Kagwad MLA Raju Kage hinted at resigning, citing delays in developmental works and fund releases, while claiming the administration had 'completely collapsed'. (With inputs from agencies)
